look at those napalm explosions! :D

This reminds me. In LockOn we have ZAB bombs, though there are no fire explosions. You even can hear sound of the fire and flames, but non are visible.

I am realy looking forward to Whirlwinds of Vietnam. I think the sim has a great setting and has the potential to be loads of fun. I was a bit concerned about the lack of infos in the past couple of months, but it seems they are still on track. Hope to see screens with the SpeedTree jungle soon.

I know I am way ahead of time here, but the setting also has great potential for future addons, like early Cobras, Jollys or Sandys. Or how about 'OV-10: AFACs of Vietnam' ? Lots of new and fresh stuff to discover here. You can keep your standart F-16s in the hangar...

Does WoV make use of SpeedTree?...ground foliage seems to be moved by rotors wind in those screens

Immersion seems to be a really strong point...look at that farps with tons of INFANTRY(!) getting into choppers and later beeing released in the front. I don´t know how much detailed infantry DOF or AI is going to be modelled...but looking at the screen with those six US soldiers firing to vietcongs makes me think of great and very pleasant surprises;)

Looking forward to seeing LOBS and WoV released!

BTW...anybody knows if Oleg Maddox´s team (and himself) is involved in the making of this title?

There has been an anouncement some months ago that the developer has licensed the SpeedTree engine. But judging by the screens I assume that it has not been implemented into the sim yet.

Oleg's team ( Maddox Games ) is not behind the project but G5 Software. The only thing those two developers have in common is the same puplisher ( 1C ).

Let's hope that there will be more infos released about that very promising sim soon.

Ok, thanks for the info.

Also I´ve found a link where developers talk about SpeedTree implementation:

The fact they opted to go for SpeedTree sounds promising. My biggest concern was that it might fail to properly render the vast jungle areas which would be a definitive immersion killer.

-static campagne wich concentrates on historical accurancy

-no multiplayer

-only flyable will be the UH-1B Gunship

-high degree of realism, clickable cockpit

-close interaction with ground troops

Well, that managed to creep up under my radar! Thanks for bringing up the subject, it looks very promising, with plenty of tactical gameplay potential. As ever though, screen shots always promise a lot. What is delivered is often a different matter.

However the cockpit shots remind me of an updated EECH, and I've been waiting for that for a long time. Ferrying troops around is something I've waited a lot longer for... ever since Hind, in fact!

I suppose it might be more of an Operation Flashpoint style game than a flight sim, but there's nothing wrong with that, and as long as the flight models are halfway decent it could be a lot of fun*.

  • 2 weeks later...

The official site has been updated with some new info and screens:

whirlwind_of_vietnam8.jpg

The terrain looks realy great. It's just it doesn't realy look like Vietnam to me yet, but I guess those are still WIP. Even if those are the final graphics it would be great.

Looking forward to E3 this week where 1C will show off WoV.

A question for Huey fans: Is the UH-1B especially the gunship version of the Huey or can both the gunship and the long hull ( two windows per door ) transporter be UH-1B's ?

Is this made with the "speedtree"? Maybe they need some "speedjungle" optimisations for the original engine. :)

The two-windowed door version you're talking about was UH-1D..
