Upgrade, would I see much improvement?

Like many guys here, I have been wondering if an upgrade would be worth the money. The money is not so much the issue. But I also would not want to waste money on only a slight improvement.

 

I built this rig in 2/2008, so a few years have gone by. I have it overclocked to 4.0ghz. And I see a lot of the new cpus running at 4.0ghz. So, is there much difference between my i7 965 and newer cpus/motherboards?

I added the new GTX video card and G.Skill memory over a year ago. And added the SSD's in RAID0 just a few weeks ago.

 

I could not find any Corsair Dominator Triple-Channel 1866, so I ended up getting the G.Skill Triple-Channel 1600. The were both rated at 9-9-9-24. I have the bios memory on Auto, so I think the G.Skill is running at 9-9-9-28. I have no idea if that is a problem. I read somewhere that they will both run at the lower 1600. So, I am not sure if it was wise to put them in..

 

Any comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

TBH, you won't see much if you upgrade.

 

You already got the real important SSD and the CPU is a 4GHz class player...their aint much more to gain unless you aim for 5GHz and are willing to invest in proper water cooling and a new GPU as well, along with DDR4 ??

 

I would maybe get a new GPU and keep the rest until DDR4 drops in price and Skylake comes out.

The current x99 compatible CPU*s are excellent overlockers due to a soldered heat spreader but it comes with a very very high price, CPU MB DDR4 plus water-cooling if you want to push the 3.5GHz baby towards 5.

 

Actually, why don't you measure your FPS and decide from there ?

With data at hand, decisions are far easier.

 

You should be able to play in 1080p with all maxed out no less than 50 fps.

If you have that, you don't need to upgrade that urgent, you may better invest in a Gsync screen

to get rid off that tearing and flickering if money aint an issue. I can HIGHLY recommend the Asus 27" ROG Swift model screen, excellent, a totally new world of gaming, can't describe but I tell you all guys that watched it here had their jaws drop, nit because of the 980GTX and stuff, no, that monitor is a real game changer as long as your GTX supports Gsync, and I think it does.

 

That would be your best investment to harmonise gameplay and graphics, especially if u use TIR.

I currently have 3 1920x1080 screens in nVidia Surround and 1 1920x1080 touchscreen. I have viewports exported to the touchscreen and Helios running, and am getting about 15fps. Even if I run without Helios or the viewports at only 5760x1080 I get about 20-25fps. I am thinking about maybe getting a large 4k monitor if they can get at least 60mhz someday.

 

Do you think that the different types of memory that I have could cause a problem?

Wow, I mean WOW 5760x1080 with your GPU ??!!

 

I dont think any current single GPU can run DCS at 4k when I look at my 980GTX and WQHD their aint much headroom for 4K unless you like 20-25 fps.

 

 

Really, forget 4k for now, NONE of those screens is fast and MOST do NOT EVEN HAVE ONE CHIP capable of talking to the LED's but TWO of them, causing terrible tearing and what not else.

 

If you like smoothness, settle with 1080p or 1440p and think about the Asus Swift Monitor, read the reviews. I can honestly tell you it's more than jaw dropping smoooooooth, at any framerate I have experienced, from 40 to 144, in DCS, BF4 or Grid2, just stunningly amazing.

 

If you still go 4k, Asus has one that they say is "suitable" for gamers too, sells for round about 500 iirc. The Swift is 200 more but for sure holds what it promises. For the 4k screen you need at least 2-way SLI 980GTX for fast framerates at 4k.

 

I can read the text on Abris now from 1 meter away, zoomed out so I can see countermeasure panel and stil read the text when I move my head with TIR, that is how good and detailed already 1440p is and how smooth this screen scrolls.

You can take any windows dl-popup and swivel over your screen, you can read the text in that box at any time, crystal clear, while you move that box around on your screen :=)

That Asus PB287Q does 4k@60Hz with 1ms response time.

 

Its the one with the chopper fork on it in grid-frame.

 

Still, you need SLI to fire that properly

No, I dont think so, just make sure they run at the slower speed.

 

If that wouldnt work you couldnt boot :)

 

 

Run a test like prime95 for a few hours or run memtest from a usb stick or Ubuntu CD. They both test RAM pretty thoroughly.

Since I am running 3 monitors it would be hard to just go down to one 27". Or even consider replacing all three with new 27" monitors since that's what I've already got. I was thinking that 'someday' it would be nice to have a large (~48") single monitor at 4k with 60mhz, but I don't plan to do that anytime soon. I just want smooth/higher fps with the monitors that I have now.

 

Here is my Volair Sim cockpit build that I made a year ago. I sit about 1 yard away from the monitor currently and would need a large monitor if I replace it.

 

But I had my GTX 660ti 3gb before I built this, and so I used it and it worked. But you said 'Wow' twice, so does that mean you are surprised I can run all these with it? I tried to compare my 660 with your 980, but they didn't have the 660ti in this comparision so I used just the straight 660, and there was quite a difference.

 

I had always heard that DCS was CPU heavy and so I started thinking I should upgrade my CPU. But now you have me thinking a new graphics card is something to consider? :huh:

Well Bitmaster, I also posted yesterday on ExtremeOverclockers.com and they said the same thing.. new gpu.

 

So, today I bought a EVGA 04G-P4-2983-KR GeForce GTX 980 4GB Video Card. I should get a very good increase with that when I compare it to my 660Ti on the Anandtech.com Bench Compare page. They didn't have the exact Ti 4gb, so I used the 750Ti and it was still a 50-60% increase on their benchmark test. Can't wait to get it...

 

I have been curious as to why you said "Wow, I mean WOW 5760x1080 with your GPU ??!!"? I've had no problems running that res and a 4th touchscreen with my 660Ti 3gb. So, what I am curious as to your surprise in that statement. Was I pushing that card past it's design? I have been getting the BSOD more lately. Usually when running a benchmark test or just windows hickuping. But only about 3-4 times in the past month.

Hi Snacko,

How is the new 980? What framerates do you get and what's the current bottleneck now, the cpu, the gpu, or the gpu ram size?

I am asking these questions because I have 3 2560x1600 monitors and a 660ti. My current resolution is 4010x800 and I was wondering if a single 980 would be enough to run DCS full resolution.

First let me say that the last DCS Update gave me about 10 more FPS back. I think that's why my system wasn't running as well as it was before. It went from 25 - 35. So that helped.

 

The card arrived the next day. I followed the Performance Guide post and the 980 was giving me 90-110 FPS out off the map. Then when I tested over some objects (a big city), which uses the cpu to draw, I got about 75 FPS. And in a quick mission with most everything on high (per the Performance Guide) I'm getting 55-65 FPS.

 

So the gpu was the bottleneck before.. My i7 can handle this well enough now. I compared my 660Ti to the 980 on http://www.anandtech.com benchmark page. They didn't have the ti so I used a 770. Is was still about 40% faster.

Thanks for the reply Snacko. So it seems I will be needing two 980 since 8000x1600 is roughly double the number the pixels than 5760x1080. I was hoping one will be enough :(

 

You could always just buy one and see.. The get the 2nd if necessary. DCS 2.0 is supposed to be better optimized for better framerates..

That 180fps was in an area of the map where there are no objects at all.

Ya objects are killer in this engine. It's a bummer for nvidia surround,4k, and oculus rift. Bring on 2.0 new engine and better optimizing.

 

My two 980 can't keep this sim locked at 60fps maxed out in the big cities and populated areas.

I7 4770k @ 4.6, sli 980 evga oc edition, ssdx2, Sony 55 inch edid hack nvidia 3dvision. Volair sim pit, DK2 Oculus Rift.
