Next aircraft speculation

I want to see how many people on here would actually be interested in a MiG-25 (thinking the MiG-31 would be a "little" bit hard to get data on atm..).

And if you would like one in-game, what model would it be?

I tought i would bring my topic here because i think leatherneck did an amazing job on making the MiG-21, and i really hope they keep bringing us some good old russian aircrafts to (try) to fly. :joystick:

i love having lot's of buttons to press :D

I agree, it might be hard to find a place for it currently. But i think if the MiG was to be added, the MiG-25 might be better suited for DCS out of the two anyways. since the MiG-25 is single seat while the MiG-31 is a dual seater where (i think) only the co-pilot has the radar screen. when i think about it though, it would be fun going out flying with one of your friends being the navigator :P less work for you to do..

I have actually directed a Mig-25 question to the LN guys in the past regarding information resource. Cobra847 responded:

"LN have done no research on this topic (yet, possibly)."

The version I personally would like to see is the PD variant, however the BM variant is usually fairly popular too.

You're missing the famous Mig-28 :megalol:

We will never see a Mig-31 module in our lifetime :(

what makes you say that?

they are making Su-27 and MiG-29 improvements, so I am sure that at some point they will get around to making it.

(Especially since you can buy a ride in a -31 and a guy in the USA bought a working -29)

EDIT: here is the proof:

I will take all the MiGs I can get. 23, 25, 27, 31. The more the better ;)

heh!

i like it!!

i'm with you on this one ----- every mig should be modeled!

every "modern" mig, that is

Mig-31 is rather advanced with too much classified data to accurately model. Simply buying a ride won't give you the information to model it.

The Su-27SK and Mig-29A, G, S are old variants and have outdated and enough unclassified data to be able to model.

I am sure they can get allot of data on it, just not enough for a DCS level standard.

Since I tend not to see the sim as a "Deathmatch!", I don't see anything too orphaned this side of the '40s. Sure it is much better when we have proper human controllable or at least AI rivals, but lack of them isn't game breaking for me. Therefore, I would find MiG-25 to be a must have, very interesting aircraft to play with.

Having some AI recon and bomber aircraft to intercept would make things interesting enough. Tackling with fighters should be secondary, and in very narrow scenarios may even work out to a certain degree in multiplayer (certainly not in multiplayer "team deathmatch" scenarios that tend to play casually and frequently though).

But truth be told, it is not the aircraft to shoot down fighters with. You can take a dash at them, hope for the best, and may even succeed. And if it doesn't work, you can still be quite likely to escape unscratched. But after that scenario plays out and you still try to push your luck by having another go at it, turn towards them etc, you suddenly may become a sitting duck, as did happen with many MiG-25s in ODS against F-15s.

It would be an aircraft that require strict discipline and precise skill to utilize with proper tactics, so this alone is a nice challenge.

As for F-14 vs MiG-25, see above paragraph, MiG can try to intercept, and perhaps run away unscratched if it doesn't work, and that's about it. It can't really "fight" the Tomcat, and Tomcat is just about the least fighter like, most interceptor like thing you can pit a MiG-25 against. They did meet in Iran-Iraq War, Iraninan F-14s did shoot down quite a few MiG-25s, but I am not aware of any confirmed F-14 shootdown by a Foxbat.

Besides interceptor version though, there are two additional MiG-25, recon / bomber version that had some sort of CCRP system that would let you bomb a preset target from quite far away with a supersonic drop, and also a SEAD capable version for dealing with air defences.

So either interceptor, recon/bomber or sead version, they would all be unique, interesting challenges to fly and fight. On the flipside though, it is a very, very specialised aircraft and it may or may not sell too well. I would personally get at least a variant or two.

Wishlist: F-4E Block 53 +, MiG-27K, Su-17M3 or M4, AH-1F or W circa 80s or early 90s, J35 Draken, Kfir C7, Mirage III/V

The map sizes are a serious issue for the Foxbat, It's a fast plane and that will make a already small(ish) map feel MUCH smaller.

Don't get me wrong, I love the MiG-25, it's one of my favorite aircraft of all time. Additionally, I would love to see it in DCS as I think one could do some really cool missions but it would only really be good if we have a map big enough to really support it. It's the same reason that a SR-71 would be kinda silly.

The MiG-21 already feels a bit cramped (in some ways) in the current map, I can only imagine what that would mean for the MiG-25.

People are doing fine with the Su-27 and F-15 which both outrange the MiG-25 by a huge margin. The Foxbat has a lot of speed but not that much endurance.

As for it not being fit to fight the current fighters, sure, it wouldn't be exactly fair but people are using ambush tactics in MiG-21s successfully. See: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=133804 . It's not for everyone, but being the underdog can be satisfying. The speed of the Foxbat will create opportunities. It worked in Iraq (well, better than the rest of the fighters they had), it'll work in DCS.

I'd buy it. Especially if it came with an AI spy plane or two to intercept.

The MiG-25 wasn't on my list of must have planes until recently. But when I started thinking about what I would make if I were to do a DCS module, the MiG-25PD quickly rose to the top of the list. Why? Because it is utterly unique. Just about every fighter made from the mid 1950's all the way up to the F-22 and 35 have about the same top speed, similar max altitude and everything else in regards to raw flight performance. The MiG-25 shatters that. It goes much faster and far higher.

Is such a plane well suited to fight FC3 F-15's and Su-27's? Maybe, maybe not. Some have managed a reasonable level of success with the MiG-21 in MP and that plane has absolutely no advantages over the FC3 fighters. The MiG-25 has two advantages and they are very significant. I'm not saying it will be easy to use effectively, I think instead it will be a real challenge. But it does have the raw performance to dictate the terms of any engagement. This is something no other existing or planned DCS module can do. It's like flying an Me-262 against P-51's (with a few missiles tossed in of course).

So yeah, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I'd also buy a MiG-23 or 27, but my top pick at this time is definitely the Foxbat. The MiG-31 would also be great but as others have stated, getting sufficiently detailed information on it maybe tricky. Additionally, a single seat fighter is potentially better for us in both online and offline play than a 2 seater. I am concerned with how the upcoming F-14 is going to play for that reason.

Next aircraft speculation

Now that we've stopped spazzing, giggling like little girls and going into seizures from the F-14 announcement, I have to wonder what the other two planes are going to be. Over the past week we've gained a few major clues. Here are few quotes that give some hints:

While our two other aircraft are considerably further along than the Tomcat -- they will not be announced for another month or two.

Currently we hope to complete development and enter BETA testing on the first version of the F-14 by the end of 2015. Subject to significant change.

All three of our aircraft have necessitated the need to develop new, internal technologies that we did not need for the MiG-21. Some of these have been more challenging than others-- and some will probably genuinely make your jaw drop.

By developing these difficult features, we are later able to adapt them to new aircraft, and thus shorten our development times even further.

Examples of complexity include e.g. Ground Radar, AI Systems, and more.

...

While plans may change, we currently hope to bundle two small theatres for free with both of the aircraft we're planning to release this year.

Both theatres are significantly different from each other and will require the construction of a lot of content that can be re-used down the line.

We know from this that one (or both) will have air to ground radar of some sort. That rules out the previous favorite idea of an F4U (or F6F) and A6M since neither F-14 we're getting has it. It also sounds a lot like the F-14 isn't actually next, but instead second or third on the list. But we still have all those WW2 pics related to the Pacific floating around, suggesting at least one plane will be related to that.

Cobra has also mentioned in interviews that they will release something for everyone. Thus implying a second Russian jet regardless of if a WW2 fighter materializes or not. I'm at a loss for what that 2nd jet could be. A fair number of western jets have A2G radar, but I don't know of any Russian fighters or fighter-bombers with it.

It would indeed, and there is a gaping chasm in the simulation waiting for the F-16 to fill. The A-6 would be a good addition, as would any number of Eastern block aircraft - which of course fill a vast number of air force inventories.

Whatever they choose though, I am sure they'll be good.

For russia... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zhuk_%28radar%29

+ Su-24M terrain following radar

+ probabbly Su-32/33/34 ?

but none of the hints by Leatherneck would indicate such plane. For russia ones there were some discussions regarding Su-17/22M4 and/or Mig-23 (MF? or MLD?) more than year ago. As far as i remember it was stated that those coldwar era ones share up to 60% of module with Mig-21, so developement would be potentiallty quick, but they were not planning those.

Latest Flankers do have a-g radar if I'm not mistaken. Besides that, Su-24 also had a complex two antenna radar system in it's nose. Don't know if Su-17 series had one, don't think so.

If second aircraft is a jet with a-g radar, it may perhaps be a Viggen too.

I would have liked the idea of two pacific warbirds from each side coming in rapid succession to be counterparts to each other and add to roster but, something with an air to ground radar would be very nice to have too. Especially if it's a Viggen or a Russian aircraft, both of which I'd be more excited for than F-14 :). Don't get me wrong, I am excited for F-14 too, just not as overjoyed over it as most people are :). So I really, really wonder what their two other aircraft are.

Ummm I guess some F-4 variants had some sort of a-g radar capacity did they not? I'd LOVE that, also A-6 had a radar too, which I'd also love, may be A-7 too? Hmm so many interesting possibilities :)

But that right there is the thing. Releasing 3 American planes isn't exactly something for everyone is it? For every person who says "I only fly US planes," I promise you there is someone else somewhere saying the same thing about only flying Russian planes.
