GTX 780 Max Usage Issue

Recommended Posts

I have two Asus Poseidon GTX780's in SLI. The other day I noticed that after flying around in DCS they did not come down in usage and stayed at about 90% usage with the temps staying up.

I rebooted. They were good for a few minutes (say 10) and then climbed back up to 90% usage and stayed there.

Rebooted again, didn't watch a video, load a game, nothing, same thing.

Virus scanned came up with nothing and I gotta say, I've never seen anything like this.

Latest drivers are installed.

MB is an Asus Maximus Hero VII

16GB Ram

Corsair 1000HX PSU

Whatcha think is causing this?

If you are familiar with Linux or making bootable USB sticks / DVD, then get a copy of any suitable Linux, Ubuntu preferred as it allows Nvidia driver to be installed with 1 click.

try in Linux and see if it is a OS symptom or HW symptom

You can boot into Ubuntu WITHOUT the need to install it. It wont allow you to install a driver ( it actually does but makes no sense as u have to reboot ).

If you have a spare drive, put that in, disconnect your Win-drive to not mess with it, INSTALL ubuntu, install NV driver and check again.

Method 2:

Depending on what kind of Win lic. you have you might be able to install a 2nd copy on a 2nd drive ( like ubuntu ) and see if it persists.

Boot into SAFE MODE in Windows as a first thing and see if that stops it.

If yes, you have a screwed OS or DRIVER, if it is still there, do the Ubuntu thing or 2nd Win install to check with full blown OS's.

Ubuntu works like a charme with NV, I used to play Wargames European Escalation across all OS and I really like the way Ubuntu boosts performance ( openGL ). It is a good OS to test HW.

Bitcoin malware can do this. There was a report the latest Utorrent software had this enabled.

I've also seen a process in task manager behind this after installing a game from a friend of a friends as per se.

Check task manager when this is occurring. Download malware bytes and run a scan.

Viruses are not so much a threat anymore, it's the malware and Trojans to watch out for.

Disabled SLI and it immediately dropped to 0 Usage. Switched between cards and it stayed there.

Just so anyone interested in my resolution reads this, it was Steam causing the high usage. Not sure why but the problem was gone immediately after ending the Steam process tree.

Hmmm, thats a good read.

I deleted steam from my system and have had no problems. (well ok, last night when I was flying with my squadron). I'll double check everything from the forum and make sure its gone.

Thanks again Dredd
