How far does your 980 overclock ?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering what other 980's can push when overclocked.

Currently mine is stuck at 1450/8000 MHz core/mem at stock volts.

Temp is 44°C max.

What is yours ?

Asus GPU-Tweak LOG attached. Scroll down a few lines until the core jumps to 1450, that's when DCS kicked in.

On this run the GPU did not go above 40-41°C, it depends on ambient air and water temperature.

Following the Asus Guide on YT on HowTo oc a 970/980 they recommend not to raise Volts unless it tilts, well, I dialled my volts back to normal and it still runs flawless.

My PowerTarget is max and dialled in core clock is 1400. It still auto-overlocks another 50MHz as the PT is not saturated.

I think with a different tool this card goes way beyond 1500, reviews tested them with 1600/8000 rock solid. Just that I don't know which tool that was.

Just curious - are you overclocking just to see how far you can go or is there actually a game out there which would profit from an overclocked 980?

He has a 144Hz monitor so I guess ocing his card can lead to benefits in quite many games actually... :music_whistling:

golani, you are probably right. But i remember the time i overclocked my E6850, i5 2500K, GTX 460, the old FSB, and the

8800GT (with this Arctic Accelero S1) to run FSX decently. I burned a set of Crucial Ballistix 1066.

It was a trill. I had a lot of fun. You learn a lot of things. Depending of your display resolution, this can help.

Just for the fun, or better.

The graphic of today's games are good but still far from the reality.

Well, it really makes a "little" difference and through the Asus Swift monitor I actually get to see each frame gained by overlocking.

from 1200 to 1450 and from 7000 to 8000 aint nothing and it comes for free :))

VRAM already saturated with 1440p ???

3804MB @ 1440p really doesnt look like 4k is doable, does it ???

Good thing is, the PT cries for mooooooore OC :)

Could it be that DCS with DX9 just wont stress the GPU in such a way that it won't need to activate all it's features and such stays lower in consumption and PowerTarget ?

I think I should check that with one of my sons games on this rig, there are plenty DX11 and openGL games.....

So as a complete novice, I have a R9-280 Sapphire, just wanted a cheap interim so didnt go for the full 290X

Using GPU-Z its showing my GPU usage is 60% and CPU Meter Showing my CPU at 50% and Memory is only 30% usage. and yet i am only getting 30FPS.

Then I use the AMD overdrive to increse the GPU clock and Memory Clock to 12 and 1250 respectively but this makes no different to the FPS.

Also, GPU-Z doesnt show the increase.

If Im not using 100% of GPU and CPU yet only getting 34 FPS - could there be a bottle elsewhere.

Hmm, first thing would be to look for more MHz from the CPU.

You also run a 2600k. Lemme tell you, those chips runs at 3.8-4.0 with the stock intel cooler, and if you are LUCKY, you have a D2 stepping with an A in the series, which means A-batch from the latest and greatest 2600k's ever made, they usually go 4.8-5.0GHz with very moderate Voltage increase ( D2 stepping check in CPUZ ).

2nd thing would be to run the game in 800x600 and see how many fps the cpu can deliver.

Then, increase settings in small steps, resolution and effects and see when it can't keep up.

I can easily force mine to 30-60 fps now with all mods enabled, especially MoreVisibility mod set to EXTREME is a fps killer. Cut mine from 60-90 to 30-60, but it looks soon damn nice I leave it this way !

You never have enough GPU Power ever !

Try overclocking the cpu to maybe 4ghz and see if it makes any difference. Overclocking GPU doesn't help much in DCS. What kind of cooler you've got on cpu?

I really don't see the point of running prime95 for hours, as DCS stress cpu less than that. I did half an hour at most, enough to see if there are issues.

I know. But i prefer to mention the standards.

Stress the cpu over time can generate an accumulation of temperature in the case. It's to test the case.

When you are on the edge, your cpu can run good at 70° and generate errors at 73°.

And i know nobody will follow this particular tip. :megalol:

Actually what I find best is running OCCT in error checking mode for 6 hours. Because it's possible your cpu makes errors here and there and not make your computer crash. You want to be sure your cpu is rock solid before you use your oc settings everyday. The cpu processes data that is sometimes saved on your hdd, so if it makes errors some of your data may become corrupt.

Well, if I would follow that procedure I would be running at 5GHz, as it only fails in prime95 after so many minutes, usually between 15 and 45 minutes.

I let it run over night and if it still runs solid when I come back in I consider it safe to use but that is only me.

I found the tool to oc further, it's an older version of the Asus Tool that I can't obtain anymore.

Maybe Asus limited the MHz to 1400 for a good reason, on air alone those 1500-1600 MHz could be killer MHz.

Looking for another tool to dial that in... will report.

hehe...

with MSI Afterburner I am rock solid at 1570 MHz now without increasing voltage, RAM stayed at 8000 MHz for now, temp in DCS is 44°C.

That clock and setting MoreVisibility back one step to Ultimate keeps my frames anytime above 50, usually high 60 to 90 internal, external view is 100+ fps. Lowest fps for s splitt second was 41fps, highest 138.

The reason for the 50 fps is my dynamic range of the Asus screen, 50-144Hz. Any fps below 50 voids Gsync, so witzh this screen you better stay well above 50.

With MoreVisibility set to Extreme it sometimes went down to 28 and had some tendency to jingle around in high 40 in some scenarios and I noticed a tearing..hmmm didnt know why until I read the test report about that new Acer FreeSync screen and that review covers the dependency of FreeSync AND Gsync from your Dynamic Range.

That is vital to know !

it turned out that the driver resets at 1570, turning your screen black for a few seconds until it recovers at stock MHz, which is about 1340 MHz.

Wouldnt be too bad if there werent the total blackout waahaaa !

I dialed it back to 1500 MHz and now the driver does not rest itself 1-2h into the session, it runs rock solid for hours, more hours than I can ever fly, good enough I'd say ;)

1500 MHz ain't bad, stock OC out of the box is 1350 MHz IF you install the Asus OC-Tool and switch profile to GAMING. In standard-standard mode it is another 100MHz or so slower which you really can see in FPS.

over 250MHz over stock speed, RAM another 1GHz faster in OC and all that without the need to raise volatge, GPU temp at modest 40°C in DCS and 44°C in 3d stress test is awesome for that speed !

Thanks Asus, board, GPU and screen make my gaming experience superb, finally.

I used to play at 20-30 fps, low/medium settings, tearing, stutttstuttstutter

and sometimes a real bad responding FM due to low fps. That was a MacBook Pro Retina Mid2012 2.6GHzi7/16GB/256GB SSD/NV-M650GT/Win7-64-bootcamp

i think I have found the sweet spot with those settings, it could go higher but not as stable as I want it to be and I dont like stress at all, not when I wanna play MP, not that BSOD. no..please NO !

All in all, the rig gained at least 25-30% fps, compared to stock speeds.

The real booster for sure is the CPU at 4.8 GHz, stock is 3.8GHz. That is 1GHz on top of it for free :))

All that I now need is a clever fan control that will alow me to finetune fan speeds to eliminate the last sources of sound pollution and I am happy all over.

Yep,

we use similar AC's from Rittal for our racks. Cool and dust free but a hefty price tag and lots and lots of kWh/anno that I wouldnt wanna pay LoL.

What I meant is that all that is left that I can hear from my PC are the 4 x 180mm fans on the external radiator, those I dont have a potentiometer for yet. As they are PWM too I havent really made up my mind if i feed them via ther motherboard and use Asus FanControl to control RPM via PWM -or - if I buy a LianLi Slot adapter for 2,95 € that I mount on the radiator and not on a slot in the case. I think the LianLi thingy for 2,95 will be it, cheap and external and I even might be able to take the rotary knob off the slot and mount it directly on the radiator and hide the cables "somewhere" inside & behind "something".
