One thing we can glean is that the F-14A will probably be ~1983 or 84 onward. It has the HUD camera that was installed around 83/84 as seen in this render:

Here is a photo of VF-111 from their 81/82 cruise, you can see that the camera is absent/yet to be installed in this view

This make great sense. The best F-14A era would probably be ~1984-1992 since the airplane was well-sorted at that point and it covers a big part of it's operational timeframe without real changes. The F-14A was also minimally different from the F-14A+/B during that time period. Seems like a smart move!

Plus this covers the "TopGun" time frame. Whatever you think about the movie (nonflying parts are much better on mute...) it contains an amazing collection of F-14 (fighter aircraft in general) footage - the best ever made actually. This is the F-14 I grew up seeing and would love to see in DCS form.

Exciting stuff!

Bud you need to check out Speed and angels, just got the bluray and it's 100 times better than top gun...

I've seen it. The ACM training scenes are excellent and MUCH better/accurate than TopGun. That said, the total amount of footage is less. I do like the head-cam views of take-off and BFM. Great stuff.

The Navy gave TopGun unprecedented access to VF-51 and VF-111 for filming - going so far as the remove the fishbowl display to install cameras and filming equipment. That level of cooperation will probably never be seen again, hence the footage is pretty special IMHO.

Best,

Nick

It's better for what it is, although it has its lapses, too (see: F/A-18 cockpit swaps for moments he's flying a Tomcat...).

Yes, thats an issue too! I guess VF-32 transitioned before they could take his BFM footage. Plus there several situations where they use mirror-image shots instead of new footage (it hurts my eyes seeing the gunport on the right side of the aircraft).

But Speed and Angels is the best movie made about ACM and pilot training. I love it.
