So I have my work cut out for me...

Back to the Sabre after a break doing some other skin work, big changes it seems, new pilot, new 200 gal ferry tanks (thanks :)), among other things.

Experimenting with the pilot textures...

Pity no visor ;)

Playing with colours, call it a 1950s L1-A blue flying suit.

421 Squadron painted their helmets red, a little too candy apple right now on the virtual pilot ;)

Canadians in Europe wore a mix of flying gear, a lot of pilots preferred the combination G4E Ànti-G Pneumatic Coverall, basically a one-piece sage green nylon flying suit with integral bladders. You can see them in the pic below, and the inflation hose on the left side of the body of second pilot from right.

200 Gallon tanks are a nice addition for those long flights. Here`s a pic of my old man`s ride, snapped in Grosseto, Italy, during the return to France from a deployment to Greece in October, 1962:

Vespa will be interested in the artwork on the ground power units, most likely borrowed from the 4th Stormo... just to the right of the intake you can see the stallion painted on the GPU.

As in:

Speaking of ferry tanks... No. 1 OFU (Overseas Ferry Unit) flew many new Sabres across the North Atlantic during the fifties, replacing older aircraft with upgraded ones. I should do an OFU pilot too.

So back to work I go... anybody know where the T-shirt texture is on the F-86 pilot diffuse layer... :)

BTW, the knee board texture on the virtual pilot above is much more interesting in real life:

Another training skin, Canadair Sabre Mk.5 23314 of the Sabre Transition Unit, RCAF Station Chatham, New Brunswick, Canada, circa 1965. The STU used the Sabre as a lead-in aircraft for training pilots assigned to the CF-104 Starfighter. Tactical fighter skills were learned before the pilot was posted to 6 OTU at Cold Lake, Alberta, to learn to fly the 104.

Today '314 flies on as Hawk One, part of the Vintage Wings collection in Gatineau, Quebec.
