Should I upgrade ram from 16GB for DCS 2?

Recommended Posts

Hey gang,

My current system is running 1.5 very, very well. I could not be more pleased with it, have all the graphics options the highest levels and my performance is very good, over 100 fps and very smooth.

Looking forward to 2.0 and the NTTR Map, one thing I am a little concerned with is my ram. I currently have 16GB of Corsair Dominator Platinum PC-2133 ram.

Thinking perhaps I should consider upgrading to 32gb, or is 16gb still going to be plenty enough?

Any thoughts appreciated!

Everyone's answer is correct. You do not need to speculate, however, since PC systems are so idiosyncratic.

Grab a couple of the very useful and free system monitoring utilities readily available. Two that I have encountered as being particularly helpful and of low-impact are Hwinfo and NZXT's CAM.

Both are hardware-independent, meaning you do not have to have any particular hardware installed in your machine to make them work.

CAM gives you a nice recording instantaneously (you can also use it to monitor your PC from your smartphone), by way of a screen overlay.

Hwinfo produces a record for the whole session over time.

They also let you assess CPU/GPU % usage performance and temperature, both of which critically affect game play.

In simulation settings, high graphics enabled, 1920x1200, I rarely see more than 2.5GB system memory in use.

During the same exercise, I saw 2.2 GB video card memory in use.

With today's connected community, there are lots of resources available (these are just the two that I have found to be low-impact and flexible) to let you look at how things really are performing.

Have fun in the (un)friendly skies of DCS!

With the current 1.5 and black sea map, you could potentially see a performance improvement going from 4gb to 8gb, but going from 8gb to 16gb should do exactly nothing. Personally I have been seeing usage around 4,3gb with the 1.5 open beta on my PC which has 16gb of RAM.

running 8gb dual chan, but upgrading to 16gb quad chan

Will it help? probably not.

here is the spec from the beta page

Recommended system requirements: OS 64-bit Windows 7/8/10; DirectX11; CPU: Core i5+; RAM: 16GB; Hard disk space: 30 GB; Video: NVIDIA GeForce GTX780 / ATI R9 290 DirectX11 or better; Joystick; requires internet activation.

just to throw a wrench in here,, I have a post over in the Windows 10 section, and I received some good advice over there regarding the fact that my frame rates dropped when I upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10, the good advise was that Win 10 should be run with 16GIG of memory, not the 8 that I have. I ordered more but have not received yet. I could see where this could be relative to this thread,,, food for thought,,,

I do see a tad bit of ambiguity in the thread I am about to share, but they seem like valid points to me,, see postings 167 & 168

Windows 10 is experiencing driver incompatibility issues. A faulty or outdated driver can lead to a Memory leak.

WOW,,, that's very informative! I had no idea. That's what disturbs me about stuff like this,,, I would not have known this unless I read this post,, you would think you would get an automated notice or something from Microsoft, maybe even a prompt while updating,, just to be informative.

While software vendors may have information on their site, explaining a particular known issue, they don't go out of their way to disseminate that information to all of their customers. Microsoft is no different that most other vendor, in that regard.

My flight box is in need of an upgrade, but it is the oldest machine in my house, and the others have 16GB.

It's RAM. If 2 rolls around and you need more, grab more.

It sounds like everything is humming along nicely now, so there's little point to speculating.
