Low GPU Usage

750-800w would have been better with that single card configuration. 850-1000w for dual cards.

DCS is limited to 120 FPS out of the box (maxfps = 120; in graphics.lua - do not edit it here, create autoexec.cfg instead).

For you out there with monster GPU setups, this is easily achievable at maxed out settings and in turn result in GPU being under 100% load most of the time.

Go to your C:\Users\USERNAME\Saved Games\DCS.openbeta\Config folder, create plain text file named autoexec.cfg in notepad or something, containing following line:

options.graphics.maxfps = 500;

Try it now and enjoy 80-100% GPU load! Free heating included! :D

When you are finished enjoying 100% load, and done with wasting power heating up the room (every FPS above monitor refresh rate is wasted energy), bring back maxfps to something sensible - refreshing rate of your monitor, for example.

Problem is that i'm not reaching a stable 60 fps with 55 % load. So there is a lot of room not used that would at least guarantee a fixed 60 fps.

gonna try 144fps and see if it fits ;)

I did some quick tests with the new patch and autoexec.cfg set to 143fps max to monitor GPU usage:

40-65% anywhere any airframe BUT NO CLOSE TREES, as soon as trees are too close the GPU jumps to 90-95%.

Max fps are higher now, 143.x fps max but watching an F15 on F2-view near trees with 90+GPU still gave me 107fps. NOT BAD AT ALL.

Weakest link in chain is what it is imho. Whatever that is in someones rig, as soon as the cpu is flooded your GPU wont gain more %, if your CPU can shuffle more to the GPU or must shuffle more the GPU gains %.

The trees seem to be just more demandingm and thus tax the GPU a lot. Since frames do not drop that much it cant be the cpu being flooded, that would I guess go down to 15-30 choking fps, Gsync or not, that would stutttttter.

just my findings and first conclusions why the GPU is going up and down 40-95% with almost same fps ( in the scene I tested it in, there may well be other scenes were this is not true ).

all tests done overclocked and I took screenshots but sadly DCS's PrintScreen function does not capture the MSI Afterburner's overlay that showed the actual numbers.

Is there a function to capture the screenshot with a hotkey from MSI Afterburner or RivaTuner ? That would then sure hold that overlay info.

For me VRAM rockets up to the full 2GB even while sitting idle on the taxiway in my own empty private server, but core MHz stays very low, often just hanging at 150/300MHz.

This has only started happening after hotfix 3.

Before hotfix 3 my GPU was properly used and DCS would use around 1.5/1.8gb on multiplayer servers with around 10 people.

The new patch owns frame rates. Facing trees I get 80fps and then swing around facing some area without trees in the huey and it's 35fps if I'm lucky. GPU utilization is 80-90% when facing trees and cpu is maybe 30%. Without trees it's 40% gpu utilization and 15% cpu and a big dive in fps. Before the patch I was a solid 60-90fps at all times. You guys broke something big here from a performance standpoint.

Your case shows what i was trying to say, for some reason the GPU is not used and the FPS suffers, a lot of frames are missed. You get a better FPS when the circumstances forces your GPU to work more.

I took the Ka last night for some 104th etc. flights.

What a nightmare with this new patch, simply unplayable. FPS down to 13-27fps, never above 55fps no matter what and where and how high etc... looking into the plain sky w/o cockpit is 55fps.

Something went terribly south with patch#3

FPS with the Mig15 were somewhat better.

Crashed every single session, spme crashed with a BUZZ sound that forced me to reset the PC...

def. needs tweaking

  • 1 month later...

help :(

with every graphics setting maxed out im getting 45% GPU usage(max, usually about 30%) and 20 35fps

my CPU usage is low(15%) and the whole thing is a stutter fest

change to windowed mode and gpu usage and fps both go up, but i have zero controller from my x55

i7 3770k @4.4

gtx970

any ideas folks, its driving me mad, im ready to go all barreh on its ass and uninstall..... again hahahaha

yes mate iv done all that, its the 1st thing i change in ncp for all game profiles, CPU power options are set to high performance, all cores unparked and overclocked

i found an issue where the game is limiting the FPS to 60, im running at 75, what was happening, the vsync was kicking in, but because 75fps could not be reached due to game FPS limit, the fps would default to 37.5 fps with low gpu usage, i managed to get around this but the bottom line is, the fps are low, and both GPU and CPU usage are low, causing it to run like a sack of spanners so to speak

i dont mind low fps if something is throttling/bottle necking my system, but everything is fine, im chasing the FPS dragon again in DCS hahahahaa

cheers

Make sure you have the power options settings set to high performance in control panel. Your cpu setting must not be on power saving. I runned it like that for years without knowing.

This. I have a similar config (i5 4690k/GTX 970) and it run great, except the memory leak but it's another problem. Also make sure everything's in the Nvidia control panel is set to "application controlled", especially the AA setting, or it will kill your FPS.
