CPU vs. GPU usage in DCS 1.5/2.0

Recommended Posts

What say you DCS experts?

What has the greater impact as we approach 2016 and DCS 2.0, CPU cores/clock speed or GPU RAM?

Does assigning a CPU core to NVidia PhysX enhance frame rate performance?

How much impact does a large RAM GPU (more than 6GB) have on DCS 1.5/2.0 scenery visual appeal and performance.

As we all head into the holiday season, what should Santa bring? A new faster i5/i7 CPU, more RAM or a next generation GPU with 6-12GB of onboard RAM?

Recommendations welcome and YOUR opinion matters!

I am certainly no expert, but my opinion:

A nicely matched/balanced cpu and gpu setup. Certainly with the change to DX11, it works the graphics card more than previously, making good use of it.

You already have a GTX 970 4gb vid card. That should do nicely. So far 1.5 uses around 2.3gb of my 4gb of video ram. I do not believe having more video ram than 4gb would do anything for it.

Your Sandy Bridge cpu I think is probably a little underpowered to get the most out of it, are you overclocking it at all? You are good on ram.

I am running an Ivy Bridge 4820K with a GTX 970, have my cpu running at 4.50 ghz, and performance so far in DCS 1.5 is very, very good for me.

Also , for me performance in 1.5 was much better than in 1.2 - by far.

dburne,

I have not overclocked the i5-2500K. I've considered trying to get an 1155 socket i7-2600K as an inexpensive upgrade. I tasked the CPU with PhysX instead of letting the GTX 970 handle it. It seems better on the CPU, but I have no data to support that yet. I'm driving a 29" IPS at 2560 x 1080 and have considered moving to a 34" Curved 3440 x 1440 monitor.

If you can get a cpu that you can get up to say around 4.2 ghz or better, it would really feed that GTX 970 nicely. PhysX is not really going to do anything for you.

How does your system run DCS 1.2? Keep in mind you will get better performance with 1.5...

I'm running DCS 1.5 with FPS ranging from 40-125 FPS depending on situation (in cockpit vs. external view, etc)

1.5 is a huge performance boost from 1.2.X ... so I'm not complaining. :)

Just looking to continue optimizing 1.5 and prepping for 2.0/NTTR in November!

If you are looking to increase your screen real estate to a big 34" then possibly another 970 in SLI and definitely overclock that 2500k to plus 4ghz. I would wait and see how your system fares with DCS 2.0 and the more detailed maps such as Nevada.

Overclocked to 4.0Ghz and seeing how she holds up ... pretty zippy at 4.0! :)

Not exactly sure what metrics I should now use to test increase in performance.

Ideas anyone?

Hi guys,

I'm new to DCS. I started to fly on DCS 2 weeks ago on 1.5 and i must say that i was suprised how low my CPU and GPU usage were on maxed setting at 1080p and Vsync ON and flying the A-10c

My CPU and GPU were < 15%. i7 4790k @ 4.1 Ghz / GTX 970 phantom / SSD.

How are you measuring your usage?

Sounds really low, I have a GTX 970 , with i7 4820k @ 4.50 ghz. Also running 1080p.

With all settings maxed out except DOF off, my GPU usage runs usually between 80-90%.

How are your framerates?

In the Nvidia control panel, set your DCS to " prefer maximum performance" in the power setting.

Frame rate are at a steady 60, Vsync on, and all maxed out

Edit :

measuring usage with MSIAfternurner with overlay on the application. I've only play once with the A10-c, just to test the performance: i'm wiaiting for the mirage 2kc module. I'll do another test this WE. ah yes also this test was done when doing the first mission of the A10-c. However I had similar performance when doinf the first lesson for the A10-c. i was surprised because it was the first time seing an application that was very well optimized

i5 vs i7 shouldn't be much different since no games currently take advantage of hyperthreading that i7 CPUs have.

If you want smooth 4K you need multiple high end GPUs (980Ti, Fury X etc), CPUs haven't advanced nowhere near as much as GPU. e.g. 2011 i7-2600K is not that much slower then i7-6700K (only like 10-15% slower and you can pretty much close that distance by overclocking), whilst a GTX 580 just cannot compete vs GTX 980

If you want smooth 4K you need substantial VRAM (which I would say 3.5GB of GTX 970 is just not enough)

about this subject I have a question if one can answer.

I am in a kind of a dilemma. What should I choose if I had one choice to have better performance in DCS world?

Get new graphics card (gtx980 ) 700 euro or get a new mobo, cpu and memory (around 700euro) and keep my current GPU nvidia geforce 580.

System specs below

Case - Antec Three Hundred

PSU - Corsair AX750watt

Board - MSI Z170A GAMING PRO

CPU - Intel i5 6600K 3900MHz

Cooler - CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Plus

Memory - Kingston HYPERX 16G DDR4 2400Mhz CL15

Since you have a Sandy Bridge CPU (hopefully overclocked), it would be a complete waste of money to upgrade it for games ATM. Get the 980Ti.

i386DX40@42 MHz w/i387 CP, 4 MB RAM (8*512 kB), Trident 8900C 1 MB w/16-bit RAMDAC ISA, Quantum 340 MB UDMA33, SB 16, DOS 6.22 w/QEMM + Win3.11CE, Quickshot 1btn 2axis, Numpad as hat. 2 FPH on a good day, 1 FPH avg.

A little overclocking of the cpu and a better video card ( especially with 1.5 and the upcoming 2) would do wonders for you. A 980 would be nice, a 970 does pretty good as well.

Totally video card. Go for the Fury or 980 Ti. I got a 980 and decent CPU. DCS runs nice and smooth, but with DOF enabled, external views are a bit choppy. With 980Ti or Fury X, you should be able to smoke DCS.

I am in a kind of a dilemma too. I'm going to buy a new box. I have two options:

1, buy a third monitor and play the game on 3 monitors, all HD, in this case I'll have a gtx960 with 4GB RAM on it

2, staying on 1 screen and I'll have a gtx970

I have TrackIR, so 1 screen is not too bad. :)

In a year there will be another investment, called Oculus Rift. They say gtx970 is the minimum, gtx960 is not in game. Either way I will buy a new card around November 2016.

What is your experience, gtx960 can deal with the 3 screen, all of them HD with good quality? Not to mention a faster view movement due to trackir.

I don't know about DCS support for ultrawide monitors...but I have seen my friend play GTA and other games on them...and man...they are unreal. Personally I would imagine more efficient than multimonitors. So keep that in mind. :)
