Best Processor for DCS

Recommended Posts

Hi All

I'm thinking about upgrading my motherboard and Processor mainly for DCS and was wondering what peoples experiences have been with different models.

I currently have a I7 3770K OC to 4.6ghz and was wondering if I should upgrade to a I7 4790K (seen a test that shows best single thread performance) or the new Skylake I7 6700K and if there would be any benefit in DCS ?

I have 16gb of RAM and a 980 TI graphics card. With options on High except CIV traffic Medium, I am seeing anywhere from 120 fps to 27 fps (average around 50 fps) in cockpit.

Running 1.5 beta

Thanks

I never see the CPU or Graphics card usage go over 50% no matter what detail settings I enable

Then you already have your answer.

Current specs: Windows 10 Home 64bit, i5-9600K @ 3.7 Ghz, 32GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB Samsung EVO 860 M.2 SSD, GAINWARD RTX2060 6GB, Oculus Rift S, MS FFB2 Sidewinder + Warthog Throttle Quadrant, Saitek Pro rudder pedals.

I guess that an upgrade would just mean an improvement in your minimum fps. I can say that with the specs I have, my fps stay between 120 and 50 (minimum I saw was 48 ). Yet I capped the fps @120, and I feel it is probably OP as my monitor won't do more than 60.

Agree with others you should be golden with that system you have. I am currently running a 4820k processor at 4.5 ghz with a 970 card and 16gb of ram, and am very pleased with performance in 1.5 so far.

I don't think there is anything currently available that would give you much of an increase in performance , unless as Rage mentioned you go sli down the road as they improve for it.

SLI works wonderfully now in 1.5 Open Beta. You just need to add the exe to the dcs:bs profile and tweak a few settings using nvidia inspector.

I get ~40 fps with one card and ~80 with 2 at 4k resolution.

Great! It seems some folks are still having issues with SLI and xfire though. Im sure it will get ironed out.

OP I recently made exactly the same CPU upgrade you are asking about

I went from an i7-3770K oc at 4.7GHz to an i7-4790K which is oc at 4.8GHz

the Passmark score I measured for for both is 2460 and 2744 in the Single Threaded category

So on paper the 4790 performs about 11% better. I don't really have any test on how that relates to DCS though. With the old CPU I could get into situations where it was obvious the CPU was capping performance down to about 30 fps, so logically that would then up to 33. Not really a huge difference. And this was with DCSW 1.2 I haven't tried 1.5 yet.

The big difference I notice is how much more quiet my CPU cooler is with the 4790. 4.7GHz is some pretty extreme high overclocking for the 3770 and my CPU fan whirred like a prop engine.

Another big issue I had, which is why I replaced the 3770 was that it was unstable at that speed and led to a lot of machine crashes. If your is stable at 4.6 GHz that's good.

Whether it's worth the $ for a 10% improvement is your call.

dburne and whitehot would you mind sharing your DCS settings please ?

Don't tell me that SLi is now working :( I just got rid of two 970 gti's for the 980ti as I was having more problems than benefit with SLi in most games :)

To clarify, I am not currently running SLI although I have thought about adding another 970 down the road and giving it a try.

But currently I run DCS 1.5 with everything maxed out, ( except DOF off and cockpit displays 512) - 1920x1080, 144 hz and get very good performance. FPS above 100 in most cases. No stuttering at all, very smooth gameplay.

In Nvidia control panel I have it set to application controlled, and set all my settings in the game GUI. AA and AF are maxed out as well in game.

My system is running at 4.50 ghz, and I have my GTX 970 card running at 1460 core and 4000 memory.

All settings maxed out, xcept depth of field turned off (major fps impact in external views, although is something owed to DCS being unoptimized and not to GPU performance).

@Frosty - yup, I read around that the display could be "overclocked", but I don't feel very confident doing it as afaik, many folks bricked their screens after trying that.. I think I'll just keep it as it is, and then get Oculus Rift when it finally gets real. Also, being it a 16:10, 1920x1200 display, it has a higher resolution that most screens around today (up to 2560x1440), which is something I value much.

This is a good website to compare CPUs on

For most sims and DCS I understand you want to look at the Single-Core Performance score

I would also mention I have hyper-threading disabled in my motherboard's bios. Most games do not really take advantage of hyper-threading, and personally I have not apps really that would so I have no real need to run it on my i7 processor.

Having it disabled also means little lower cpu core temps as well, and if one is overclocking can lead to higher stable overclocks having it disabled.

At the very min an i5 2500K which by the way is an over-clocking beast. With the right fan/cooler it will clock to 5ghz easy.

I was considering upgrading my CPU until I realized when DCS is running its idling along at about 30-35% most of the time. You can see my system specs in my sig. I'm sticking with my CPU for now and going for a bigger Video card.

I wouldn't take that kind of data for granted. Utilities that measure cpu load seem very inaccurate to say the least. My old i7 960, OC'ed @ 4 ghz, gave me ~40, sometimes 50 fps on average. With a Skylake i7 6700K @4.2 Ghz it normally stays above the hundred. CPU load measuring utilities basically said the same with both the old 960 and the new 6700K, with an usage not going above 50%.

ofc, both systems used the very same video card, a msi 970.

Getting my friend's old computer since his job is buying him a new one. Going from an AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.4GHz and 8GB RAM to an Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0 GHz and 16GB RAM. Throw my current EVGA 970 oc'd and I'll finally be AMD-free. :)
