A-10C Battlefield Survival Tactics

Hey all!

I've been learning how to fly and attack targets using the A-10C and I can use most weapons, fly instrument approaches etc. I'll be darned if I can survive when I go to virtual war though.

I tried flying a campaign mission (downloaded one) and the target was advancing tank columns. The target was covered in air defenses but SEAD flights were going to soften it up beforehand. I took off with a standard load of CBU-87s, CBU-97s, and a few AGM-65s. I watched the SEAD flights attack a few targets, rtb, and then got a target assignment from JTAC, and was pointed in the direction of some tanks that he told me were in close proximity to SA-6s, SA-11s and MANPADs. I did some looking over the target using the TGP and couldn't locate these air defenses and decided to go for it.

I've tried this mission several times and I haven't had much luck. I've tried different tank groups, and different types of attacks. What tactics would you guys use in this situation? I've tried using CBUs at high altitude, in which I got hit by a sam while I had to fly level. I also tried as low as I could go with them (Bad idea...I know) and got hit by AAA coming off the run. I'm all for tank plinking with AGMs, but I'd definitely be rtb with some CBU's on the racks. I'm not a trigger happy guy, I'd rather survive with some weapons left over. Should I even be thinking about trying to use CBU's here, or should I just use AGM's and call it a day?

Thoughts on tactics, or techniques that might help me be effective and survive?

Thanks!

Justin

Hi, Justinm11! A10s are exposed to much more ground fire than most other aircraft in the air force, which is why they're armored like crazy. That said, in some recent conflicts they've been relegated to medium altitudes like 10,000 ft AGL for safety reasons-- to avoid getting hit by AAA and MANPADs. There are many surface to air systems that can reach higher than that, however, so you still need to know how to defeat a missile. The downsides of medium altitudes are that it's harder to visually identify ground targets, and you are more exposed to enemy fighters, so you'll need escort.

Since you have a JTAC spotting targets for you, I would consider a medium altitude (10,000 ft +) until the air threats are neutralized. After that, you can swoop in with your CBU 87's to finish the job (though they're poorly modeled right now so a lot of folks like the CBU 97's better).

In fact, I just ran some JTAC missions with a friend this week, and I stayed at 16,000 to 18,000 ft to take out anti-air with standoff weapons, then finished the final push with guns at low altitude. It was so much fun!

Could you post a link to this mission so I produce a video with some tips for you?

AWAITING ED NEW DAMAGE MODEL IMPLEMENTATION FOR WW2 BIRDS

Fat T is above, thin T is below. Long T is faster, Short T is slower. Open triangle is AWACS, closed triangle is your own sensors. Double dash is friendly, Single dash is enemy. Circle is friendly. Strobe is jammer. Strobe to dash is under 35 km. HDD is 7 times range key. Radar to 160 km, IRST to 10 km. Stay low, but never slow.

That seems to be a tough one. Can you post a link to the mission?

To be honest, getting your plane home safely is more important than trying a high risk CBU approach...

I would put some effort into locating the SAMs and use the AGMs on them and then go for the tanks. If you can´t make them out then better be safe!
