Tracking a real A-10C to it's airbase

Back when the A-10C was in Beta, I found a picture of a real A-10C on Google. In the picture the plane was powered up and the CDU screen was visible. I decided to take the L/L coordinates from the picture and see if I could find the position of the plane in the picture. Well, it worked. It was taken at Warfield National Guard, Maryland. Not far from my house in Maryland. I just got back into DCS after a few years hiatus.

Just wanted to share and see if anybody else has done this?

Here's the picture

Here's the link for google maps with the L/L already entered:

I thought it was pretty neat!

That is cool! Good catch :)

I live close to Martin State airport too. I really like watching the A-10s; I get by there as often as I can.

It's cool that the DCS A-10A and A-10C both have paint schemes for the Maryland Air National Guard :)

Always a great idea when you're in the military to not only take pictures of the inside of your working cockpit (got it, the sim already shows the inside of one pretty well), but to go ahead and show the exact location. National Guard. Hmph.

I live on the other side of town, but I've been out on that flight line a few times with the Civil Air Patrol. Never got too close to them, though (beyond the red line on the ground, the MPs can use lethal force.)

I wish I had my camera at the time, but once while on approach to Martin State Airport (Warfield is Collocated at KMTN,) I saw a flight of four A-10s break formation about 1000ft above the 172 I was flying in.

Also got two flights out of Warfield ANGB proper. One was in a UH-60, the other was a C-130, both with CAP.

Why? Do you think the location of the ANG home base, is a secret? Were the aircraft in a combat zone, such a photo might not have been allowed, but otherwise it was likely a sanctioned photo op.

Since there are some "locals" in this thread, here's a link to an article about pilots from the MD National Guard, in a combat environment:

http://www.stripes.com/news/special-reports/heroes/heroes-2014/we-ve-got-to-wait-for-this-weather-to-pass-1.288198

Snippet:

The challenges encountered by the two Maryland Air National Guard A-10C Thunderbolt II pilots on June 28, 2012, in eastern Afghanistan kept piling up: thunderstorms, poor visibility in high terrain, troops pinned down and under fire, shaky ground communications, low fuel.

But Cisneros and Zurkowski would play a critical role in keeping alive 90 coalition troops ambushed in a river valley. The weather forecast had been favorable, but thunderstorms moved in and visibility fell to near zero in a mountainous valley near the Pakistan border.

That was a good read, thanks! I'm about 1.5 hours south of Baltimore. Next to Patuxent River Naval Air Station

Nice place to be! I've been to a few air shows at Pax River. I bet you see a lot of cool stuff down there!

I live 15 minutes from Martin State airport. I see A-10s a lot, like when I'm running errands. They fly over my house occasionally. So I thought I had it made, but I think you've got me beat with Pax :)

I actually work on Pax River as a Ground Support Equipment mechanic. There's a few new aircraft here for testing. They've got the F-35, X-47 UAV, P-8, and Triton UAV to name a few. They even have a steam catapult here that they've launched the F-35 off of. There's a bunch of F/A-18C's here that I've been drooling over while waiting for the DCS F/A-18C. They've got two or three EA-18 Growler's too.

One of my coolest moments was walking on top of an F-18 to inspect a main aircraft sling. The plane was in "Shielded Hangar"; it's this wild hangar full of foam pyramids. The whole hangar is nearly sound proof, you basically have to yell for people a couple of feet away to hear you. They lift the aircraft into the air and do some sort of testing to them. The sling was already attached to the F-18 so I had to climb up the pilots ladder and inspect the sling on top of the plane. Very neat.

Here's a picture I found from the same hangar:

I would LOVE to see some A-10's here! I've seen some here years ago at Air Shows but they don't have many on Pax anymore.

That's an anechoic chamber, probably radar absorbent/non-reflective as well.

On the Maryland Air Natonal Guard site, there's a link to video for the "104th Welcome Home".
