Zimmerdylan
http://www.warbirdsnews.com/warbirds-news/warbird-collections/commemorative-air-force-news/1933-lockheed-vega-display-caf-airbase-arizona.html Finally!!! One of my planes made it into a museum. I have been painting WWII era AC for years. It has largely been just a good paying hobby. But this 1933 Vega is headed for A museum! Yay for me. I was kind of disappointed in the fact that the plane was not as elaborate as some of my other works, but hey.......I cannot complain. I really kind of wish it had been one of my pinup girls though. I finished this plane in 2013 I think. The guy who did the actual restore is Rick Barter out of Marana Arizona. It was his last plane due to health reasons. He retired a year later. Obviously, my artwork is not the reason that it is going (or has gone) into a museum. It is one of only 3 left. The other two are in the Smithsonian I think. Although I'm not sure. I do believe that this is the only one that is air worthy. Again....not too sure. I'm thinking that the other two are reproductions because one of them is suppose to be the model Amelia Eaheart flew cross country "solo". The last time I actually saw the plane it still had the engine off, and was a couple weeks from completion. It took several years to rebuild as Rick fabricated much of it in his shop. I only just found out about this today. Goes to show that I don't keep very good track of my works. I pretty much just paint em and forget em........ :pilotfly:

cichlidfan
That's still amazingly cool, even if it wasn't your favorite project. Congrats. Zimmerdylan
Here. I managed to dig these up from my Facebook page where I posted them in Dec. 2012. My father was that guy who painted the Mail Pouch signs on barns way back when. You older guys will remember those. I have been painting ever since I was a kid. Before, and while I was in college in Hartford Ct., I would go down to the shore with a bucket of brushes and paints and get a few extra bucks doing those logos and names you see on people's boats. I only manage to paint one AC every 4 or 5 years. It takes at least that long for them to be rebuilt. Some take 10 to 15 years depending on condition. Oddly enough, the cat was pulled from a template that I had to use. I guess that it was an air recon unit right at the beginning of WWII that this particular plane was assigned to. I still see one of those every time I make a trip up to the Pittsburgh area. I don't recall exactly where, and it looks a lot worse for wear these days, but I have been driving/riding past it for nearly fifty years. Mail Pouch stopped having them done in the mid 90's, and even then, they were just having the old ones redone much of the time. I remember my father actually doing one for Nabisco at some point. I was stuck painting the base coats as a kid. A lot of ungratifying labor for a young teen.
