DCS : F4U-1 Corsair

Yes but Bodenplatte targets were all in Belgium and at Metz, far away from Normandy.

Look, I think it's fine to use the 109 K-4 on a Normandy map, even though it's unrealistic. I'm just saying, I don't think we should be strict about using the Corsair there as well.

I agree with that for sure. I know I would use the Corsair anywhere I could ;)

Not so great. They are significantly more modern than this version of the F4U.

Aren't they both modeled after 1945 versions, I believe the 190 is based off a single squadron on the eastern front.

Either way, I'm not super interested in DCS WW2, specially the European Theater, and don't have these planes so I may be wrong again.

As far as I'm aware it never saw "action," just service and most of that was in the Scandinavian part of the world.

But I may be wrong

FAA Corsairs first saw combat action April 1944, flying from the HMS Victorious to provide cover for a strike on the Tirpitz in Norway. This was Corsair's first use in combat from a carrier. So should be ok in the Normandy area in '44!

Hey, I'm sure these have been buried in the forums some where. I thought I would put up a fresh link to Avialogs Website. The F4* Corsairs flight and maintenance manuals in particular. Avialogs seems to have most Marks of the Corsair for your reading pleasure in PDF format.

This is the FOI for the most common Marks of the F4U-1 I believe!:book:

Super excited for this module; the Corsair has always been my dad's favorite airplane, and when I was growing up we watched the old "Black Sheep Squadron" TV show, built models, read the manuals, flew it in Combat Flight Simulator 2 and IL-2 Sturmovik, you name it.

In my adult life I've been fortunate enough to work on the National Naval Aviation Museum's panoramic tour, which includes a panorama of an FG-1D cockpit (the Goodyear-built version of the F4U-1D).

http://www.navalaviationmuseum.org/nnam/virtualtour/?s=pano690

This aircraft has gone through several hands and was delivered to the Museum many, many years ago, so there are a few bits missing (e.g. the weapons panels above the main instrument panel, the arresting hook controls, its clock on the main panel, etc.), but it may serve as a handy reference.

I am realy curious which F4U is it going to be. We know only its going to be F4U-1 right? But is it F4U-1a or maybe the F4U-1d? Or maybe even F4U-1C with 20mm cannons?

The map (if true) Iwo-Jima would mean that its late 1944-45 F4U-1 so it shoudl be either D or C, but with Normandy and K4&D9 from ED we can see that maps are not realy tied completely with planes. So many questions!!!!

I am hoping for a non-birdcage version with the six .50 machine guns. It looks like the -1A was the most produced and also was the version flown by VMF-214 Black Sheep. From what I have read, it looks like the -1D was used at Iwo Jima. However, I am eagerly awaiting the release of the Corsair and will purchase whatever version it is!

F4U-1C: The prototype F4U-1C, BuNo50277, appeared in August 1943 and was based on an F4U-1. A total of 200 of this variant were built July–November 1944; all were based on the F4U-1D and were built in parallel with that variant.[69] Intended for ground-attack as well as fighter missions, the F4U-1C was similar to the F4U-1D but its six machine guns were replaced by four 20 millimeter (0.79 in) AN/M2 cannons with 231 rounds of ammunition per gun.[105] The F4U-1C was introduced to combat during 1945, most notably in the Okinawa campaign. Aviators preferred the standard armament of six .50 in (12.7 mm) machine guns since they were already more than powerful enough to destroy most Japanese aircraft, and had more ammunition and a higher rate of fire.[106] The weight of the Hispano cannon and their ammunition affected the flight performance, especially its agility, but the aircraft was found to be especially potent in the ground attack role.

In reply to Silver Dragon's post^ I thought the USN desperately wanted 20mm guns in their fighters to take down Kamikaze planes faster?

Despite radar detection and cuing, airborne interception and attrition, and massive antiaircraft barrages, a distressing 14 percent of Kamikazes survived to score a hit on a ship; nearly 8.5 percent of all ships hit by Kamikazes sank.

Possibly, but what the troops and pilots prefer doesn't always jive with the higher ups! lol

One of the things I am most exited about, is to hear how LN is making that beastly engine sound - For me to be able to hear that Pratt & Whitney 2000 hp roar add a lot of immersion

I can't wait to fly this module from some carrier deck :notworthy: I cri evrytime I think des

Really hope the "Whistling sound" to be implemented !
