Curious about Windows 10

Hey gang,

 

Ok so I keep getting this nagging reminder in my Windows 8.1 notification area, that I can upgrade to Windows 10 currently at no charge. I have not really seen any compelling reason to move up from my 8.1 64 bit, but am getting a little enticed I guess.

 

It would seem most that I have seen talk about 10, tend to like it. I am always somewhat skeptical when someone offers me something for fee LOL. I just have a feeling MS is getting , well let's say more involved in our personal computing habits with 10, but this is just conjecture on my part.

 

Nonetheless, guess I will consider it. Wife says they upgraded to 10 at her work, and she likes it pretty good.

The one thing that concerns me, and this may be not true and no issue, but seems like I read that with Windows 10, you are locked down to the hardware drivers MS says you can use. Like for my video card, I like to try different drivers as they come out - is this something one would not be able to do, with any of their hardware, is having the choice of the drivers one would like to run?

 

Thanks for any clarification on this. I build all my own systems, and tweak all my own hardware, and like to choose all my own driver I use on that hardware, not what someone else tells me to use...

In general Win 10 is fine.

The only drawback i find is that you have less control over some stuff (example: fonts on certain places) but mostly there is a work around to get what you want either through a tweaker proggy or directly through the registry. If you then keep these changed registry settings in a .reg file, the next time need to set up Win 10 for whatever reason, you simply merge those reg files with the register and all is again the way you want it to be.

 

I have changed quite a bit some video hardware drivers for testing purposes and Windows never complaned about me not having the latest driver installed. So i think that your problem is not really an issue.

 

The only thing that worries me a bit is the activation of a new Windows install on the same or on the same but changed machine (like videocard or motherboard change because of ended up in computer heaven). Still need to test that.

Ah good to hear, I thought I had heard Win 10 forced one to use the drivers it deemed appropriate, good to know that is not the case.

 

I may wait a bit longer and do some more reading in the meantime but will probably take the plunge before too long.

Windows might be forcing the driver but you still have the option to get notified before upgrades or other stuff is installed (i never put those things on auto), you also have the option to delay upgrades and... when a WHQL driver is released, it takes ages before it appears in the upgrade list anyway so time enough to act accordingly.

I would not worry about that to much. I don't regret my upgrade from 8.1 to 10. There are just a few things to get used to but then you have that with every change they make, even in here with DCS.

The upgrade advisor tells me all my system is good to go and should be no conflicts. I know for hardware there are typically separate drivers for Windows 10 versus 8.1.

I wonder should I uninstall say my video and sound card drivers, prior to going through the upgrade process, or will the installer take care of that for me?

 

Really would rather not go through the pain of a clean install at this point, prefer to wait till upgrading to a new motherboard for doing that.

It should be perfectly fine, also make sure if you have any custom sound sets for Windows installed you set them back to default to avoid permission issues, it seems strange though this was a massive problem for users that had them. Have fun! :thumbup:

Win10 is a win for now :). You can use whatever drivers you like, you will be asked aboout non signed drivers and with your accept the installation can continue.

 

Win10 has better graphic scalability and look on high resolutions like 4K.

 

Just go for it! :)

As far as I know - in W10, once you click "Accept EULA":

- there is a lot of your personal data coming out from your PC to some mystical servers belong to MS (and some unknown "third parties trusted by MS"), and you can't turn this off legally. And even you'll do this - MS have everything to override your blocking efforts anytime.

- MS will got rights to change anything in WIN10 using AutoUpdate if they decide to do so. One day your hardware can just stop working, like it happen lately with some joysticks over here. One day your software can just stop working as well.

- MS will got rights and all possibilities even to delete any software on your PC if they think it's "inappropriate". Without asking anything. Same AutoUpdate will deliver this patch to your PC silently.

-you can't completely disable AutoUpdate anyhow, except killing AutoUpdate at all (and this will cease some other things).

- your PC can just reboot itself it the middle of your work. Nothing saved, no questions asked.

Basically you easily can find a lot of things "you will can't and MS will do" with Win10 over internet explained better than I just did.

After all "Windows now is Service ©", so you will pay for the shiny wrapper of the service one way or another.

Happened before going from Win XP to Win 7 64-bit for Thrustmaster Cougar drivers. Thrustmaster released new drivers after a bit of a wait.

With Windows 10 you don't even need them anymore, it works out of the box...:joystick:

 

BTW, if you think your Win 7 hides you from the M$ grid... think again, you might reconsider your OS but then don't go Apple. And for what's it's worth... no DCS either. So what exactly is your point?

It is not a 'no gain' situation. In general, both Win8.1 and Win 10 are improvements over Win 7 in many ways.

AFAIK MS finally released a version of Win 10 that can be installed from scratch (doesn't require Win 7 or 8.1 up and running) and that accepts the key from a Win 7 or 8.1 for activation. At least that's what I'm hoping for. With a new SSD just waiting to be installed, that's my preferred way of figuring out how well Win 10 works for me and with my most important applications. If I don't like it, I could just wipe it, transfer the old Win 7 to the new SSD and stay with it as long as it's still supported (and as long as no other considerations like available DirectX versions sort of force an upgrade to a newer Windows).

While there are definitely concerns regarding Win 10 and MS' policies, TBH, I'm getting tired of it. Win 98 was the devil's doing (in fact I said back then I'd never install it! A year later I did, and it worked much better than Win 95...). Win 2000 was the NT/95 cripple bastard that worked surprisingly well. XP, of course, was the most ugly Windows of all times, and raised tons of privacy concerns, but it actually worked better (as in: more stable) than Win 2000. Vista was obviously a piece of junk and Win 7 the matured version of it. Of course Win 8 was the most ugly Windows since XP, and it raised more privacy concerns than any previous Windows.

 

So when someone tells me to be suspicious of Win 10, then yeah, I disagree with some of MS' decisions, and I'll do my best to set up an isolated, local installation that doesn't automatically sync all my porn with the MS cloud, but ultimately, it's just another Windows, and people will come to like it, and by then time Windows 11 comes out (if that ever happens), people will argue that it's the devil's making and will violently defend their Windows 10, because that was all good, well maybe not perfect, but definitely not as bad as Windows 11 was going to be!

 

Long story short, as long as I play DCS, I'm forced to use Windows anyway. Might as well upgrade to the newest version now.

Right, I'm still remember the day of installation MS DOS from 5 inch floppy diskette to 8086-87 AT PC of friend of mine. I saw all win-s since then, and I'm pretty sure that starting Win8 things goes down the pipes, once marketing join the band. Now you can see shiny new marketing paradigm "Windows is service", but _you_ is the product. Just deal with it.

 

And hey, take it easy, it's your choice in which pose you d' like to stand a front of microsoft. I'm not trying to change your decision by any means. :)
