A-4E By HoggitDev

Recommended Posts

The C yes, however no plans for the E, as it wasn't carried by the A-4E.

Oh, I thought that because the E was just a different warhead and fuze, it would be compatible with any aircraft that could use the C, and I know it was carried on the M.

Still, Bullpup's will be pretty fun to add into the game, I don't think there's any MCLOS weapons in DCS yet, so it'll be a first!

Yeah those stuff will be interesting to play with. Though, if Viggen beats this one to release, it would also beat AGM-12 to being the first player controllable MCLOS missile with Rb 05.

Wishlist: F-4E Block 53 +, MiG-27K, Su-17M3 or M4, AH-1F or W circa 80s or early 90s, J35 Draken, Kfir C7, Mirage III/V

Awesome news LevelPulse! Might make us forget about the sock.

Sorry if I've missed something extremely obvious, but what is "the sock"?

Small little update:

We are still working on the unwrapping for the A-4E, it's nearly done and so is the external 3D model. Some of the other modellers are working on the weapons, one of them being the B/MK-57.

We've also had some help from other people who've translated all the Russian comments on the arguments for the missile data.

We'll be posting monthly updates with screenshots and videos.

Finally a website is being worked on, if you have knowledge with Wordpress/HTML/CSS we would greatly appreciate your help!

HoggitDev February Update

HoggitDev February Update

EcfBs9L.jpg

It’s been three-and-a-half weeks and about 50 commits since our last update, so we are pleased to have an update for our friends on the Eagle Dynamic DCS forum.

Yeah, this is tough work. HoggitDev continues to refine models, textures, and code for their free-to-the-community flight module the A-4E. We picked up a few new members over the course of February, nearly doubling the knowledge base and manpower dedicated to resurrecting the “Scooter” for the best combat sim on the (consumer) market, just kidding. USAF, we know you’re not allowed to say you play!

We would also like to welcome to our dev team:

Uboats (Coding/Translator)

SilentEagle (Coding)

TightLeash (3D)

plusnine (2D/Artwork)

Zilch (Mission Editor)

Flanker (Manual)

Thrackerzod (Manual)

Let’s get to the departments for team reporting!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3D Department:

If you don’t know already, modelling everything twice, feels like a ‘good’ day. Some elements are crafted a dozen times to capture the character of the real-life content, and at 3-D, we’re on it. Kryb has got the hull nurbs refined, and is finalizing the unwrap. The GTC-85 ground start huffer will be added to the main external model soon. We still have a mountain of work ahead, like damage modelling and cockpit completion. Right now, we are striving to open up some work for the 2-D artists, by signing-off on completed texture mapping.

Key achievments this update:

External Model 70% unwrapped (Gear not included)

GTC-85 ground huffer 90% unwrapped

Cockpit 40% modelled

Looking ahead:

Damage Modelling

Gear Unwrap

Ordnance Skinning

Progress Shots

Cockpit:

Huffer:

Ordnance Hanger LOD: Image_007.jpg

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2D Department:

Model and unwrap changes necessitated a complete restart on the external textures, so while we wait, drooling over the fruits of the 3-D team’s continued labors, we’re collecting research and adding decal drawing to the team in producing several period-accurate liveries for the A-4 when the time comes.

Plans are in place to include a PSD template for community use once the aircraft is ready for testing.

We also created a few new assets for the user-interface in DCS World’s GUI and menus:

New weapon icons and airframe art have been added to the loadout editor

The A-4E has a new icon and logo for the main menu

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Coding Department:

We are implementing animations for player-controlled planes:

Flaps w/ continuous behavior and dynamic overspeed blowback

Airbrakes

Landing gear

Landing spoilers with weight-on-wheels detection

Flap blowback valve limits flap extension at airspeeds above 230 kts IAS based on approximation of drag forces.

Gears are able to extend and retract on player aircraft.

Landing spoilers are animated, and will extend upon touchdown if armed.

Inputs (Spoiler ARM toggle, stop flap retraction/extension)

Other: Some weapons, such as the AGM-12, and MK-77 don’t have DCS counterparts. We are researching how to integrate these weapons so their appropriate behaviours and controls are replicated in game.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Audio / Misc:

A PDF manual for the A-4 is also in the works and will be distributed with the module upon release. Additionally some work has been done on the AN-141 Low Alititude Warning sirens, and GPU start sequence. Audio dept. working also to acquire and implement IRL audio samples in-game.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank You!

Thank you DCS players, for providing HoggitDev with the talent, the drive, and most importantly the audience to appreciate our careful attention to detail and effort to put you in the cockpit of A-4E. We think you’ll find A-4E’s multi-role abilities a perfect match for your favorite DCS sorties, and we’ve loaded some extra pylons just in case. Speaking of multi-role check out this multi-roll…

Wasn't a third party dev shot down from making an A-4 by the manufacture? Won't this pose issues for this project?

Good luck in any case

Will not be an issue for us because it is a free project. We would possibly have issues if we needed a license..

As was asked in the other thread we accidentally made:

The A-4E carried up to two Sidewinder (AIM-9B) missiles on the inboard wing pylons.

It was never designed as an air-to-air interceptor, and has no air-to-air radar of any kind. However, they have EXTREMELY high roll rates and are very maneuverable, which made them good aggressor squadron aircraft (e.g. for TOP GUN).

The total list of possible armament is enormous, but mostly focused around ground attack (iron bombs, cluster bombs, napalm, shrike, walleye, etc.) and anti-shipping capabilities (mines).

Good to hear! Looking forward to it immensely. Is this planned to have some switch by switch level of functionality, or is this more FC3 style? I've often thought it would be pretty cool by me and quite attainable for some community modders to add a FC3 level high quality plane to the game. The F-16 is an example of an aircraft that would be a perfect fit

The intent of making or not making money with something has no bearing on a potential interlectual property rights violation.

Not saying that this is the case here - but just be carefull ...

It's complicated.

There's no such thing as generic IP rights. At least in the US, intellectual property rights are covered by one of copyright, trademark, or patent. By definition, you cannot copyright the function of an object. The shape of an airplane is functional, even if minor, because I trust that the designers of most planes don't put completely non-functional elements into the design of the wings, fuselage, etc.

However, all the systems programming/design/code/behaviors inside the real plane, along with the logos of the various corporations who contributed, are things that would still be protected by copyright and/or trademark.

Things like liveries are designed and painted by employees of the US Government, and as such, their work is in the public domain. This includes photos taken by sailors/soldiers used to re-create liveries.

Think of our effort as being done under artistic license. It will not be a perfect replica of an A-4E, but instead it will be our impression of a mid 1970s A-4E with the upgrades or modifications that we feel like putting on it.

More than anything else, though, we just came together as a group who wanted to figure out how to build an airplane model in DCS.

^ this!

That was all I wanted to get across. Just saying "we don't get money for it" is not enough to be safe.

I think Gos pretty much covered it for you :P You are definately right, however if the project was going to be paid there would be a lot more to take care of and to worry about. I think with how we are doing things right now we won't get into any trouble.

From the other Thread:

And Air to Air? Whats about that. Can we expect a good enemy for the Mig21?

What is a man if he loses his homeland? We, the pilots, must fly and take the first and the strongest impact of the aggressor on ourselves so we could save at least one child in this country.

From the other Thread:

For Air To Air the Skyhawk will be equipped with the AIM-9B, this is not exactly the best missile however when used correctly it should get the job done :)
