Mission 10 : Birds of prey

It really add to the ambiance and immersion all these voice over yes.

It's not just a dot it's a real guy ;)

 

BTW : I was nearly short on fuel at the end of this mission (and more with previous one). It will be great to have tankers in the vicinity :)

Appologies if I'm confused between missions, but I believe I had an issue with this one.

 

Assuming it's the one where you have to escort Shieffer (or what you call him) to be picked up by the Huey flight. I got all fixated and too close and kept overshooting my target before I got a firing solution and after doing pointless aerobatics over the battle missing everything I got a radio message:

 

"We've lost sheiffer, shieffer is KIA" and to RTB.

 

Then I started getting harrassed by the Huey flight about having them hold too long, but I no longer had the F10 menu option. Then the Huey flight moved in and landed at the LZ right in the middle of the enemy troops. Finally I got a call that Shieffer was onboard and to provide cover while the Huey egressed.

 

The Huey did not egress the huey sat on the ground and was still there after I landed.

Yup, that's the one. BTW, the callsign is "Schaefer", German for "Shepherd" (and also the name of Schwarzenegger's character in "Predator"). ;)

Yeah, it's quite demanding to maintain eyes on the car while navigating above the mountains.

 

In this mission, I prefer to do gun runs, because they're quick to set up, and if you manage to maintain situational awareness, you can roll in as soon as the bad guys start shooting and give away their positions because of tracers. You could also task your wingman to engage any targets available or have him take out the air defenses and tanks that appear at a later stage so that you can concentrate on the immediate threats to Schaefer.

 

I guess Baltic Dragon might find and easy fix and have the other units abort the mission as soon as Schaefer is killed, but personally (having given my voice to Schaefer) I'd prefer if you kept him alive. :D

Thanks paulca for your comments, I will have a look at that.

This mission is the most advanced one trigger-wise in the whole campaign. There are lots of conditions, flags, "if A and B happens, then C is true" but "if A and B happens, but D is false, then C is false" - what I mean here that there are lots of different possibilities depending on timing and order of things happening.

 

What I think happened here was just a specific set of triggers and timings that broke the whole system. Of course, as I've said, I will have a look at that and try to figure out a good solution, as Yurgon says. I need to make sure that Huey RTBs the moment Schaefer is killed.

 

I agree that this mission has been designed for gun runs - especially at the final stage, but not exclusively.

One problem I have with this mission is that the wingman does not want to take off!. He taxis but stops just short of the runway and sits there forever. Sometimes I can wake him up with "Rejoin formation" or "Fly to steerpoint" but it doesn't always work and I can't figure out the pattern. Sometimes he just takes off by himself after really long time, but he is so far behind that almost useless in combat.

That's weird. I had that problem in the A-10C Red Flag campaign in Nevada, but never in TEW. I don't think it's specific to this campaign; my guess is that it's some kind of bug that shows in the campaign (or some missions), but isn't caused by it.

So, I still don't know what is wrong with the wingman but I am pretty sure that he is waiting for the two F-16s that just landed to park. But they are behind him, there is no interference. Maybe just stupid AI...

 

Sometimes when I take longer to start the plane, we are taxiing behind the F-16s and this seems to work better. But if we are in front, the wingman seems to wait for them to park.

Something seriously weird happened to me in this mission. First, Schaefer was pronounced KIA, even though he wasn't (he was hit though). In fact there were zero losses on blue side! Then Chevy landed anyway and Schaefer was reported safe on Chevy. And then nothing happened for a long time. Ultimately mission was a failure. Track posted here:

EDIT: seems a bit similar to what happened to paulca here: http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=2719273&postcount=6 but my Schaefer wasn't dead!!!

To avoid this taxi behind the F-16s. The AI has serious problems dealing with taxiing when different flights are involved.

Oh my god, the wingman is so useless.

 

I got hit by one and I mean one bullet from the two ZSUs in the village, and guess what got damaged? The gun. I had no gun.

 

The final assault proved impossible to withstand, I spent all my rockets and bombs and destroyed a fair share of enemy trucks, but the wingman just wouldn't engage the rest.

So, I have this habit of playing with civilian traffic on. I must say it really adds a layer of complexity to this mission, since you're forced to actually ID your target before firing (or risk hitting a civilian vehicle).

 

That said, a bus I had not seen ended up just in front of the last CLA truck (heading the opposite direction), and I noticed only after having fired the gun. I genuinely felt horrible for the whole way back to the homebase. Let's just hope that bus was taking soon to be CLA fighters to the nearest training camp.

Hah, I know the feeling... I find civ traffic to make it too difficult sometimes or even breaking the missions (like "One for all, all for one", where if civ traffic is on it can collide with the landing Huey). It seems that the "Civ traffic override" in the mission editor does not work, so I advise anyone to turn the civ traffic in his own options.

I am in the mission right now, I called in Pontiac / UH60 to pick up Schaeffer but the helo just wont land.. hes hovering above the farm not doing anything..

 

There is a Truck and a Car at the farm, the car is destroyed and burning, maybe thats because he isnt landing ?...

Not trying to hijack the thread, but there has been a bug report submitted for AI helos that are not landing properly. Many of my missions in OPF are having issues due to AI helicopters not landing at their assigned spots.

This is an awesome mission! So dynamic and interesting, but it begs for ED to implement a save game feature!
