Windows 10 performance comparison?

Recommended Posts

Is Windows 10 working as well as win 7 home 64bit?

Can you just upgrade or do you need to do a clean install?

Thanks,

Will

upgrade is fine, I saw an improvement, but opinions vary.

If you do go ahead don't forget to deactivate your modules just in case.

Seeing more crashes or same/degraded graphic performance?

How do I deactivate modules?

I had improved performance.

A guide to deactivating modules is in your docs folder

Hello, for what it's worth, I did the upgrade to Win10 from Win7 Pro, I didn't deactivate any module or reinstall anything and it worked just fine.

I can't tell if Win10 works better. It's same or better than Win7, no issues at all for me but you may get some depending on your hardware, do some resarch first.

P.S.: Actually the only problem I had was with Saitek rudder, my mouse would freeze and beep when unplugging the rudder. After a while I did an in-depth cleanup of inf files, registry keys related to Saitek and it's all good now, I can unplug the rudder without fear of freezing my computer.

I strongly recommend going through every single driver and making sure to upgrade them to Win10 versions.

Even though most may work fine after the upgrade, leaving the old drivers in place can come back to bite you 'very hard' when you least expect it.

I did a clean install of win10 from win7 home. Downloaded setup onto USB stick, new fresh back up and then installed. No need to worry about remnant drivers or software. No regrets. Game performance seems about par with Win 7. And it's free.

I did the upgrade path and found performance was about the same. Did a clean install of Win10 on a freshly formatted hard drive and everything is night and day better.

That's my point. If you don't do a clean install, there is leftover garbage floating around which may, or may not, impact performance. Removing and reinstalling drivers can help, though.

Tbh, if you haven't done a clean install in a few years, even a clean install of the same OS can often improve things a bit.

If not too late for it, you "must" upgrade to Win10 if you want to avoid paying for it. What you do once your System is recognized by Redmond is up to you.

Again...if you do not own a W10 lic yet, you should go the Win7-Update-Win10-Upgrade Path to get the lic. What you do afterwards is totally up to you.

Upgrade or Fresh Install, both works if you know what you are doing, if not either one is risky either...LoL

  • 2 weeks later...

Window switching is a problem in win 10. But only when you're developing missions and writing scripts in a text editor.

I did a clean install from memory stick (win 7 pro to win 10) because of driver worries but now DCS crashes within minutes every time, had win 10 just a couple of days.

i5 4670 3.4ghz(no oc), 16gb ram, asus gtx770, msi gaming 7 motherboard, all with latest drivers. Because it's a clean install microsoft says I can't revert back but surely I can reinstall win 7 from my original disc. Any ideas ? It's driving me crazy, I never ever crashed with 7, except for my flying skills, LOL

If you did not use a cloning software and built a new disk to upgrade you are basically lost. Only possibility is to backup all your data and clean everything out when installing windows 7 again, sorry.

HiJack, hello,

I've decided to stay with win 10 for now. I have stated in a previous post that because of updates, 1.5 merging with 2.0 etc that I will leave DCS for a while until it's more settled. Gives me an excuse to save for new GPU and Occulus, apart from DCS all my other software (games, utilities etc) are running very smoothly, thanks for your advice though.

I will come back later.

I did the upgrade install from Win 8.1 to Win 10 back in Dec, worked very well. I did download and install win10 drivers for all my devices. Everything working very well. My win 8.1 install was done as a clean install at the time.

I actually hate Windowes10. When this system goes....It's MAC from now on. Hopefully ED will develop a MAC version of DCS by then.

As far as DCS performance with Windows10. I don't see any difference.

doubt it, as nearly every API is Windows only.

I didn't notice much of a difference in terms of stability when upgrading from Win 8.1 to 10. Some slight performance was noticeable across all games, however this was due to the DirectX 12.

From that perspective the performance and stability in games (and in sims) is mostly related to the hardware drivers and grahpics library (DirectX, OpenGL) version.

Consider that moving from Windows 7 to 10 can be a frustrating experience, maybe not so much of a shock as when moving from 7 to 8.1 but still the first impression may be that some features, especially configuration/administrations options are gone. At the same time a lot of bloatware is installed by default. Often it can't be also easily uninstalled.

No issues here with DCS and Win 10 also, but I've reverted back to Win 8.1 because I just don't like Win 10 not giving me the choice to not download updates.

Yes but the procedure have changed. Now you go to "Settings", Network & Internet" and select "Manage known networks". Select your network and then press "Properties", then you will see "Set as metered connection".

By doing this you will stop Windows from downloading updates.
