No, this is not true. The WWII 40mm Bofors is the L60. Post WWII it's the L70. Those two have nothing to do with each other.

Now, if ED wanted to do a quick refresh of the L60 to add to DCS-World as the L70, that would certainly be welcome ;)

Seem's then it is not allowed to put the Bofors L60 Flak in a Viggen Mission.....

Once you have tasted Flight, you will forever walk the Earth with your Eyes turned Skyward.

So I can't wait for this but I did catch ED being a little sneaky. The release date was written as April yesterday on Facebook and is now back to May...:smilewink:

It makes me a little sad, it must have been a mistake yesterday but either way this whole thing will be great when it comes!

As someone who worked with a modeller for weeks just to produce just one ship for the community only to see little uptake because it's a mod and that's way too complex for some people, I'm disappointed in peoples reaction to the extra choice Eagle Dynamics gave them by splitting the cost of the assets and the map. I find the intellect behind it selfish, I've found many posts lacked foresight or understanding.

WW2 was never part of DCS to begin with, despite the platform being free for the original 90's based weaponry and the continual development every week that's never announced in the weekly updates but you always find when you look through the encyclopdedia.

So to bring WW2 up to a standard (and a recent standard at that) it's a completely new factor for DCS that has nothing to do with it's original platform. To get there, (and I actually have been heavily involved in the modelling, texturing and LUA work for one unit) takes an inordinate amount of time that must be recouped.

I will proudly be hosting this DLC in multiplayer, with fantastic task based scripting, patrolling, AI slot balancing, flak and bomber escort. And the non complaining enthusiasts will be most welcome.

+1 !!!

Yes, but Bofors is not Bofors. The WWII Bofors is the 40mm/L60. After WWII they got phased out for the 40mm/L70, which has practically nothing in common with the L60, other than both being 40mm and both being from AB Bofors.

Nope

Although the L/60 was later replaced in production by the L/70, it remained in front-line service well into the 1980s. In most cases, these were the ground anti-aircraft versions, as a suitable replacement in this role did not come along until the introduction of truly effective MANPADS missiles in the 1980s.

In United States Army service, the M19 Gun Motor Carriage was replaced by the M42 Duster, using the same turret but based on the chassis of the M41 Walker Bulldog tank.

The L/60 saw active service with the Argentinian and British Navies in the 1982 Falklands War and continued to be used into the 1990s, when it was replaced by modern 20-mm and 30-mm artillery.

The L/60 Bofors fitted to the Kingston-class coastal defence vessel HMCS Nanaimo

The Canadian Forces also used Bofors on their surface fleet, but removed the guns in the late 1980s when they were considered to be outdated. Bofors continue to be the main armament of the Kingston-class coastal defence vessel, although the navy is in the midst of a search for a suitable replacement.[3]

Twin L/60 dismounted from an Argentinian corvette which saw service during the Falklands war

As of August 2006, the French navy uses L/60s on more than twenty ships (patrols and auxiliaries). Ships of the Norwegian and Icelandic Coast Guards continue to use the 40mm Bofors gun. The L/60 continued in use in the Irish Army until recent years, when it was retired in favour of the radar-controlled L/70. The Irish Naval Service P20 class retained L/60s on board as their main weapon until the 1990s but were rearmed with L/70s. The last remaining P20-class patrol vessel, (LÉ Aisling) due for decommissioning in 2016, is now the only vessel fitted with the L/70. Two retired L/60s can be seen adjacent the square in Sarsfield Barracks, Limerick.

The last 40 mm/60 Bofors in service with the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) were used as the main weapon aboard the Fremantle-class patrol boats, and for training purposes at the West Head gunnery range at HMAS Cerberus.[14] These were removed from service during 2007; Bofors were used aboard almost every RAN ship to operate between the 1940s and the 1990s.[14]

As of 2012, the L/60 is still in use by the military of Brazil, Paraguay and Taiwan.

All ED needs to do is add a compatability check to the MP list.

If you don't have the relevant modules installed, the compatability check is not passed.

Then, you can opt to buy/install the missing packs if you want them.

Other games do this already... . . rocket science it is not.

And this is exactly what ED is doing.

Our director decided to make this change last night to ensure time to include as many of the Assets Pack units as possible at release, and afford time to properly test the module check and notification system for SP and MP.

It could still release earlier, but this was the outside, safe estimate.

And yes, we are reading and considering all comments. Although a rough start, thanks for all the mature and constructive feedback guys.

Thanks

The trailer looks awesome!

As part of the original Kickstarter program, I have been waiting for this a long time. I am so anxious now that it is only a couple of months away. Nice to see I will be getting the map along with the assets pack as well based on my contribution.

I can not wait to see this map in all it's glory in VR!

Great job ED! and great job of fulfilling all the original Kickstarter promises! I like many others I am sure, are deeply grateful that you picked up the ball with this project and are seeing it through to it's fruition.

Truly a fair enough response Matt.

In regard to the units in the asset pack, couldn't the pack be handled in phases of delivery for the sake of timing? I really like the way NTTR was handled with the upgrade of the new content. Could that same approach be taken? Or is the module check and notification system foreseen as the real hurdle for timing?

I've read through all the posts in this thread and I'd like to give my 2 cents.

I'm a typical online simmer. I've never played through a single campaign since I started playing flight sims 13 years ago.

I am a Kickstarter backer who is qualified for the Normandy map, so I own the assets pack automatically. As a result, selling the Normandy map and the WWII assets pack separately won't affect my decision at all, since I don't need to make one in the first place.

First of all, there is no denying that more choice is better for offline players.

And I don't think the split of DCS: WWII online community, as some of the people here worried about, would happen this time. The reason is simple, we already have a pretty large player base that owns both the map and the assets pack, formed by the qualified backers.

I can foresee the most popular WW2 servers will be those using both the Normandy map and the assets pack. This will force new players to buy the bundle in order to join the online community.

However, their worries don't mean nothing either.

When ED starts selling the 2nd map and the 2nd assets pack in the future, it will be hard to judge what option most players would choose.

If initially the quantity of the players who owns both the 2nd map and the 2nd assets pack is LESS THAN that of the players who only owns the map because, let's say, the 2nd assets pack is overpriced, there will be more servers that opt to NOT use the 2nd assets pack.

And because the majority of the online community is playing in these servers, new comers will tend to take time and try the map first before deciding whether to buy the 2nd assets pack or not. This will further populate the servers not using the 2nd assets pack. Thus as the time goes by, the servers using the 2nd assets pack will eventually vanish. New players who love the 2nd assets pack will never be able to enjoy it online any more.

This is what happened to some famous AAA titles. And it is what some people here really concerns, if I understand correctly. I also don't want this to happen, because DCS: WWII has the potential to be the most realistic WWII flight sim humans have ever made.
