Auto Hover and auto collecting not working for me

definitely takes some practice. i still struggle with it. mainly when slowing down, i all of a sudden shift into backwards flight.

Agree, I have also put many hours into trying and haven't managed it yet... I'm relying on the 'Controls Indicator' (mini-hud) to let me know when auto-hover is engaged and will throw a party when/if it ever happens :cheer3nc:

I've got a curve of 20 I think on the cyclic roll and pitch axis, and use the doppler lines on the artificial horizon. It used to take me many frustrating minutes to get into an auto hover but with good curves and practice now it takes seconds.

It might help anyone who's struggling, to try practicing getting into an auto hover near the ground where you can use the terrain and objects as a reference- especially helpful when you can see your own shadow too.

@Birko

What HOTAS are you using?

A Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS X I got cheap from Maplin's when they used to be a thing

I'd be interested if some of us could compare tracks of us going into auto-hover, I did a quick demonstration it's not a marvel but it's 10,000% better than I used to do it lol

Thanks for clarifying - just wondered if you had the same stick as me.. (Warthog)... no probs ... will experiment with curves as you suggest

Yes, thanks, I think you're on the money and will experiment further.

Without making any changes, I managed to get it to hover once last night!

I was looking for the words to appear in the controls indicator - HOVER and COLL (as seen in video's I've watched on YouTube) but I only saw a white dot in the centre where the horizontal and vertical lines cross.

I was able to temporarily engage the collective and control ascent and descent ....

It occurred to me that maybe a 'reposition' mod I'm using had moved the square but not the writing (although I think they're all one thing)...

Anyway, I removed the mod and tried to get into a hover again to see if the words appeared, got close several times but not quite in hover state... aahhhhhhhhhhh!

I don't think it matters which version you try... the auto-hover technique should remain the same - but you need to be able to master it for the M if you want to fire the HOT3. Well, that is my understanding but correct me if I am wrong.

Some earlier video's on Youtube show the HOT3 being fired without being in a hover state but I am led to believe this is a pre-requisite now.

I have managed to get the L into hover a couple of times now but it's still quite a challenge

@solidGad same here... a bit better last night... auto-hover twice - think it is just a case of practice...

I also fixed the words 'HOVER' and 'COLL' which appear in the 'Controls Indicator' ...

I had previously moved the square to a different place on my monitor but the co-ordinates of the words are contained in a different lua

@Birko ... that's good news - I must have been misinformed - maybe confused - will try it out :)

This time I ignored the ADI and just kept an eye on ground speed and vertical speed. Lots of collective adjustments as I kept the vertical speed around zero while slowing down. I think I was chasing the DOP lines on the ADI. Ignoring it completely seemed to work for me.

@solidGad

... interesting, will try anything!

I don't know if you're aware but if you set the NADIR to VS DER, your ground speed is shown on the top line of the display and this is quite useful

... a challenge (for sure)... a few hours last night - got soooo close a few times but not the full monty :(

Which other things have you got switched on?

Thinking of auto-pilot and mode, magnetic brake?

... determined to beat it!

i seem to have it down pretty good now.

i have everything switched on that i normally would. nothing off anyways. i pretty much ignore everything but the vertical speed. last night as i was closing to within range of the tanks i was hunting, i put it into autohover on the first try. just keep the vertical speed at or around zero when you are slowing down.

I have no problem to engage the auto hover but last night in a Caucasia Training ground server with the M version was imposible, almost 5 km/h ground speed, almost 0 vs and with the chopper stabilized and the auto hover didn’t work, auto pilot on, giro on too but nothing happened.

I landed the chopper, turn off all the system and all on again including the turbine but nothing again.

Any suggestions?

Auto Hover and auto collecting not working for me

What DCS version?

Did you manual start or auto start? If manual start, try auto start....does it work ok if you auto start?

Are your 3 autopilot axis switches all up?
