There is nothing more off-putting than the word fanboy. Its use never keeps a conversation civil, and it immediately diminishes the value of whatever else the post contains. I say this because, as someone in the market for a new GPU, I really value reading the opinions of you fine folks, and I would hate to see intelligent conversation degrade into something less.

i'm sorry did the word fanboy trigger you?

but i kinda side with Skate on this subject and will wait for the REAL world benchmarks and AMD's release to decided on what my next computer will be running, as i plan on building a new system.

I think this is the card to get in the short/medium term IF you are MOSTLY interested in DCS performance.

The biggest things going for Nvidia 1080/1070.

  • 8GB of VRAM. DCS loves more RAM.
  • Much higher clocks. DCS can use higher clocks without ED needing to add any new code to DCS. Faster is just FASTER.
  • A similar architecture to the 980TI. Some would consider this a negative because AMD is pushing a more advanced architecture in their cards. BUT new architectures requires games to use DX12/Vulcan to make the use of the new features and DCS is going to stay with DX11 for the forseeable future.

Want the fastest DX11 card ever made. 1080 will probably be it.

Re:AMD AMDs new cards will have great DX12 perf. Perhaps better than NV. Most certainly better perf at a lower price point.

Does the release of the new 1000 series mean that I will soon be able to get a 980 Ti at a much lower price than now? When can I expect that price drop to happen? How much of a drop?

It's all bullshit untill they deliver. I do not trust either of these companies as the whole point is for them to make it look so much better than what it acually is..

I'll let people test them and then i'll see if i go Nvidia or AMD..

Nvidia Geforce GTX1080

So now this new puppy is out of the box, I'd love to believe the hype......

Apparently half the power usage, but twice the performance of the Titan, but at a much lower cost !!

If this is for real, it knocks the 980's sideways !.....Looks too good to be true, but apparently with VR in mind.....counting my spare cash as I speak :-)

From what I've heard, the non-VR numbers are less impressive but still a significant improvement. For me, I was planning to get a 1070 or AMD equivalent before the 1070 was ever hinted at. I typically try to update my GPU every 2 generations. The charts by nvidia I've seen all suggest a substantial improvement over their entire lineup even with the 1070 in all cases, not just VR. I've linked a reputable video below, the technical discussion starts at 3:15 and carries on for the rest of it.

With all the talk about upgrades justification, I would think 1080 will be a good upgrade for 580 that for some reason refuses to drive more then 2 screens : ) I'm really itching for a card right now and those 980TIs for ~550$ do look tempting, but 3 more weeks I think I will survive. I am very interested to see what the extra 100 buys with the "founder's" edition. I'm very much hyped .

I'll be waiting for the reviews. If it doesn't beat the 980ti I'll buy one of those 2nd hand while I wait for the 1080ti.

Also have to remember when the reviews come out showing the benchmarks look for the directX 11 game comparisons.

My PC is pretty much built just waiting for a GPU........

it'll be a big step up,

even more so when you add the 900 series Gimping code to the drivers. :-)

either way, I guess I wont have to upgrade my PSU anytime soon if top end cards will run off 1 8pin lead.
