GAZELLE COMPARED TO HUEY QUESTIONS

SCHOOL

Recommended Posts

1st post here guys. I plan on purchasing both modules and was not asking which is best. Just wanted to know how people feel they compare to each other. (flight, systems, sounds etc...) Also, how are the current missions for each. I see guys dropping troops with the huey and it looks like fun. How are the Gazelle missions and what are the tasks? I have almost all the fixed wing modules and the Blackshark so these are the next in line. Really impressed with Polychop's customer service and how they are on top of things...Nice job guys......

I also attached some shots of my almost completed pit running CH stuff for now.

Nice pit.

Hard to compare the two in my opinion because they sort of serve in different ways. Huey is a utility vehicle that is wide and big and heavy. Its' got a powerful engine to get things from one place to another. The weaponry on it is cool...but limited to unguided. She's also pretty easy to fly with a little learning.

Gazelle is a recon/attack chopper. She's light, nimble, sexy, and skinny. On long flights your can feel the cramp cockpit and the weird body odor of the commander. She's got a fan tail, which makes her unique. She got guided and unguided weapons (coming Soon™). She's easy to start up, but takes some time to learn to fly her. But when you do...its magical.

I love both helicopters a lot, but if you're just getting started I recommend the Huey. The Gazelle is a lot of very responsive flight model to tackle, and I promise you, learning how to fly the Huey will be enough.

Some might say that if you can fly the gazelle, you can fly the huey. I would agree, but the trick is to learn how to fly, and it's much easier to do in the huey, but while learning a basis for the gazelle (i.e. you won't develop any bad habits). Additionally, the Huey has a longer rotor which means ground effect kicks in a bit sooner (and is much more noticeable). This is great for learning how to fly low; I can keep the huey between 15-30 feet AGL with no problems. The gazelle is very nimble, but the huey is nimble enough. After learning to fly it you can get it to do exactly what you want it to do.

Hovering the Huey is often described as balancing a bowling ball on top of a broomstick using an open palm. This feels pretty accurate, so taking it a step further, flying the gazelle is taking the bowling ball and broomstick and balancing them on your head.

For sounds, both are great. However, the huey sounds are so iconic that spinning it up from a cold start is always a blast.

Huey - Trust worthy wife that keeps the family going

Gazelle - Crazy girlfriend gets you to do crazy shit because it's fun

lol

... but I am not sure how, for example, the Mi-8 or the Ka-50 would fit into this analogy ...:D

If you master the Gazelle all others will be easy to master.... unless we get a Nam OH-6/AH-6 of course.

HP G2 Reverb, Windows 10 VR settings: IPD is 64.5mm, High image quality, G2 reset to 60Hz refresh rate as standard. OpenXR user, Open XR tool kit disabled. Open XR was a massive upgrade for me.

DCS: Pixel Density 1.0, Forced IPD at 55 (perceived world size), 0 X MSAA, 0 X SSAA. My real IPD is 64.5mm. Prescription VROptition lenses installed. VR Driver system: I9-9900KS 5Ghz CPU. XI Hero motherboard and RTX 3090 graphics card, 64 gigs Ram, No OC at the mo. MT user  (2 - 5 fps gain). DCS run at 60Hz.

Vaicom user. Thrustmaster warthog user. MFG pedals with damper upgrade.... and what an upgrade! Total controls Apache MPDs set to virtual Reality height with brail enhancements to ensure 100% button activation in VR.. Simshaker Jet Pro vibration seat.. Uses data from DCS not sound.... you know when you are dropping into VRS with this bad boy.

Well, the Ka-50 is so heavily augmented that it's comparable to the medicated crazy girlfriend. It gets problematic when she's running out of meds (or turning the AP modes off in the Ka-50).

The Mi-8 is the crazy girlfriend after she became the overweight wife... :music_whistling:

Sounds???

IMO, Polychop have totally nailed the sounds of the Gazelle. The high-pitched whining engine sound is spot-on to both real world Gazelles as I remember them (haven't seen many, though) and documentaries and videos that I've watched a lot of in the past couple of weeks. Also, blade flapping/blade loading sounds great and give you an appreciation of the amount of stress they're under.

The Huey's stock sounds are okay-ish, but I'll never go back to them since I've found Skullz Genuine Huey Sound Mod which is a lot closer to the real thing.

In terms of mission variety, the Gazelle's soon to come Sniper team will certainly add some variation there. The scout aspect will probably work best in MP, but with 4 HOT missiles it does pack quite a punch.

The Huey can be flown as Gunship, Cargo, Medevac, and it can carry sling loads (actually the Gazelle is the only DCS heli so far that can't), which allows for a broad range of missions.

With both choppers I can't wait for shared cockpit in Multiplayer. The Huey will be the perfect training helicopter for new pilots this way, and the Gazelle will be a lot stronger in the tactical area.

Regarding module completeness, the Gazelle is already almost feature complete AFAICT. A few things are still missing (radio selector, Day/Night Weapon system difference), the Flight Model will be tweaked a bit to address some issues, and some upgrades are still to come (Rockets, Gun, Aiming sight), but I'm positively surprised by how complete it felt right at first release.

BST are taking their sweet time to finally add engine management/overheating to the Huey, and the shared MP cockpit was one of the announced features when it came out, yet we're still waiting for it despite the module being declared Release Version (no longer Beta) a long while ago. AFAIK they depend on ED to provide the shared cockpit feature. Still, the missing overheat feature and the very long delay for its implementation are disappointing after the initial joy over an awesome module.

Basically, you can't go wrong either way because both modules are awesome, and both are a great first release from the respective teams. The Huey is awesome for learning the ropes, but the Gazelle is just sooo much fun to fly, I can't stay away from it ever since the module was released.

Learn to fly the huey first, you will respect VRS which is not as much of a factor in the gaz. Then you take what you learned and throw it away (except vrs knowledge) and learn to fly the Gazelle. If you do it the other way around you might stop playing dcs all together lol To me the Gazelle feels like your constantly balancing a really stable airplane on a razor thin edge...come off the edge you will have a seizure due to the spin or whatever crazy maneuver she'll throw you in. The Huey is a mans chopper, bigger, faster, more weapons and firepower, and more forgiving. But the Gaz will grow on you. Nothing will replace my Huey love, but the gazelle is inching her way into my heart.

[sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]1000 miles of road will take you around town, a 1000 feet of runway can take you around the world...unless your in a Huey, you can go anywhere with no runway in a Huey!

Based on the comments, I picked up the Gazelle last night and I was really impressed with the module. Sounds, modeling and flight dynamics are amazing. The helo felt light and nimble with a touch of general aviation in there too. Great job Polychop!!!

Attached are my recently completed rudder pedals. The entire unit hangs from the ceiling of the pit so all you see are the actual pedals. (image shows pedals upside down.)

+1 on these all these comments, the sound is superb in this module and is something I really am starting to appreciate.

lets have a shot of the pit school, a bit of chopper sim porn don't hurt no one.:D

And the Kamov KA-50 is death that defies gravity and turns the corners that only the bogeyman comes around.

I find it very difficult to transition between both. Fly the gazelle for an hour and the Huey is a lumbering ox. Fly the Huey for an hour and the twitchyness of the gazelle will have you seriously over compensating on the controls. This is seriously evident when flying them in the rift. The gazelle reacts the same as the Huey with about 1/4 of the control movements which makes it very sensitive to fly and requires a light touch. The Huey is, well, about the total opposite of that.

Thanks again guys for the info. I'm having a blast with the Gazelle. Just wish there was more action on the Nevada MP.

Photo shows my pit nearing completion. Moved the stick to center location which I absolutely love. Gear lever is finished, switches are in. Just need the keyboard emulator to make everything active. Any suggestions on which style to use with DCS? Looking at the desktop aviator stuff right now.

27" monitor is fine for now. Especially with Track IR.

Collective is next on the list. It will be an entirely new left panel that is swapped out.
