Evening,

Couple of more WIP pics of 3d printed bits and bobs.

I've pretty much committed to buying a laser cutter as I want to back light these the panels now.

Cheers,

Mumbles

You are my only chance to ever get near a (VR) Simpit. Hope to get access to your files as you go along.

Just wonder what all these might cost to print with a commercial provider, since I have a) no idea how it works and b) got no equipment.

Afternoon all

All these pictures are making me drool! I've got the father in law coming over this weekend to check out our loft for electricals. It is converted and was previously wired, but F/I/L rewired the rest of the house and discovered that it was dangerous hence no electricity up there currently. I've also started ordering some switches, arduinos and LEDs etc. Currently in the midst of drawing up the engine control panel and I'm thinking an easy small project will be an AOA indexer. Actually for anyone interested there is an Android AOA indexer on the play store specifically for DCS. Just requires a small Lua file download into DCS.

I would imagine 3d printing will be more expensive than laser cutting, but obviously that's still not cheap.  Are you in the UK? If so I have a laser cutter and would be happy to make you some panels for cost as I'm drawing up my own at the moment.

Thank you for your offer, but sadly I am on the mainland Europe and with all that new tax things that popped up, it will be most probably very expensive.

Yeah I think you're right. I wanted to order the Virpil F-14 stick and base with an extension but the duty now on coming into the country would likely be an extra £100. Maybe I'll get to Bulgaria again one day!

Maybe the best thing to do would be to save up and get yourself a laser cutter. Mine was £350 from eBay, I just saved a little each week until I had enough for that and an air assist set up. Then once you have it, inkscape is a free design software, and K40 whisperer that controls the laser is free too and you could sell completed panels to make some money back.

Honestly for the reduced functionality I find the VKB and Virpil iterations a bit too pricey.  If you're doing a replica pit, worth it but otherwise I'd recommend MCG ultimate for more functions.

I'm gonna get around to 3d printing one from Sagil on cgtrader along with the LANTIRN stick. https://www.cgtrader.com/3d-print-models/hobby-diy/mechanical-parts/f-14-rio-lantirn-stick-suitable-for-dcs-f-14-simulation

After I finish my vertical panel button boxes.

They look alright actually... If I had the room to do both seats I'd be happy with the 3D print for the RIO. Unfortunately 3D printer isn't something I have access to.

Salute,

Hey punk, sorry to bother you again, I’m wondering if you or anyone with access to a f14 throttle set could help me with some questions I have.

im looking for some info on the flap leaver and handle, first up about the size amd shape of the flap handle but more importantly the height of the leaver above the panel, if there are any angles what are the measurements etc etc the more info the better if possible! I want to make my own lever to go next to my warthog throttles and I want to get them as close as possible to the real thing, any pictures and measurements would be a huuuuuge help 🙂

As always thanks in advance for all your time and help with this 🙂

It would be great if we could get some idea on when we can get all the keyboard bindings finished for the Tomcat so we can make full use of our pits, cheers!

Good Morning Gentleman, the temperature is 110°

Holly shit it's Cobra.... Enough crap out of me for for one post.

Gunslinger, while the 3d printed stuff looks fancy, the skills required in comparison to you're amazing pit cannot be understated. If you ever do decide to change some of the parts out, all the electronics you have made can just be move over to the 3d printed parts if you ever decide to go down this route.

Lt_Jaeger all the parts, drawings and whatever else you need to make my pit are/will be hosted here for anyone to use. I just like to idiot check my work before I post it to the masses.

3d printing ins't as expensive as you would think once you get your hands on a printer. PLA is about $15-20USD a roll and a decent 3D Printing with a bed large enough to do these parts is in the $550-650 USD dollar range. Something like the Ender 5 Plus isn't a bad option. Just do some research before you squeeze the trigger.

I finished off the HSD this morning. If anyone is going to try and make the screen work let me know if you find a OLED/LCD that fits. 70's era CRT's are a bit hard to come by.

I'm hoping by the end of next week most of the 3D designs for the front instrument panels and HUD will be complete.

Punk, Doc Harley or anyone else who can help I would love to grab some measurements for the Gear, Hook and Canopy Jet Handles.

Cheers,

Mumbles

Any of you guys also running a Virpil Tomcat stick with the currrent T50 base and 200mm curved extension? If so, how are you mounting to the floor?

Not planning a full-on cockpit but I'd like to arrange something with the most important controls, and I've got some Crosswind pedals coming in so I need to find some way to get my stick at the right height but also not be so cumbersome as to keep me from being able to reach the pedals. Current setup is really ghetto and made of wood, and there's no way to get to the pedals.

I've looked at some of the pre-configured sim seat frames but none have stood out so far as having a bar or plate to mount it on, plus trying to get it solidly mounted so it won't flex around.

Half the right console almost complete. I should have the whole right console mostly complete this week!

Wait, "Tape player" panel? I didn't see this in a Tomcat.

Otoh there's a lot of work to make the "Air Condition" panel actually working in real pit 🙂

Tape Player is my own little design! Danger Zone on command! Lol! Yeah the AC panel is a bit of work with the 3d printer as well. However its going to be fully functional!

psyko,
Sorry, just finished up making some vids of the quadrant for a gentleman in France who is making his own. I will pull it back out and try to get your questions answered, but it might be a week or so, I am dealing with a lot of back pain right now.

mumbles,

I may have an ejection handle somewhere. I will look for it. I wish I had the others. Share what you find I hope. See above for time scale.

@hitmanalpha1 That looks awesome! Every time I check back here there's something else that makes grin like an idiot! I've finally started to play with a couple of bits myself. Cut the NWS indicator box but I've screwed up the front panel so I'll be doing it again (again!)

I have had a bit mess around with an Arduino too and managed to get a makeshift AOA indexer working. Got the plastic designed just need to cut it on the laser. I'm quite pleased with the indicator light box, and once I have it set it I'll post a couple more pictures. I've actually started a YT channel too but not recorded anything as yet. Once I'm 100% happy with it and the indexer I'll upload the SVG files.

I would suspect the Cubesim panels are very close and could fit without much trouble.

Using some very specific assumptions on sizing and a touch of descriptive geometry against Punk's original images, these are what I found as baseline numbers for my own such project.

The table at top and the graphic at the bottom (which conforms to the NATOPS description of the throttle throw, including the off/idle gating) converts the circumference traveled of throw to degrees for more accurate spacing.  The dimensions on Punk's original photographs appear to be 6" with "inward" stops pushing it below that.  My rough estimate puts it at the 5.825, which makes it exactly an 80 degree throw at the 4.17 height "panel" height for the throttle circumference.  That specific accuracy makes me think it's very close, as the angle can be more closely patterned than the dimension for fabrication of said form.

I'm quite space-constrained, so no cockpit for me.  I'm jealous of the quality of the work on display in this thread though!

I am building switch panels that are more for quality of life than a true 1:1 reflection of reality, but I'm mostly using PCBs to do it.  I print a basic enclosure and mount the PCB to it.  They're not pretty, but they work well enough, are cheap, do not take up too much desk space and are fast to design.  My Jester control board has been revised a few times now, as I've added features, taken away features, changed layouts, and finally changed from a Pro Micro running Mmjoy2 to a Raspberry Pi Pico running a modified sketch based on the Real Robots Configurator.  If I was going to build a cockpit, I'd be inclined to stick with the Pro Micro due to the ease with which you can add shift registers, but being able to mount the Pico directly to the PCB via castellated holes (not to mention price and availability) inspired me to change hardware.

I'm not quite finished building the display control panel, as I'm not happy with these particular switches.  But I'm pretty happy with how the panels have turned out so far.  Next panel is going to be for the AP panel (and I'll add an O2 switch and ejection seat arming switch because VR and lazy).

That looks like a good solution, I'm quite lucky that I do have the room to build a full front seat setup, but good on you for having something. I think each part that you don't have to have a keyboard press for makes it more enjoyable.

Yes! You definitely deserve some time to fly! It's all good and well getting lost in the build, but the reason we do these things is to enjoy them!

I also figured out the ACM thing I was asking about before. I thought it was a toggle switch under the ACM cover but then realized that it's a "foot switch" I also noticed in DCS bios that there is the code for these lights. So when you flick the ACM cover up the missile prep, sidewinder cool and fire rate all switch on. The code will read the light indicators in the game and turn the relevant light on behind the "switch" I'll probably just use tactile switches behind each of those to change mode. Hope that all makes sense!

Have a good day and happy flying all.
