GTX 1060?

Recommended Posts

Hey Folks. I'm currently running the following:

  • Windows 7 x64 Ultimate
  • 16GB DDR3
  • i5-3570K (3.4GHz, OC'd to 3.8GHz)
  • GTX 570 2560MB x2 running in SLI
  • 1920x1080 primary monitor with 1280x1024 secondary running my MFDs

I originally picked up the GTX 570 2.5GB version in the hopes of future-proofing through SLI. It initially worked fairly well for most games. DCS, as always, is an obvious exception. I've had nothing but trouble trying to get it to behave with SLI. 368.81 seems to have killed SLI for me altogether (AFR2 only gets ~10% usage out of 2nd GPU now) and I can't figure out how to fix it. I'm currently kinda poor (too poor to dump $500 into a new GPU). My bro-in-law just told me about the GTX 1060 (coming out in 2 days), which sounds like a poor-man's GTX 10-series that still performs pretty well. Any thoughts about using it in DCS? From what I've seen, people seem to have had pretty good luck with the 1070.

tl;dr do i upgrade from GTX 570 2.5GB x2 to GTX 1060 6GB x1?

yeah or AMD RX 480 if you have no budget, no benchmarks for the 1060 to compare to but the price looks to be 249/299 but the 49 is the bottom of the barrel refrence cards and all the aftermarket and FE's will be in the 300 range just like the 70/80 cards.

Im expecting the 1060 performance to be roughly as the 970. nVidia has a history of doing that, so a 660 performs almost like a 570, a 760 almost like a 670, 960 almost like a 770 etc.

  • 2 weeks later...

Now it's released, 1060 even aaaaaalmost as good as 980!! (even better in specific games)

DCS Wishlist: 2K11 Krug SA-4 Ganef SAM, VR-TrackIR icons next to player names in score-chart

PvP: 100+ manual player-kills with Stingers on a well known dynamic campaign server - 100+ VTOL FARP landings & 125+ hours AV-8B, F-14 crew, royal dutch airforce F-16C - PvP campaigns since 2013

DCS server-admins: please adhere to a common sense gaming industry policy as most server admins throughout the industry do. (After all there's enough hostility on the internet already which really doesn't help anyone. Thanks.)

For that money and 6GB VRAM it's a clear GO ;)

Same fps +/- a few as a 980GTX that was once 3x the price. Not bad !

For DCS maybe the better choice over the Radeon480/8GB despite its +2GB VRAM

Is it really that good (for a midrange product that is)? I'm starting to think about replacing my good ole' 780, but being rather tight on budget, certainly can't afford ridiculously priced 1070s and 1080s. "The sixty" suddenly shapes up to be a very interesting offer.

If you have no plans to ever use SLi, yes, otherwise try and go for 1070,

1060's have their teething issues w/ drivers etc that every card has.

I just got a 1060 yesterday and does really well at 1080p. most (not all) of my settings are on high and it holds 60fps with very little stuttering.

Shadows on ULTTRA might be a killer setting..ehh dunno if it really pays back visually to put such a burden on the machine.

Otherwise, if you are capped to 60fps screenwise, why not do that if the GPU has the power ;)

it depends on your monitor, but most monitors can only display 60 frames in a second, aka 60Hz...

there are 244hz monitors though... and most gaming monitors are 144hz (my asus ROG swift is 144hz)... but a standard desktop monitor can only display 60 fps, even if your videocard is rendering 500 fps...

I know that :), and I use vsync when i actually fly to keep it at 60. I was just unsure what you ment by that.
