Monitor upgrade

Recommended Posts

Hi gents

Currently i have single 24 inch monitor.

I am thinking of making an upgrade. Here is the possible scenerios:

- Buying a 27 inch monitor, selling my old monitor

- Buying another 2 monitors and making a triple (i have gtx 970)

- Keeping my monitor and getting a 19 inch monitor to use with helios.

I have amblyopia and suffer when i play too long, will bigger screens in these cases tire my eyes more than my current setup ?

Budget is also a serious factor.

I would suggest to save money for a 27'' 2560x1440 GSYNC monitor. Changing 24'' 1080p to 27'' 1080p IMO is not worth the fuss.

Check some tests if 2560x1440 would be a berable performance hit for you. It will be noticable but should be berable. 34'' with 3440x1440 could be too big performance hit and smaller resolution for 34 does not make a sense.

Having a gtx970, a 21" 16:9 and 2 19" 4:3 monitors, I say it is well worth it. Unlike what razo+r said, it runs it pretty well. I am usually getting between 30-90 fps depending on the server I am in. The extra peripheral vision is a huge advantage, especially combined with Track IR.

My graphic settings are as follows:

Textures : High

Terrain Textures: High

Civil Traffic: Off

Water: Low

Visible Range: High

Heat Blur: Off

Shadows: Medium

Resolution: 4384 x 1026 (odd res due to having 1 16:9 and 2 4:3 monitors)

Monitors : 1 (doesn't distort the sides as much)

Cockpit Res: 512 (1024 works as well)

MSAA: 2x

HDR: On

DOF: Bokeh

Lens Effect: None

Clutter/Grass :750

Tress Vis: 20,000

Preload Radius: 110,000

Anisotropic Filtering: 2x

Flat Shadows: On

Disabled Aero Interface : unchecked

Vsync : unchecked

Fullscreen: checked

I have a Dell 34 inch? or 32? cant recall exact dimensions, ultra wide, which is amazing for this game...well most games in general, I would save up.

Monitors are things that are the visual portal into your system, never once do I think people say "why did I spend so much on this monitor..." At least I haven't with this one.

Hi all,

I found this thread and I'm in exactly the same situation. I am considering to buy a new monitor. Currently I have a 24" regular monitor and I would like to go larger now (single GAMING monitor). I just came back from the store where I got dubious advise after having done some research myself which I find hard to keep up with (AMD freesync, nvidia g-sync, 60Hz or 120Hz, 2ms or 4ms difference are all new to me:unsure:). They suggested freesync monitors for an nvidia card?? That's technology that you cannot use according to most posts I found on the internet.

My specs:

Intel i7-3770K @3,5 GHz

Nvidia GTX 970

16 GB RAM

Windows 10 x64 Home on an SSD, all games installed on 7200RPM 1 TB hard drive.

Budget: I'd like to stay below 400€. One of the 3 monitors they suggested is a 289€ Iiyama G-MASTER Black Hawk GE2788HS-B2 (AMD FreeSync!!)

Is that like a dumm-ass step to go for freesync if you have nvidia and would it make a big difference to go for a g-sync supported monitor for my nvidia card instead of a freesync monitor and not being able to use it? I have no clue at all anymore and I'm totally lost.

Thanks for the help

Buying monitor with FreeSyncfor while having an NVIDIA card you'll end up spending a lot of additional money for feature that you'll not be able to use. AMD cards support Free-Sync monitors, nvidia cards - G-SYNC.

If you have a NVIDIA card just buy the G-SYNC monitor if you care for adaptive refresh rate synchronization or just get a monitor without freesync/gsync.

As for the max refresh rate 120 and higher is generally a better option than 60Hz. I don't get why 60Hz monitors are still in production while even a cheep TVs are at least 100Hz. Assuming 2ms/4ms are values of the response time they aren't a crucial criteria for simulators, maybe more important for a hardcore FPS gamers.

120 hz for other games could be great. But DCS you'll be hard pressed to get that frame rate no matter what GPU you have because it's limited by your CPU. My specs below don't get 120hz from DCS. So if you've got the GPU power, go for 4K and 60hz. The extra resolution is incredible in a flight sim.

ebabil, here are some pics. Sorry about the somewhat bad quality but hope this helps

side note: middle monitor is an Aveis, you probably will never find this brand but if you do, stay away, it was just really cheap for me at the time. However, the NEC monitors are great.

The 41 in the bottom right of the second pic and the 117 in the last is the fps, though it is in a single player setting with no AI at all.

Hello. Instead of buying a new 27" monitor, what I did was purchase two additional cheap second hand 19" 4:3 monitors (people are almost throwing them away) and place one each side of my main one. I use the centre 24" monitor to play DCS, the one on the left for referencing the manual or mission information and the one on the right for keyboard controls, HOTAS configuration or web browsing. When not playing DCS I get the advantage of an extended desktop. That being said, I work in IT so part of of my decision was practical as I find multiple monitors useful for work.

thanks for the pics and tips.

if i get this touchscreen monitor, will i be able to use as helios device, to control switches and buttons by touching?

I'm not exactly sure if it'll work with in cockpit switches. The only reason though I can think of it not working some switches require right mouse clicks while others require left click.

If you're talking about a dedicated Helios screen (without any in game video) it will work. I actually used to use a touchscreen as a fourth monitor with a custom made Helios profile for the huey. It lowered my fps too much (I had a gtx 760 at that time). I should hook it up again though since I still have the screen laying around, I'm kind of getting short on desk space though.

It appears to be only 1600 x 900 though. I would suggest more so going with at least a 1920x1080, higher or better yet 21:9 monitor without the touchscreen capability. This however is solely my opinion.

in fact, i want smallest solution for helios due to desktop limitation. i think they are just 2d panels, do i really need more than 19" screen for it?

I have

60-90 fps in Mi-8 in BlueFlag

100-145 fps in FC3 modules in most scenarios

45-65 Ka-50 ( bad fps now, must be the version etc.., usually same as Mi-8 )

100-145 in WWII planes

80-120 in M2k

etc... actually ONLY the Ka-50 is aroumd the 60Hz range, all others way above, with system in sig.

If you play at 1920x1080 it's even higher.

The last test I made myself was the Free Flight in the F-86. Max graphics. And I think I was in the 80s. And I'm running an overclocked 4790. Setting the resolution to 1080p vs 4K made no difference so you can tell it's being CPU limited. It depends where you're flying and what you're looking at. 120hz in 4K would be awesome but no GPUs are up to that task yet.
