Good Ultra wide monitor for DCS

Recommended Posts

Hello fighters,

So my old monitor got destroyed and I need to buy new one. I have read somewhere here that is better to go for Ultra wide monitor than 1080p.

I have GTX 970 and TrackIR5. No plan for VR at this moment as I am planning to build a simple cockpit. 4K monitors are way expensive and need strong graphic card.

I have searched and based on my budget LG 29UM68-P 29-Inch is most suitable so far. I know it has AMD FreeSync which I will not get benefit from it but overall it's looking a good monitor.

Any one has feedback about this monitor or a better one (<400$)?

thanks

My friend have this monitor, but he don't play DCS World, but the quallity of image is very good. He plays I Racing most of the time, so the ultrawide monitor makes the difference for racing games. The only problem is when he turns the fan when it's hot on his room, the wind makes the base of the monitor shakes the entire unit a little bit.

if you plan for 1080p i would suggest a 29" ultrawide 21:9 monitor as the quality is 2K ..... if you consider bigger ultrawide 34" go for 1440p

i have currently this and i love it so far

Guys after searching more I am king of confusing!

what will be best for DCS;

1. 2K > 1080p or 1440p?

2. if 1080p is better then am going for LG 29UM68-P and done

2. but If 1440p is better, will 25" monitor be enough or better to go 27"

I found 1440p

- 25" > Acer H257HU or ASUS MX25AQ

- 27" > Acer H277HU or ASUS MX27AQ

Seems Acer has faster Response Time

Ultra-wide is a great option as its proportions are closer to the natural human vision - which horizontal field of view is much wider than vertical.

The result is much more immersion in any game. The benefit of additional, peripheral vision is easily noticeable and provides an advantage in DCS. After spending some time with ultra-wide there is just no going back to 16:9.

If the budget allows I would highly recomend 3440x1440 34'' monitor.

I have the MG279Q , its faster than the MX27AQ (144hz vs 60hz) and has Freesync if you ever go AMD.

anyway i`m very happy with it , and if you are content with 60hz than i would go ASUS

4K res would be pretty hard on any setup and i don`t think the price for the hardware is quite there yet.

I'm also in the market for a new monitor. $300-$400 is a little steep for me so I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a good small ultra wide for $200 or so. If ones at this price aren't worth it I understand. Currently have a Smsung Syncmaster 931b ( 5:4, 19",1080) so it wont take much to impress me.

Why not get a 16:9 4K and simply use a wide screen resolution with crop?

Why, on earth, would you spend the money and then throw away the vertical FOV that is highly desirable in a flight sim?

4K is extremely demanding. GTX 1080 benchmarks show that it can run new titles at 4K resolution in highest settings with 30-40 FPS. To get a good 4K performance two GTX 1080 and a SLI compatible title would be required and as we know DCS does not handle SLI too well.

When it comes for sim high horizontal FOV is extreamly helpfull. At the moment with a single monitor there is nothing better than a widescreen. 3440x1440 resolution horizontally is close to 2 FullHD monitors side by side while vertically it's sliglty more. If only budget allows I can recomend Acer x34 (or Asus PG348Q):

+ 34'', 3440x1440, G-SYNC, IPS, 100 Hz refresh

- price, big stand, Acer - shakes even on relativelly stable desk

You don't throw it away, you get the same field of view in vertical but just gain wider on horizontal, only drawback is that you throw away the resolution while doing so.

So do you want wider field of view (and same vertical one) with lower resolution, or just more resolution on vertical?

well I went to local shop and checked a 34" ultrawide (21:9) next to a 27" (16:9 2K);

they both have almost the same height but the 27" will give me more vertical FOV which I think will be advantage for sim.

34" it too wide and will be great option if you go for 4K but too expensive as you will get too more vertical FOV

I would say that monitors for photography, DTP etc.. are tailored towards different characteristics than gaming monitors. In result you would pay additionally for not so needed features like as best as possible color reproduction while miss some other esential - short responce time, limited ghosting, higher refresh rate, adaptive sync technology.

I guess the problem with my request is a "small" ultra wide means sacrificing height for width. I suppose a widescreen is what i'm looking for.

I spent a week searching and best I found that can meet your request is LG 25UM58-P (~$166 at amazon)

I have ended up with purchasing Acer H277HU; a true 2K. waiting it to be delivered and then will report how different DCS will be.

yes a 3440x1440 will be perfect but the hell expensive now and need at least GTX1080 to run it smoothly

Yes it is expensive.

No, you don't need 1080. With 1070 it runs just fine but I bet other cards can also manage it.

Thanks for recommendation. I've decided to pry the wallet open a little further and spend $250ish.

Based off your request I'm now considering LG 29ub55 ultrawide since I wouldn't lose much if anything vertically.

I had narrowed down my own search to ASUS vg248qe widescreen. From what I've read this gives you everything you want in gaming monitor except Gsync. (don't know how important that is) ASUS seems to have great color quality but perhaps as Firmek points out not as important for gaming.

The monitor you got looks pretty sweet rABSO. Looking forward to your review and opinion on going to 2k UW.
