RX480 and DCS: Crashing and Burning

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys, was crossed between acquiring a RX480 or a GTX 1060 just for the full glory of DCS and finally got my hands on a Gigabyte RX480 G1 Gaming 8GB.

I have been testing it out at full throttle since yesterday to utter disappointment the game just crashes with solid Pink colour on my monitors.

I have turned the compatibility mode ON in Wattman but to no avail. I have been keeping a record of power draw which is 150W Max and Voltage slightly above 1.000, I have done no overclocking what so ever and even the card is not so hot at 71C.

I turned down a settings a notch and still the game crashes as above.

I'm just curious if anyone else is facing the same issue because this is a major let down for me. Right now I'm failing to isolate the problem to the hardware or the drivers because I have done this by the book and Microsoft Flight Simulator: SE is running fine.

Please note that I'm able to start the game and fly and the game crashes anywhere between the 1min to 10min mark randomly, this is just to clarify because some people are not even able to start the game since the RX480.

Another observation is that DCS consumes GPU Load constant at 100% and at 150W at Ultra unlike other games, shouldn't the GPU be supposed to handle such loads?

NEED HELP!

Ok so new results: Reduced MSAA to 4x, Anso to 4x, Reduced Terrain draw and trees, turned off field of view so basically with these reduced settings the GPU core clock never exceeds 800MHz and the VDDC remains just below 1.000V.

Things are stable @60fps, this is basically the card operating at 62%. Anything beyond this results in crash i.e any consistant VDDC closer 1.1V. I have a Corsair VS650 PSU.

What is to blame here?

Maybe you could post your crash logs and your full system specs

Have you upgraded your GPU or bought a new PC? Then make sure correct Drivers are installed, especially when you had NVidia earlier

What you also could do is watch how much of your RAM is used

i3 6100, Corsair 8gb Vengence, Corsair VS 650 PSU, GB Z170 HD3 DDR4, Win 10 64-bit, 320gb 7200 rpm (with 3gb free space on the partition DCS is sitting on). I previously had a 750ti which would give lesser frames but would never freeze. Just added the above mentioned GPU.

Used DDU to cleanup previous drivers. UNable to upload dcs.log file.

Zip the logs file and then you should be able to upload the logs, otherwise wait for BIGNEWY, he has a guide for that

What settings are you playing on?

The next time you play, press RCtrl + pause twice to see how much RAM DCS is using, maybe this is your problem

Yes that is always ON! are you suggesting that system 8GB RAM is not enough? I obviously hit all settings At all settings ULTRA for starters with card drawing massive power and VDDC almost 1.2V.

Now stable at Reduced MSAA to 4x, Anso to 4x, Reduced Terrain draw and trees, turned off field of view so basically with these reduced settings the GPU core clock never exceeds 800MHz and the VDDC remains just below 1.000V.

Looking back at 1.2 version experiences, DCS doesn't work very well with AMD driver. I suspect this is driver related problem, particularly this RX 480 is quite new. If you just play DCS I'd swap the card to 1060. Otherwise, play with current setting that work for you and patiently wait for DCS 2.5.

Good luck

I've used AMD from day one simply because I use Eyefinity + 2 Lilliputs. Nvidia cards could not handle the 5th monitor unless same resolution.so I returned the 2 x GTX 1070 and purchased 2 x RX480. Drivers are no problem

and works great.

I have a single 1080p 60hz monitor, and at all settings Ultra the card was reaching temperatures above 80C within a few mins, and VDDC was closer to 1.2V and power draw was 150W constant, I think this high consistent power draw might be the problem. Do you have Gigabyte G1 ?

I have ASUS Maximus Mobo and Asus Radeon RX480 cards

It comes with Asus GPU Tweak software that lets you change the Fan speed.

I tested using only 1 card

Different tests I performed. Hope it helps smile.gif

Use the Asus GPU Tweak Software it should work on any card

as a rule of thumb, my DCS eats away 10GB RAM and about 12-12GB SWAP on BlueFlag, loading also takes a while and I wouldnt wanna do this with less RAM and no SSD. You are lost before you even hit the launch knob.

No problems with my older GTX 750ti and medium settings, just like absolutely no problems with the replaced RX480 for an Asus Dual GTX 1060 6gb OC.

I know I'm on the edge with ram and the HDD but it is no fault of those components that the Gigabyte RX480 G1 Gaming was a mess.

60fps Ultra all the time at cooler temperatures and much less power.

Had crash problems when switching to the RX480 too, for me a driver cleanup did the trick. Never had issues since, although i don't run the game at high or ultra settings. Prefer a higher fps so i'm at medium-high(ish) settings.

I did what OldE24 suggested, in my case it found 3 old drivers that were (aperently) causing issues.
