DCS on external hd?

Recommended Posts

Like title says is it possible or will it work if i place dcs on external hd?

Sorry if asked before but i just could not find it anywhere..

I have at the moment only 128gb but it is sdd..just it is too small.

I have now dcs installed with 3 module and nothing else on hdd but i am almost full.

I would exchange my current hdd(laptop) but on it is my licensed win 10 which i do not want to loose that is whay i am trying to figure it out will it work or no.

If someone knows about this issue, be kind and share it with me..

Thank you.

You could always clone your hdd to your new ssd, this way your OS will remain untouched. (see here, for example).

Did it year ago on my laptop, never had any problems with win license.

AFAIK you still will need to reactivate all your DCS modules after that.

I agree with Dami. As long as the base hardware is the same the license should remain valid.

Things to obey:

Some cloning tools that come with the SSD will not work if the partition to be cloned is larger in size than the new ssd has as capacity. You may shrink the original partition down to same or less and may have to shuffle "cold data" like movies, pics OFF that drive first.

DO NOT BOOT after cloning with both drives still attached---KILLS WINDOWS !!!!!!!

DEATTACH the "old" cloned drives.

Acronis Disk Director is my tool of choice but it doesnt come for free I have to admit, but that tool can steer around many problems that SSD-box included tools sometimes have.

The newest version of Samsungs clone tool is fine as well, but only works with Samsung SSDs.

Others I only had bad experience with and thus have gotten Acronis DD as a tool.

Either way & either tool, dont reboot with both drives attached, it will DESTROY one of your win copies by deleting its identifier willingly, its not a flaw but copy protection afaik.
