DCS and AMD?

Recommended Posts

I need a new motherboard and CPU so I was thinking of giving AMD a try to save a few bucks. How does DCS and AMD work together? Are there reports of lower frames or glitches when playing DCS on an AMD processor? I would still run on an nvidia GPU though.

Take a look at this very useful thread:

AMD is almost half the average fps of equivalent Intel processor, the money saved isnt worth it imho.

If you can wait and favour AMD, then check independent reviews of Ryzen ONCE RELEASED

or go for the fastest 4-core Intel you can afford today.

The best gamer chip might still be the i7-4790k in IPC and overclocking but it is "old" 4th gen by

now and many wont consider this a a valid choice for a new systems.

It is like car engines...downsizing has it's benefits in saving energy, what lacks is the brutal power.

At the end of the day, the 4790k will smoke my 6700k in any IPC based game but mine will slightly be faster anywhere else through new instruction sets and more powerful chipset.

Again, for gaming...I just tailored an i5-4thgen 3.4/3.8 stock speed for my buddy....GOD DAMN HE SMOKES MY 6700k IN ANY ANY ANY GAME when we both push the chips in OC to their limits, we both end at 4.5GHz stable and his is just a good portion faster at 4.5 !!!! tested side by side btw.

That is the truth

Going for AMD right now is a very bad idea. Their top end CPUs are built on a 5 year old architecture. Wait till next month. Intel will have released its new Kaby Lake line and AMD should release Ryzen (which appears to be a huge progress) by about that time also.

Asus Z-97k motherboard..around 100€

Intel i5 4670k or 4690k both around 250€ , actually the 3.5GHz 4690k is cheaper by 3 € than the 3.4GHz 4670k at my favourite place.

Both reach way beyond 4GHz with a good cooler, invest in a good cooler !!

Either go AIO WC and save lots of space or buy a monster Air cooler and struggle with space and RAM height that need to fit UNDER the cooler block..often causes big trouble.

If you buy a big air cooler, consider buying LOW-PROFILE RAM so it fits. there are actually no fast RAMs that come as Low Profile that deserves the name, some are sold as LP rams but are just as high as any other with coolers, I have 2 of those sets in front of me...and my 2400er DDR3 I wanna give to friend wont fit UNDER his DarkRockPro on the Z97k or any other z97 or z170 board.

Taking the coolers OFF is a bad idea as RAMs do get very very hot when primed and stressed, you shouldnt think they do get that hot but they do, tetsed myself many times and RAMs get so hot you dont wanna touch them in stressed scenarios.

hsve an airflow over them, espeacially with AIO wc you MUST take care of a fan that replaces the air stream usually caused by CPU air coolers...

Watercooling NEEDS air cooling to cool the board, even if you wc VRMs and all that...have air cooling for all the other mobo parts as well, especially RAM modules !!

just my tip as a system builder

* I have built a handful of systems based for gaming on that particular Asus board Z97-k on a budget, sone with 4790k i7's and some with the above mentioned i5's, to be honest..the i5 is the better deal if you are on a budget
