Dear oculus rift cv1 users. Is it really worth it!

To boot I don't need to wear my glasses when using the rift.

Same hear, I always had to wear reading glasses to read books, smaller print, etc. Had to wear them flying on my monitor cause I could not ready any of the instruments.

No problem seeing them in the Rift without the glasses at all.

Okay look at it this way, for me I have Dell 30" (2.6K) so to up grade I would need to go 4K display instead went with rift and yes you get resolution issues with menus etc but for actual game play think of it like Avatar 3D but your the actor playing in that environment. For me it's not the absolute resolution it's the your there visceral feel.

Worth it at nearly $AUD1000 hell yeah! It'is amazing what the human brain can add in the way of filling in the dots to make something immersive even more immersive. (I litirally had to land the Gazelle before well it would get ugly!)

The sound seems to mix well with head orientation so far very convincingly.

I find I need to relearn the perspective to get good landings and generally not break stuff but the experience does seem to improve as you play. Maybe I just need :helpsmilie: , YMMV.

Control is an illusion which usually shatters at the least expected moment.

Gazelle Mini-gun version is endorphins with rotors. See above.

I found it odd too. But it is true. Glasses on when i look to my monitor. glasses off when i wear the rift. :D

Hey guys,

I think I have read somewhere here in the forum, that some of you have the monitor running over the onboard graphics while the Rift is connected to the graphic card.

I posted my problem already here, but didn´t get some helpful reply:

https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=181560

Is it really not possible to run the monitor via onboard graphics while using the Rift?

Cheers, Monty

OH LA VACHE

That's what I said yesterday when I tested my CV1 specimen. It is priceless to discover how years of simulation play on flat screen has been misleading about the aircrafts' cockpits. Switches are a lot tinier, frontal instruments are bigger and lower, leg funnels are shorter, some displays are a lot bigger, wings are also impressive, general cockpit design is looking actually very challenging. But the most amazing were the shapes totally unnoticed until now, the ones perfectly aligned with the line of sight, like the MiG-29's display's sun guard, or all the cables and rods around the MiG-21's ASP. Ka-50's cockpit is huge and Mi-8's is wonderful.

The feeling of being in the cockpit highly compensates for the low resolution and high price.

The external views however are not very improved except when contemplating aircrafts on the ground at human height.

I'll buy :

МиГ-23МЛД & МЛА МиГ-27К МиГ-25 Mirage III F-4E any IJ plane 1950' Korea Dynamic campaign module

Gents,

after two weeks of flying with the Rift I entered a new dimension. I "bought myself" a BF109, being a German, a must have in my hangar. Bloody hell, that thing is a tricky beast, it took a whole day to get used to it.

After a few single missions and first attempts of air combat, I entered a multiplayer server last Sunday. Jesus - that was so much fun! Of course I have been shot down several times on Sunday, but yesterday I have shot down the first (three) Spits. The second kill I have made in "Top-Gun-Style", lowering gear and flaps to massively reduce airspeed letting the Spit overshoot myself and it just came up 30m in front of my guns which cut it´s right wing in half

Taking part in an air combat with the Rift - especially in multiplayer - is even more fun than I had already before. After the first kill I shouted out JAAAA, because it has been so tense. After being shot down and hanging on the parachute, the whole air battle has been around myself. Seeing and hearing a whistling P51 passing by only a couple of meters away, being chased by a roaring FW190 was awesome. I was sitting like 1st row in theatre and watching the air battle around me - it was thrilling! The Oculus earphones by the way are dam good, the sound quality is awesome...

Having a superior awareness in air combat, exactly knowing what´s going on around you, is such a big advantage compared two 2D. You look out for an opponent and you just can´t lose sight of him - I start getting compassion for the other ones...

Can´t wait to join the server back again this evening! What a great gift all of the VR-developers have made to us. I am very thankful...

Cheers,

Monty

Sorry for the offtopic but which server you have joined where there is some intense ww2 battle ? I used to fly (if I manage to takeoff) fw190 but dogfighting against AI is annoying and there was not many people in the servers so I gave up on it for some time.

Or might be there some more people now due to the spit release ? Have to check..

I will give you the sever name this evening, since I just can´t remember it now. But if you sort the multiplayer list to number of players online, I have found the server always close to the top, since like 30 players where online the last two days (at least in the evening). So lot´s of folks out there...

Hi rift users, few questions:

Do you think my machine can handle the rift and what graphics settings should use for it? Is it possible someone to post pictures to see how instruments looks through rift and how VR zoom works?

I tried DCS with cardboard (Z4 mini, LG G4), but I wasn't very impressed. May be because, distance between lenses was at maximum, but still not comfortable for my eyes.

I still hesitate to jump into the VR world.

Yeah its worth it, though I bought mine before having a child so am going to need the prices of VR to drop in the future as I cant afford these prices forever!

When I look at and imagine flying on a monitor now it just seems as if my FOV has been zoomed out so far that I can no longer see anything properly.

And honestly people talk about poor resolution but these things begin to pale in comparison to new flaws and limitations you begin to realize non VR monitor flying/gaming has. Sure the graphics look sharper with a higher resolution on a monitor, but it all seems so far away and disconected from me the pilot!

I have two and last year invested in TM, MFG and GTX1070. Now I feel greedy looking at the Rift.

A few years ago I bought battle of Stalingrad an realized huh I need a joystick? Now I have the warthog, rudder pedals, track Ir and a VR headset, not to metion the many games and modules. Very expensive hobby is flight simming!

Is it worth it ?

I have had mine just a few days now and my knee jerk reaction is "yes its worth it", I'm still phaffing around with the rift set up and have not quite got it 100% to my satisfaction but in general yes.

After about 3+ hours Flying this is what I think so far

Pros: In and out Cockpit reality realisation is light years better than a flat screen ( being in a cockpit and looking out as well as in)

Pros: Height judgement is now a visual reality

Pros: General DCS World spatial awareness is far better

Pros: To sum up every thing is better for the flyer in 3D (minus some loss of definition & sharpness)

** I am now more aware of the Hard work that both DCS and all 3rd party developers put into this amazing Sim***

( All Cons ( apart from the first one) could be and are I guess due to my PC's limitations at present)

Cons: "Rift neck " (a condition closely associated with ww2 pilots " Weavers neck" ) will I hope go as I put more hours in :)

Cons: Cockpit instrumentation glass is to me a bit "Meh"

Cons: As many have pointed out its not as sharp as a High price monitor

Cons: To Sum up there are limitation's at the moment with the rifts pixels being not as sharp as a really good monitor.

plus the price of the rift is quite high,

But for me who spends a bazzilion hours doing this its worth it!.

Nah not a problem I ride motor bike so neck muscles used to that, but hell yeah don't you just look around a lot just because you can.

Yea I agree, also little things I was used to before now seem amazing, Taxing behind a Viggen and M2000 last night Wow!, the height off the runway in the Viggen, flying through the valleys just amazing, the SU 25 ? what a size!, and the cockpit!, the list just keeps getting longer.

Yes I also have to agree with your other observation about just how much work DCS and developers have put in to enable VR, it really is a game changer for me. :pilotfly:

"Rift Hair"

So what's everyone doing to prevent that nasty crease down the middle of your head? After a few hours I look like I've got a bad 70s part down the middle of my head, and my wife is threatening to paint it white while I'm sleeping (its' already turning gray)... LOL

What to do?

First world problems, ... I know, I know.
