1070, i7 4790K, or SSD?

Recommended Posts

I have built myself several rigs so far, but to be honest not really an expert in balancing it out regarding bottlenecks etc.

Right now i have an I5 4670, GTX970 and 20GB ram. No SSD.

Now i am thinking about upgrading my rig a little.

My options:

replacing i5 4670 with i7 4790K (top model from last generation, 4,4GhZ)

replacing my 970 with a 1070 or 980 Ti (1080 too expensive)

adding a 500GB SSD to my rig

Now what do the experts here think will help the in-game performance (FPS, stutters) the most?

I don't care about a minute loadingscreen or so, which could surely be solved by a SSD.

Sheer in-game performance is really the only thing to interest me. I am playing in 1080p (for now). Want to build it also in foresight of Normandy and Oculus Rift (want my Rig to run VR fluently once every part is upgraded)

Obviously doing all 3 would be the best, but hard for my current financial situation. So i'd rather do it bit by bit, starting with the part to up the performance the most :)

Thanks for your answers

the 970 is still a force to be reckoned with. The I5 is decent, and RAM is pleantiful. The clear weak link is the mechanical hard drive, so:

SSD

Not only solves load times (that doesnt interest you), it solves stuttering and wait times during gameplay (that should interest you).

If your performance is good on Nevada you can lean back for now. The bad performance on caucasus will change soon for the most rigs.

Take the SSD.

SSD all the way. See how you find that first. What resolution are you gaming at? If 1080p at fixed 60hz monitor then stay with 970. If at 1440p or high refresh monitor then a new GPU may benefit.

But best bet is try SSD first. It really does help just in general system responsiveness with operating system. And for m it did help to remove some micro stutters in DCS.

Keep in mind that DCS reads and loads up map objects and textures into RAM and VRAM all the time, especially while zooming. This will cause some annoying stuttering, so SSD is not only beneficial for DCS startup and initial mission loading process, but also for actual gameplay as well. I learned it the hard way, but I'm happy SSD user nowadays :D.

I have a similar system but trying to run 3 monitors....

AMD FX 8350 4 GHz

32 GB RAM

NVidia 970

mechanical hdd

DCS runs beautifully on 1 monitor at 1080P at max settings; when I use NVidia surround, frame rate plummets ...

new CPU, GPU or SSD?

this is actually by far the biggest problem i have. When just flying around zoomed out i mostly have very good FPS, more then 100. But as soon as i start zooming - which i am doing a lot, with my rather small 1080p screen - the stutters begin. Very Very annoying. Let's see if the SSD will solve it, i hope so :)

So how does this work then? I just install the hardware hungry games on my SSD, and leave the rest (e.g. system, steam) on my HDD?

Buy the biggest SSD you can afford. Trust me, I have 3, and wish mine were bigger! The NTTR map was 33Gb alone. :O

Everyone else has given you good advice already, but just for comfort, I also have a GTX 970 running @ 1080p, with a i5 3750k o/c'ed to 4.2Ghz, 16GB RAM, and I'd also strongly recommend you get an SSD. Your CPU and GFX card is fine.

1070, i7 4790K, or SSD?

When I first moved to SSD over a few years ago I purchased what I could afford which was a Samsung 830 250GB sata SSD. I used it as my OS drive for windows and also for what I considered my essential programs and games. I transitioned my 1TB mechanical Samsung drive and turned it into a storage drive for photos and music.

Now I have in addition to my Samsung 830 another 480GB SSD which I use as a Steam drive for other games and my ITunes media. DCS of course has always been on my SSD. The SSD has been one of the most significant developments in the PC arena in the last decade. Any SSD makes a huge jump over a mechanical drive and every effort should be made to set aside some cash for one.

I rather have 3 or 4 250GB ssd vs 1 big one.

If the big one fails you loose it all in a splitt second. Ssd dies rather unexpected and usually zero warning.

OS - 1ssd

Games- 1 ssd

Music video etc - large HDD

My advice
