Complete new system

Recommended Posts

Dear all,

after being involved into sims for a very long time, I did quit playing sims in 2009 due to a lot of work, marriage, kids etc.

Last year I started to return to DCS, being overwhelmed from the development of the past years. Since my wife has been shocked by the size of my former PC (big tower), I decided to go for a gaming laptop. I bought an ASUS Asus ROG G752VY-GC084T / Intel Core i7-6700HQ / 16GB RAM / GTX980M Laptop which works very well for DCS (having TrackIR4 and Hotas Warthog).

For several month I have studied the development of VR and since the next generation of VR-glasses will take some time, I am willing to invest into an Oculus Rift by now.

My Laptop runs fine, but with my current setup the frame rate can drop from 75 down to 30/40 entering a hard-fought battlefield.

Therefore I think, my Laptop cannot provide enough performance on the high (detail) level I would like to play with the Oculus.

I am now looking for a complete new desktop system as a replacement for my laptop. Since my lovely wife is still around, it should be a mini desktop (with a white glitter case :D )

Being “out of business” for a long time, this is my first approach after some research :helpsmilie::

Case: Thermaltake Core V1 Snow Edition (unfortunately without glitter)

Board: Asus Maximus VIII Impact Gaming Z170 (is that “too much”?)

CPU: I7-6700K (since DCS need a lot of CPU, should I go for the 7700K?)

GPU: Asus GeForce GTX 1070 Dual OC (or should I run for a 1080? With the tight system, I think lower energy consumption helps in terms of temperature)

Cooling: be quiet! Dark Rock TF

RAM: Corsair DIMM 16GB DDR4-3000 Kit

SSD: ADATA Premier Pro SP900 2,5’’ SSD 256 GB

HD: Toshiba DT01ACA200 2 TB

Power-Supply: Enermax Platimax 80 Plus (600W) – (or should I go for the 750W, cause Oculus Rift needs additions power?)

I would very much appreciate it, if you pros have a look on the configuration and giving me feedback, if everything is fine – especially in terms of running an Oculus Rift.

Many thanks in advance!

MadMonty

Looks good to me, it is pretty much exactly what I would get if I was in market for a new pc. I do think the motherboard is a bit ott, but if you can afford it it will be a great overclocker. I am not into VR yet so maybe someone else with experience can advise if the upgrade to a 1080 is necessary and/or worth the extra cash.

Looks good to me as well.

You should be fine with the 6700K, it will overclock nicely for you.

GPU - a 1080 might give you a little more oomph, whether that is worth the expense of the price difference might be another thing. I am sure the 1070 would do well for you.

RAM - 16 gb will be fine for now, however as DCS continues to grow I am sure 32gb will become more of the norm. Whether that is a year down the road or how long who knows. If I were building a new system today I would probably go for 32gb if I could swing it.

SSD - same thoughts as ram, I have my games ( mostly DCS) on a dedicated 256gb Samsung Pro SSD, and I know here before too much longer I will need more space. If I were building a system now I would try to get a 512gb SSD to be safe. I am not familiar with the SSD you mentioned, I can tell you I have had these two Samsung Pro's for just over 3 years now and they run great for me. I have one for my program files and windows, and the other dedicated for my games.

Power Supply - I am sure it will be fine, I am though of the mind more is always better to be safe. Heck I have a 1000W supply myself LOL.

Also I have a Rift on the way to me scheduled to be delivered later today, looking forward to seeing how my system handles it...

Good luck in your new build, they are always exciting!

Hi I have been doing some research into a new system for myself. I will be using the old case PSU and GPU along with my WC loop. This is the bundle I have found that gives performance over the premium I would pay for the latest released kit.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01FUKA9NC/ref=olp_product_details?_encoding=UTF8&me=

I need to see whether I can pick up a bundle without cooling solution though

The 7700k is about 40€ cheaper than the 6700k and the better chip.

I would not buy Z170 and 6700k as of now as you get better performance out of the box for the same money with Z270/7700k combo.

It also sports a few more PCIe lanes and some other extras you might find usefull later on.

I am returning all my stuff for RMA and try to make the switch to Z270/7700k as well, would even cause a payback into my pocket:)

After some further research, I tweaked the system a little bit...

Case: Thermaltake Core V1 Snow Edition

Board: ASUS Z170I PRO GAMING

CPU: I7-6700K

GPU: GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1070 G1 Gaming

Cooling: Noctua NH-D15

RAM: Corsair DIMM 32GB DDR4-3000 Kit

SSD1: ADATA Premier Pro SP900 2,5" SSD 128 GB for Windows

SSD2: Samsung MZ-75E500B 500 GB for DCS

HD: Seagate ST2000DM001 2 TB

Power-Supply: Enermax Platimax 80 Plus (750W) - to be safe

The GPU is a bit better, also the CPU-cooling. Upgrade to 32GB as proposed by dburne. Downgrade on mainboard. Two SSD´s to run DCS on SSD.

Still appreciating any ideas for improvement.

Cheers,

MadMonty

I just found out, that a Z720 + 7700k system is a bit more expensive than the Z710 + 6700K, but only a few couple of bugs. I also read, that the architecture of 7700k is similar to 6700k, but the overclocking ability of 7700k is much better.

So an alternative could be 7700k + MSI Z270I GAMING PRO CARBON

I just wonder, that MSI specifies 2 x 3.1 USB outputs on the front, while the Thermatake case has 2 x 3.0 USB connectors. Will I run into problems here?

Get the I5 7600K (4.2Ghz)... Why they always want to spend ($120+) money on useless techno stuff?

Why a cheap SSD1 for Windows?

Don't forget, bigger is the SSD capacity, better he is.

The best is; one SSD for the Windows, and the games in another SSD.

RAM compatibility with the big Noctua? Or get a water cooler (better and noisier)

The Enermax is a tier 2: http://www.thetechgame.com/Archives/t=5613293/power-supply-guide-the-good-and-the-bad.html

But i always suggest a Seasonic (the best).

A Daemon said,

when you take a BIG cooler you WILL HAVE problems with the RAM height !

I have the same DDR4 Corsair 3000MHz XMP 15-17-17-35 32GB kit that you have in your list if I am right. I doubt that they fit under that cooler, they are LP , but LP for once with cooler. A real LP RAM is WAY lower in height.

Don't misunderstand their interpretation of LPX for overclocked gaming PC's.

Make clear that when you buy a DH14/15, DRpro3 or similar that your ram is REALLY a LP version, LOW PROFILE.

I have seen many "complications" there with friends' PCs that had to return the RAM or had to buy what fitted and not what they liked to have for RAM.

A Watercooler has other complications but does not occupy that much space above and around your CPU.

Usually Slot 2 is still blocked by the lower fins of the cooler and thus you cant do the standard recommended 2+4 slot config for 2 modules.

Using slots 3+4 for 2 modules is BAD for latency diffs and dual channel

is voided as well..its a No-Go. The DarkRock Pro3 on my pal's Z97K blocks any taller RAM till slot 4. I would have given him my old DDR3-2400 for free cause he fixes my old car everytime but they wouldnt fit and hes not ready to go WC yet, so he wished he had done so 1st place now. I told him day 1 but he saw no need and only trouble. Now he thinks OC might be a tick better ( tho I think both is same level after heating up 30 min tbh ) with AIO

and he could have the RAM he wanted.

He also doesnt dare to move the tower around much cause a roundabout 750gr heavy cooler with a 16cm lever force pries on the board.

They have their advantages, I use Noctua too, for Server or Workstation machines, DH10 I think it is, but it is much smaller ( its not for oc tho ) and doesnt block RAM slots in any way.

Thanks BitMaster for your detailed and very useful comments. The Corsair RAM is the LPX-series and therefore should meet the requirements of low profile. Since I switched to water cooling, I should not run into any problems now - hopefully...

The motherboard has only two RAM-slots, therefore I wont have to decide which I will use :D

Monty, wait a few weeks for AMD new Ryzen CPU's and vega GPU's.

You will likely be able to get better deals then.

Even Intel I5 CPU's have been slowly dragged to premium territory due to lack of competition until now. For what I have been hearing youll be able to get an I7 equivalent on AMD's side for 200$ or less.

I know what they say about waiting in the PC world, but this time is worth it. There will be a chance we can get more hardware under the hood for the money. I can think of a better GPU then.

OK gentlemen - as promised I post some pics of my new tiny beauty...

Since I haven´t set up a new pc for almost 10 years, I luckily remembered a lot from earlier days. But the very small Thermatake V1 case has been a real challengen in terms of getting everything installed.

But it work out... The H90 WC runs in a Push-Pull-config with two additional fans on the backside to help getting the warm air outside the case. Watercooling runs fine, CPU @4.8 Mhz comes up to 67° under stress test.

I used CPU-Z as a stress test.

Using Prime95 max heat I come up to 70/71° - should be ok, or?
