A little ram help please

I'm thinking of getting Asus Strix Z270F gaming MB, & I7 7700K CPU. It shows a whole list of memory.. DDR4 3866(OC)/ 3733(OC)/ 3600(OC)/ 3466(OC)/ 3400(OC)/ 3333(OC)/ 3300(OC)/ 3200(OC)/ 3000(OC)/ 2800(OC)/ 2666(OC)/ 2400(OC)/ 2133. I guess all those numbers are over clocked. I'm not a builder like some of you, so ram is a little confusing for me. Can someone please recommend a fast type of DDR4, & even a good manufacturer that I can use with this MB? Thank you

I have had no problem with Corsair. Always been reliable for me.

Yes, those speeds mentioned by Asus refer to the overclocked speeds that the motherboard supports.

Given you are going for the top of the range 7700k I would suggest looking at 3000Mhz or 3200Mhz speeds. Capacity wise 16GB (2x8) or if money isn't a major deal then why not go for 32GB. Some games may benefit slightly from higher memory speeds while others not.

My understanding of Kaby and previous Skylake is that memory timings are not as important as the actual memory speeds. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong on this.

If you go to the support page for this motherboard on the Asus website you will be able to download a memory qualified vendors list (QVL) sheet which lists all the memory brands and specific models that will work with the Asus Strix Z270F motherboard.

Then of course now with memory there are the aesthetics along with practicalities. You might like a certain colour or LED and some now are being released with RGB LED. Or you may be looking for "low profile" memory so that it does not get in the way of your CPU cooler.

Use the QVL from Asus download site and choose one listed.

The sweetspot for 6+7gen i7 is around 3600MHZ, but those are very high price.

I settled with a Corsair kit that was for sale for 200€/32GB 3000MHz

and it ran nice.

Make sure they have XMP support. Most have that, but not all work flawless in all boards.

Use the qvl

Thanks guys, your comments much appreciated. I did look at (QVL) sheet for one company, but Z270F not listed, too new I guess.

A little ram help please

You need to check asus support website for that product.

Its way harder to go to corsair and see if a certain ram is compatible with your board.

I will check when at home and post the link ;)

Its easy. The I7's internal controller officially support up to 2400Ghz DDR4 dual channel. The other speeds can be selected in BIOS after buying RAMs rated at those speeds. Thats what (OC) means, and you dont necessarily have to overclock the RAM istelf.

The choice then comes to price. Most lower tier speeds are priced close to each other until a certain level and thats the sweetspot you should lookout for.

Depending on the country and avaiability where you are, as you go up in speed there will be one with a bigger price jump from the previous, and thats where you should stop and buy. It'll probably be 2800 or 3000 RAM, maybe even 3200Mhz. Going 3600Mhz and above offers rapidly diminishing benifits for much higher prices.

Timings should be 15-15-15-32 (or -34) ideally, or less (tends to increase the higher the MHz go). Do not take higher than 16-16-16-35.

Thanks Demon, that list was a little hard to read especially for corsair. I found a list for the MB on corsair site. Below looks like it should work...I hope:unsure:
