Anyone upgrade from 27" to 34" monitor?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has upgraded from a 27" (Acer XB271HU, gsync) to a 34" (thinking of an X34).

I'm really happy with DCS performance with my current rig, but I've got a tax return about to burn a hole in my pocket and was wondering if the 34" curved monitors were a worthy upgrade. I think my current rig can drive it ok, but not sure.

Intel i7 4790k

980ti

SSD

16GB ram

Win7

Any input greatly appreciated!

I'm in the same boat. Ive had my 34 lg since they came out a couple years ago. I love it , but i just got an oculus. i cant go back to flying the same way after using it. Its not perfect but man what an experience. I would say get the rift if you want to be in another world. If you're looking to get dual use you wont go wrong with an ultra wide. Your rig is fine, I'm running a 4770k @4.4 with a 1070.

Recently wanted to do a display upgrade for DCS pit build (currently have Dell 30 for photo use as well) but as 4K would be an upgrade that made the rift the cheaper and now that I've had the rift for 2 days, for me it's by far the better option. I (attempt) to fly Huey and Gazelle and the rift makes that a much better immersive experience. Although it will depend on what else you do with the PC.

If you simply look at it on paper with about 1K horizontal resolution (by 2) it will put you off, but what you have to understand is that when you bank hard right at 60Kts @ 100ft in a Huey and look right your staring at the ground whizzing past beneath you in a realistic 3d representation. Level out bank hard left and look to your left and there is that ground whizzing past beneath you again.

All that and the vision presented seems seamless as it tracks your head movement. Now a 4K screen might be better for it's raw detail but not for immersion.

Warning: When I first tried the above in the Gazelle I had to stop and land after about 10mins or it was not going to end well. :music_whistling:

But all good now. :pilotfly:

DCS 2.0.x

X99 i7 5930K, 32Gb DDR4 Intel 750 400GB SSD, Nvidia 980ti and now rift.

YMMV but your PC will run it just fine.

Control is an illusion which usually shatters at the least expected moment.

Gazelle Mini-gun version is endorphins with rotors. See above.

Currently rolling with a Asus Z390 Prime, 9600K, 32GB RAM, SSD, 2080Ti and Windows 10Pro, Rift CV1. bu0836x and Scratch Built Pedals, Collective and Cyclic.

I have the X34 and I'm very happy with it. I've had it for just on 12 months with no problems.

I have very similar specs to you (only difference is with a slightly older CPU - I7 3770K). My rig runs it just fine. No difference since moving from W7 to W10.

If your PC can push the pixels , then 34 Ultra wide 3440x1440 would be amazing for DCS

I recently made the move from 27" 1920x1080 to 34" 3440x1440, after briefly debating triple monitors but deciding against it. My specs are in sig but DCS runs fine, with 60+ fps in World 2.0.

One thing I would say is at that size don't be tempted by the lower res screens, you'll notice pixels (which you may also have done on your 27" screen, if it was only full HD; I know I did!). Very pleased with the Ultrawide.

I have a 32 inch 1440p and I am very satisfied with how my 3820 i7 and RX 480 are performing.

I do not have 32 inch for gaming, I was not satisfied with the low desktop area on a 27" at 1080p anymore for a year, I struggled with my daily stuff, finally had a chance to change it late last year.

I made the jump from 27" to 34" when they first came out and never regretted it at all. For flight and racing sims, as well as general computing, the 34 ultrawide is a clear step up. Mine is the slightly lower res version (which means better framerates for slightly less image quality compared to the 3440x1440), which has about the same dot pitch as my 27" 1080p Iiyama before it. I have a rift and that is great for immersion, but when you just want to quickly launch a sim and fly or drive, I still use my monitor a lot as the overall image is beautiful.

I would not give up Gsync to make the switch. The only reason I don't have a Gsync monitor on my sim rig is because I went 4k.

What do you think about a 32 inches monitor at 1920x1080? Will I see contacts in the ground better? Or I should go for a 32/34 inches at 2560x1440 or better?

I currently have a 23 inches monitor at 1920x1080 and it's difficult to see contacts and read some gauges like Mi-8 ones.

Thanks.

It might fix the problem with low visibility but will come with a price. That screen will be plain ugly too look at I guess. The pixels will be "THAT" large and square !

I am not sure if you know what I mean but please look at such a thing before you buy one would be my best advice.

I use a 27" at 1440p and I can read all gauges in the Mi-8 just fine, as a guideline.

4k is nice, but I personally like fps over pixels. When I can push 4k at the same 70-170fps as I can now I am for 4k, gsynced :P

Yes, 32" is too big for 1080 lines. Even for a 27".

I use 3 Asus VN279QL in portrait mode, the bezels are annoying.

Take your time.

I'm using 3 27" 1080p monitors at moment and I love the setup, but I just ordered a 34" ultrawide curved 3440x1440 to replace them. It's time for something a little more practical. I briefly tried a 29" 2560x1080 monitor a couple years ago and it's size and resolution left me wanting more, this should do the trick.

Thanks for your answers. I was looking for a more suitable monitor in Amazon, and found this one:

https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Monitor-Bdm4350uc-42-5in-3840x2160/dp/B01CO2QT4M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1489522338&sr=8-1&keywords=Philips+BDM4350UC%2F00

It is a 43 inches - 4k monitor. I suppose it will scale very well to 1920x1080 if needed, as it is exactly 4x a 1920x1080, or maybe I could run DCS at 4k with my 1070.

Hey thanks for the feedback everyone, finally ordered a PG348Q today from Amazon, should get here tomorrow!

Anyone want to buy a used XB271HU? I'll let it go for cheap + shipping, perfect condition but for a small 1/4" scratch in the lower left part of the screen.

You'll love Gsync :smilewink:

Great choice. I was considering PG348Q but got Acer X34 instead, mostly due to ascethics and more stable stand. Other then that both are generally the same quality panels. You'll love it! It's a beast! Apart of the size the first most positive impression was the crystal clear image. Make sure to connect it with display port cable, set the max refresh rate and enable the g-sync.

Yeap, it's really one of those things that you don't appreciate if you don't try it. After using g-sync monitor there is no going back. I had drivers auto-update screwing g-sync - I've noticed that something is wrong just imediatelly, the screen tearing was ruining the whole impression.

It's sitting in the box at home now! I got the PG348Q based on overall reviews, also AMZN had it on prime for easy return/replacement if needed. I'll be mounting on a vesa arm, I'll post a pic later once I get it all setup.

G-sync is indeed the sh*t.
