Having problems with a Frigate and the viggen

I'm testing the new viggen with an actual ship attack. But different than in the training mission I'm trying to hit a Frigate, the neustrashim.

First, both my missiles are destroyed before they can actually reach the ship.

Second, I can't get my wing man to actually attack the ship. He is just ignoring "Engage ships".

Tried several times without success.

Are wing man communication not working in the pre-release. I do not remember reading that.

Any tips of how to actually approach this? I thought that with 1 - 3 wing men, it should be possible. But having only 2 missiles is not enough.

 

I also noticed, that the ship training mission is using "Start enroute task" -> "Anti-Ship", but I was not able to select a similar enroute task in my mission. I copied this mission from an older mission. Can this happen because the mission was created in an older version of DCS?

are you on the same channel as your wingman?

 

killing big ships can be problematic with 2/4 missile due to the size, they can take a lot of damage and due to their missile defense system.

 

wingman comms are working, you just need to be on the same channel as him.

Ups..., I will check that. I rechecked. I easy communication turned on. Shouldn't that enable me to talk with anybody without having to know the frequency? Works in A-10C. Does easy communication need to be supported by the module?

 

I flew the mission again and could see in takview that both missiles actually hit the Neustrashim, but she did not seam to have a scratch on her at mission end.

"There are Rb04 and Rb15 versions for AI planes but they where only now discovered to not work and might crash your game. The versions for human players doesn't work properly for AI."

 

Thanks Deadpoetic6, missed that. But I also have not used the radio correctly. Still need to tackle how to use it in easy communication mode.

Same here. I guess the missiles don't cause enough damage to sink it. Even weirder: The frigates CIWS did hit one of the RB04s multiple times without destroying it. :huh:

It seems the easy comms don't work with Viggen. But what's the fun of using easy comms anyway? :D

Has anyone had success in the Moscow mission?

 

Pretty much as soon as I'm over water the ship launches its SAM's and I can never manage to fix the radar and get the weapons off without being destroyed.

 

Anyone got any tips for a successful attack?

You must fly low. You can get plenty close enough to launch before the Moscow fires on you. I did this by flying at <10m above the water.

 

My missiles missed the ship though.

I haven't tried that mission (I wasn't even aware that there is such a mission), but I have practised attacks against the Pyotr Veliki which is equipped with a navalised S300 SAM. I think the Moscow has the same SAM system?

 

Initially I had no chance to even get in range for the RB04s (~30km), even when flying at 10m ASL. Then I tried to use the jammer pod, and this really did the trick. The jammer started jamming the ships radar as soon as it picked it up and that made it possible for me to get in weapon range and fire my RB04. I could get as close then 25km without even getting fired at. The problem here is, that the Jammer only works in a 60° arc to the front and as soon as I turned away from the ship it fired two missiles at me which shot me down. So the jammer really makes a difference.

Good to know. :thumbup:

 

I guess the proper tactics would be to have a few jamming planes safe behind the strike package, constantly jamming the radar until the strikers are clear.

 

Not sure if this would work in DCS...

That was the hint I needed. Without easy communications I finally can talk to my wingman.

Activate the reverse instead of turning around, that would prevent the ships shooting at you.

How do you jam and use the rbo4? Its on the same hard point?

You have to sacrifice one RB04 for the pod, leaving you with only one RB04 to fire away. That is another reason why at least a second Viggen would be great to fly as ECM escort behind the attack Viggen. But as grunf already mentioned, it's not clear if DCS allows for this type of jamming or if DCS handles jamming on a one-to-one basis.

Just staying low seems to help. For some reason (with and without jamming), the SAM's will explode in mid air on the way towards me, is that what they do if they lose contact or some kind of bug?

 

Either way, its only when this happened I was able to sneak in and get a launch and then escape very very quickly.

Hmm, interesting. The SAM shouldn't even be launched in the first place, if they can't get a lock onto you. Did you change your altitude during your attack run?

 

When you tried jamming, can you confirm that the KB pod was actually emmiting (MOTVERK indication light on the warning panel lights up or flashes)?

Yes it was emitting, think I was using setting A-K on the U22/A.

 

I don't know if this is the correct setting though.

 

And yes I kept my altitude very low, around 50m or below.

A-K is not emitting ;)

To emmit it needs to be B-[F-K]. See attached table.

Ok, the manual confused me

 

U22 ECM pod

 

Settings U22

 

OFF: mode 0

 

Automatic: mode A

 

Standby (pre-heat): mode B

Mode A/H: High sensitivity.

 

» Mode A/J: High sensitivity.

» Mode A/K: Automatic sensitivity cycling between mode A/G and A/J.

 

• Active jamming modes B/F- E/K

 

Pods will automatically emit when illuminated by a radar from the frontal aspect.

I will try B-[F-K] though I don't understand how you can have 3 settings with only 2 dials??

B-F

B-G

B-H

B-J

B-K

 

And I forgot: D and E instead of B also work. So I should have said: [b,D,E] - [F-K]. Please take a look at the picture I attached in my previous comment. It will make it more clear.

You were in silent recording mode where no jamming signals are emitted ;)

Ok I got you, but what I dont get is that the manual also states B as a warmup mode and A as automatic? Either way it confused the hell out of me, but now I know and will test later tonight :thumbup:

I checked the manual again and I think I know what is confusing here. We're talking about different pods. :D

 

You were talking about the U22 pod which has just 2 modes:

A: automatic

B: preheat/stand by

 

I was talking about the U22/A pod, which has much more modes (e.g. silent recording) and they are configured as I explained above ;)
