AG-51_Razor
I need some help with refueling in the Mirage! Specifically the airspeed of the tanker. I am using the IL-78 and setting the speed to 300 kts at 20,000 feet. What I see happening is the tanker speeding up quite a bit after I have called "ready pre-contact". I even put an AI F/A-18 along side of me with instructions to refuel. After the lights came on and the hose and basket were reeled out, I requested to rejoin for refueling. I then pulled up into position behind the RH fueling pod and waited for the Hornet to plug in. After he was taking fuel, I announced that I was "ready pre-contact" and watched as the tanker immediately began accelerating and pulled the basket off the Hornet. Am I doing something with the speed setting for the tanker?? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
myHelljumper
Set the tanker speed to 430kt, that way it will stay at the same speed when you ask for pre-contact. AG-51_Razor
That worked like a charm myHelijumper. Thanks very much! Now all I have to do is learn to settle down and plug into the basket! :joystick: [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
myHelljumper
Yeah, the harder is the PIO (pilot induced oscillations). Put your FBW mode in Charge so the aircraft is less twitchy. The best advice I can give you is to have a bit more speed than the tanker when you want to connect, this way you are less prone to oscillations. jojo
Indeed it's 300kt IAS, and mission editor is TAS. So you have to convert IAS to TAS depending on your altitude. Mirage fanatic ! Gunnergolly
After about ten hours of practice i can finally refuel the 2000C consistently, something has just clicked :). I'm now much more relaxed on the stick which i think is the key to success as before i was gripping the stick to tightly, overcontrolling and inducing lot's of PIO. Just had a go refueling the A-10C which i haven't flown in ages and hooked straight onto the KC-135's boom no bother. Out of the two systems i think i prefer the boom to the basket, just seems easier to me, anyway still more practice required. =OPS=Slider
It is easier because boom operator in KC-135 is dumb since Lock On and nothing's changed since then. I can refuel M2K or Su-33 with no problem, and I'm 100% sure I can do this easily in F/A-18 and F-14, but until the ED fix the problem with boom operator or maybe give him a bit more intelligence, this should become easier to do.
