1080Ti vs 1080 for VR.

Recommended Posts

Greetings !

Assuming my computer specs (see below), is it worth to upgrade from a 1080 to the just announced 1080Ti for improving VR in DCS. Currently I run a smooth sim with pixel density at 2.0 with moderate graphics settings.

What is your take on that?

Best

Definitly a great card and will get one as soon as it launches in Switzerland (EVGA and Waterblock). My 980 TI won't give me that much back. At least the TI is pretty cheap.

Will we see much benefit with VR? I don't think so. Isn't this game mostly bottlenecked by CPU rather than the GPU? But we will definitly find out soon enough. :)

I think that 35% performance gain to a 1080 is just marketing-talk. I would wait for reviews.

Specifically reviews for the VR performance, which differs greatly from traditional 2D gaming performance gains.

And price will matter. They announced for 700 US $ without tax. But in reality in Europe for the custom cards there will be a much higher price tag. When the 1080 came out prices were much mucg higher than the announcement. Taking half a year to settle to something close than the announcement price. I would speculate for soemething closer to 900€ - 950€ for the custom cards in Europe including tax.

I will keep my 1080 and wait and see how the 1080TI will be reviewed and wait for the initial price to drop.

As it is now, the 1080 with a decent CPU and RAM can handle every VR game very fine.

At least they aren't charging more for their "Fouders"-Line.

I hope for a 899 CHF price tag in Switzerland, when the first EVGA/ASUS etc is released.

But compared to the Titan X(P), still a bargain :P

The GTX 980 was about 500-600CHF, the 980 Ti about 800-900CHF below the Titan X with 1000CHF. So it wouldn't be a wonder to see the same on the 1080 Ti.

1080 is about 700-800CHF so you can really expect something like 1000-1100CHF, which is still below the new Titan X with 1200CHF.

NVidia states a price difference about 200$, so we can exepect a price difference in switzerland about 300 CHF. 899CHF is not going to happen.

This is a no brainer for me and I'll be getting the 1080TI as soon as I can. I always got the top TI of the class and it normally sees me through 2 years no worries until the next gen comes out. VR is only going to get more hungry on GPUs so I'd future proof at the earliest opportunity. If you've already go a 1080 then I can see why you'd not upgrade but IMHO - do it once and then stick to TIs you'll not regret it. My 980TI is still going strong.

While it is tempting for me, I think I am just going to hold on to my EVGA 1080 FTW till the next gen. It is running very well for me and I should be ok till then.

I will definitely be upgrading my SLI 980s to a single 1080TI... finally saying goodbye to SLI forever.

I did that, one a half year ago. No regrets at all. :D

Thanks guys.

Indeed the +35% increase must be nvidia marketing talk i.e. under ideal conditions with highly optimised GPU code and nvidia friendly benchmarks.

I'll guess I'll wait for more reviews and real life tests.

Cheers

I'll be selling my 980ti and getting a 1080ti as soon as they are available. I've been saving for it for a long while. I'd prefer to get a hybrid but not if they're going to be months away. How soon after release day should we start to see offerings from evga?

No idea if it's true, but saw this: "GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics cards, including the NVIDIA Founders Edition, will be available worldwide — across 238 countries and territories — from NVIDIA GeForce partners, including ASUS, EVGA, Gainward, Galaxy, Gigabyte, iGame, Innovision 3D, MSI, Palit, PNY and Zotac, starting March 10th at 10am."

A beastly graphics card seems to barely help this game. I upgraded from a 970 to a 1080 and am seeing almost the same frame rates. I guess I'm CPU bottlenecked as I only have a 3770k at 4.5ghz.

Seems a little odd. I went from a 970 to a 1080 and saw a large performance increase - however it was mainly in DCS 2.0. Not so much in 1.5.

I have an I7 4820K @ 4.5 GHz.

I was getting with the 970 around 60-70 fps over downtown Vegas, with the 1080 it is just over 100 fps in the same area.

What resolution do you play the game on? I play at 2k. VR is even worse at a crappy 45fps with dips to the 20s.

Nvidia seems to have confirmed a price of 819 Euros for the Founders Edition of the GTX1080Ti. Info is from a German website:http://www.pcgameshardware.de/Geforce-GTX-1080-Ti-11G-Grafikkarte-265855/Specials/Daten-Preis-Release-1222010/

Btw. I noticed a slight performance gain in VR even with a GTX1070 over my GTX980Ti when testing it. The new Ti should give a much more noticeable boost.;)

1080p when I was gaming on the monitor.

Now with the Rift, I have gotten it to where it runs 90 fps part of the time, and dips to the 45 fps at times as well, depending on surroundings and action. I left ASW enabled. It is super smooth all throughout.
