Pressed buy on a GTX1080

YAAY my new upgrade arrives tomorrow thank goodness for Amazon prime:thumbup:

I do have a question though I hope someone may be able to help with.

I have the option of raiding the machine I built for my son with an i5 4970 and an MSI B85-G43 mobo and 8Gb RAM to replace the mobo and cpu I have in my sig.

Given that I just spent 500£ on a GPU more RAM will have to wait. Will I see a difference between my i7@3.6 and the i5@3.6 and 8gb ram over 12gb ram ?

Hope the gfx card works out for you. It should be very fast.

 

RAM is easy. Either you use it or you don't. I can still run most stuff quite happily on 8gb.

 

Take a look at benchmarks for estimated cpu performance. To be honest, it all depends what you are using it for. For DCS and quite a lot of games, GPUs are the bottleneck.

CPU wise, the difference between your i7-920 and the i5-4970 will be night and day. On the memory side of it, bumping your sons RAM to 16GB would be better, but considering the faster CPU, I would say it is still worth losing 4GB of memory, for the time being.

If that were a K processor I would say jump all over it.

Having said that though, the 4790 is certainly more recent tech than that I7 920 of yours. You would probably gain some in the performance department, how much though and whether it would be worth the hassle is hard to say. I certainly doubt you would lose anything.

And if you did go for it, I am sure you could probably add another 8 gb of ram as well down the road when you can.

 

The I5 4790 would probably match up better with that new 1080 card also.

I'd at least give the i5 solution a shot. Pretty damn sure it's a jump forward.

 

You can always fiddle in more RAM.

 

which i5 is it ? Afaik there is no i5-4970 but a 4670.

Honestly, I dont think it makes sense for any game,even if you woud outsource Physics to the 580 I could almost bet it is faster if you have it all done by the 1080.

 

Keep it as a reference card if something goes bad..or sell it for a couple bucks and have a Pizza ;)

Exactly. I was thinking of doing a dedicated Physics card with my GTX970, now that I have a 1080. But I read a few reports on the net, with mixed results on using a dedicated Physics card. So I just went with the 1080.

 

Believe me, that 1080 has MORE than enough horsepower. :thumbup:
