Brilliant!

DCS has it's own pixel density tweaking, so you can experiment there.

Would love to be there when you first climb in the cockpit!

Did you try and reinstall c++ run times like i said before ?

I had the same issue when oculus would not finish the set up but would work with the skip trick you done.

reinstalled the c++ and all good.

I talking about the c++ Redistributor not the oculus 1.3 run times.

That's pretty typical of the flakey behavior. It's a prototype, people bought because they wanted to 'experiment' with it. I sold mine for a nice profit a year ago. No, they aren't going to actively support or care about a prototype that was effectively discontinued a couple years ago. They're not 'strong arming', persay, it was never intended or expected they would continue supporting the prototypes indefinitely. They are grossly inferior to the release version. You're the one that decided to buy a second-hand, one off prototype a year or so after the commercial release. I and others tried to get rid of them for good reason.

I can't invest over £500 on the off-chance I'll be okay :(

Understandable and valid concern, but that's what returns are for. Better than being stuck with a unusable / hard to use prototype that most people aren't going to want to buy from you, though.

I was on the brink of ordering a dk2 as prices have dropped to reasonale levels. And i noticed this thread. How many people have the dk2 and are running DCS with no problems? And is it still recommended or is it advisable to stay clear and wait till the price of newer models drop?

Oculus ended official support of the DK2 in March 2016.

I would not recommend anyone getting one at this time even if very tempting.

Oculus recently dropped the price on the Rift by 100 bucks, probably won't see another price drop from them for some time... maybe better shot at catching one of the big online retailers that has overstocked running a special sale on them, like Amazon or Newegg.

Ok thanks for the advice. Is this a policy that oculus take? if I bought a newer model I guess eventually they would stop support for that product too. Shame.

By that I mean within 3-4 years

Likely not.

Keep in mind the DK2 was a Developer Kit. It's real intention was for developers to use it to begin designing software to run in the device. Oculus decided to go ahead and make them also available at that time to anyone, probably not a smart move but I think they did at that time make it known that it what it was really intended for and support would eventually go away for it.

While I have no knowledge of facts, I would presume that when CV2 comes out in 2019 ( what is forecasted at this time), it will use the same Oculus Home software as well as Open VR ( that Steam and HTC uses), as it currently does.

I myself have no concerns about it - disclaimer though - I will probably not hesitate to buy the next version when it does come out.

Ok I get you, that all makes sense. One more question. In terms of VR and DCS. Is it only Oculus that is supported or will any VR headset work?

DCS supports Oculus as well as Open VR ( Steam and HTC Vive uses). The Rift can also run Open VR titles.

However, Vive users can not " officially" run Oculus titles ( titles released by Oculus) as they are proprietary to the Oculus software. They can unofficially run them through a program called Revive - YMMV on that.

Other newer VR developers can and are writing for Open VR as well - but they are somewhat unproven so far.

IMHO - the best choice is Rift or Vive. They both have true positional tracking, and they both do it well. Do some reading and research on them both, and see which you think will be better for you for what you want to achieve in VR.

Fwiw, Oculus Rift now has a fair price advantage over the Vive, as they dropped their price here a few weeks ago if that is of any importance to you.

I can tell you, I certainly have no regrets going with the Rift. But have never tried the Vive so can't give a comparison.

I think the hardware and base functionality is the same, with the OR being more biased toward user comfort.

This is JUST ME

I also expect Oculus to eventually work in Facebook. Somehow. You'll have some random jackass 'liking' your gameplay, and commenting as you go, and don't forget the ads for Viagra and status updates!!! -_-

Vive is less likely to have that.

Naw... maybe for Facebook VR on a mobile platform ( like Samsung Gear VR).

Hey HTC is the ones introducing advertising for the Vive.

Ok, I should try DCS today and am looking forward to it.

In regards to obsolete DK2, I (now it is working) am glad I persevered with it because it it really has made me see how much fun this really is. That said though, having read reports about CV1 being a reasonable upgrade to the DK2 I don't see myself investing £500+ on it BUT I do think when CV2 arrives I will invest as the experience, although a little grainy really makes me get why this is such a great big of kit.

For the price I got DK2 (£125) I don't have any regrets and hopefully it's going to work later in DCS. All of this for me is just seeing if it would be an experience I would consider ahead of buying a GSync monitor. At the moment I'd rather go with a large 4K GSync monitor and enjoy what I can in DK2, but when CV2 arrives....I'll get it. This is great fun :)

Oh and regarding old runtimes, couldn't find a link to them but will it make a difference if Oculus DK2 is not supported anymore?

Anyway, it's great fun and worth the effort....But the first time I jumped in the air in "Lucky's Tale", blimey my stomach dropped. It was like being on a roller coaster...Took a few minutes for it to pass but I get the motion sickness reasoning. Still, not an issue and felt fine afterwards :)

Cheers, MP

Congrats on getting that thing running!

Glad you are able to experience first hand what flying/gaming in VR is all about.

It really is quite immersive.

I own a g-sync monitor and could never go back for dcs, cv1 every time for me.

I am with you there.

I have had my Rift CV1 since mid January, and had not flown any sim on my monitor since then until yesterday.

In anticipation of the upcoming VR support for another sim, I fired it up to go in and get all my controls set back up the way I wanted them, so when VR is available I am ready to go. I then loaded up my Track IR and took off and flew around for a few minutes to test my controller setup and make sure it was like I wanted it.

Man oh man, flying on the 2d monitor again was just no comparison for me. Even with the shortcomings mainly in resolution of VR, and how crisp and sharp the graphics looked on my 2d monitor, there was still no comparison for me.

I guess for me the actual size and being in that world instead of looking at it, the immersion , just far outweighs any deficiencies in current VR tech.

So that was it for me, no more non VR gaming going forward. I will be removing my TIR from the top of my monitor, and putting it away finally. It served me very well through a few iterations over the years.

Of course everyone's mileage will vary on their experience.

Same here. Track IR was great. VR really is a game changer for me. I never thought I would see the day I got rid of that device.

Well I did fire up DCS today and it really was glorious to sit in the cockpit firstly of a jet and then the Spitfire. One issue I had was my position in the Spitfire cockpit. My eye level was looking straight at the mirror so was unable to look through the gunsight. Firing the guns was more just for fun as I really could barely make out the enemy (or, I had no clue where they were unless the labels were switched on).

I do get what you are saying about Track IR in comparison to actually sitting in the environment, it is fantastic, but the resolution just isn't enough for me yet to give up the monitor. I use the DK2 as more of a wow this is cool rather than thinking I could be competitive with it..... especially spotting contacts. But for a flight around and experiencing what the future holds, damn it's good fun :)

I wonder what the comparison of what you are seeing in the DK2 is to the CV1 with the same game...

No doubt the resolution is still not where we would like it yet, just curious maybe someone that went from DK2 to CV1 could comment.

You know you can re-center your VR view right?

In DCS controls menu, scroll all the way down to UI Layer.

There you can assign VR re-center as well as VR Zoom.

This is how my journey unfolded :

First Week: Buy rift mind blowing I am in heaven dcs is in another world.

Second Week: Constant reading articles on how clarity is bad e.t.c get depressed thinking have I done the right thing.

Third Week: Retry 2d screen & track ir laugh and think am I back in the 1980s.

Fourth week: Never read another article on is vr ready again I am back in heaven.

Flying at night in the Nevada desert with moon lit sky and the eerie feeling of loneliness looking down at distant rear car lights sends a shiver down my spine whats not to like
