HD 7970 dead

Recommended Posts

Well it seams my GPU has had enough. After some driver crashes the 7970 started giving my two red stripes on my screens. Now after boot up I get nothing. Im looking to replace it with this

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814126117

The 480 has a 1310 MHz core clock where my old was 950/1000. Plus more ram. Im running 4 monitors at 1680x1050 each. Im not looking to run maxed settings.

Before getting this card I just want to make sure its better. Any advise will be good. If a 1060 is better at the same price range I'm not against it.

The RX480's are good for their price, Especially w/ Coupon Codes if available.

Really wish I knew how much better the 480 is from the 7970 but I don't. Honest guess would be 20-30% better with FreeSync and VR support.

If you can wait, the RX 570 and 580 are expect to drop very soon.

this should give an idea

interesting how the amd 500 series are being announced yet there Vega release is still overdue ( there was no amd 490 or rather "Vega" yet) :/

this basically means nVidia has had no completion in the high end. they lost quite a bit of sales. I myself wanted a higher end AMD card but ultimately i went for a nvidia GTX 1080 ( back in September to replace my AMD 280x)simply because AMD did not roll thiers out. and im still astounded after all this time they still haven,t when next generation cards cycle (irregardless if rebrand or not) is already being announced by both manufactures.

Well here is a funny thing. A good friend who owned a business built 4 computers. After a year he closed shop and had. He just handed me two GTX 670s FTW. If I can get the two cards to run in SLI this might be a better option. Ive never set up two cards before.

those cards in SLi would barely beat your 7970, that's assuming you get SLi to work and have perfect Scaling.

You'd be better off w/ a 1060, or RX480 for $200 as low as $169 w/ codes and aggressive shopping/browsing.

Thanks Skatezilla I got SLI working but I do see a loss of performance with 4 monitors. Funny. I will go with on of those cards. Im in the middle of a business startup and funds are low.

Is it me are does the smoke trails look different with the 680s

So even in SLi, you cut 33% of your Previous GPU's Frame Buffer Size.

i bought the sapphire nitro+ rx 480 8gb last month.

Its cool, i think its nice for the price ! even tho, i was expecting a little more performance on DCS. maybe because this card could do better job on dx12 or vulkan... dcs by now and 2.0 i think is dx11 only :/.

lol bloody americans... $264.99... its at u$d 426 here on argentina.

The two 680 is to get me by for now. Computer has been down for two months. Im on the fence with what im looking at. I like the Strix cards. The 480 is 1330 in boost mode around 220.00. The 1060 has 1873 boost at 260.00. Is it worth spending the extra 40.00. I think so but that on my limited knowledge.
