Adding subtitles for "Radio Transmissions"

I've ended up using Radio Transmissions quite a lot, instead of SOUND TO GROUP-- very useful, immersive, and a great way to motivate the player to operate their in-cockpit radio realistically.

One problem: there doesn't seem to be any good way to add "subtitles" for an audio Radio Transmission. The MESSAGE TO GROUP triggers will obviously trigger regardless of what frequency the player is tuned to, which defeats the purpose of transmitting audio via a Radio Transmission.

Is there any way to make text messages appear for the player only when tuned to a certain frequency?

Side-note: this is for multiplayer missions, if that's a relevant factor.

Use Advanced Waypoint Actions to perform command-》 set frequency.

Then use triggered actions to add perform command -》 transmit message.

In the transmit message window, you'll be able to add an audio file as well as subtitles. I think an audio file is mandatory, so download or create a simple static pop/mic keying sound to get your player's attention in the event you don't have recorded VOs.

The text will appear in the top left corner of the screen, just like ATC/AWACS etc.

When the desired conditions have been met, use AI TASK PUSH to trigger your radio transmission. Keep in mind this has been questionable in multiplayer as to whether players will gear the transmission; also, AI TASK PUSH is currently bugged in DCS 2.0 so you're out of luck in NTTR unless you either roll back or wait for another patch.

That sounds awesome, although your caution about use in multiplayer is worrying. Maybe I should just stick with Messages and Radio Transmissions, so far they have been very reliable in MP.

I am building a method through which players can receive dynamic ground target tasking via their radios based on mission conditions. It would have to work reliably, otherwise players would be unable to find their objectives.

Best suggestion I can make is just to give it a try :)

If you break your flights into individual groups, you can also use MESSAGE TO GROUP as a fallback if the transmissions are borked.

I built one mission where I used a radio transmission to play background audio so that I could use SOUND TO ALL for voice comms. The last time I ran it a few weeks ago, the people I was flying with said they heard the audio but I'd say you should definitely test it thoroughly if you're planning on using transmissions for mission-critical info.

Alright, will do, thanks for the help.

  • 3 weeks later...

So I got the Radio Transmissions to work with the "subtitles" fine in Single Player-- but in Multiplayer, for some reason, all the text fades out the second it appears.

I have the duration set to 20 seconds, works fine when testing in Mission Editor. But online, the text instantly goes away. The sound transmission itself works fine.

Any thoughts on this?
