How is it compared to the Huey?

Actually, I'm still undecided whether to get the Gazelle or not. I have some DCS modules (Huey, Albatros, KA-50/Black Shart2, Nevada map, FC3) but the only module I really play is the Huey. It's just "the right one" to me.

I tried the KA-50 a few times, but I simply prefer the simplicity of the Huey. Being able to do a cold start within a short period of time is just nice. Everything is so straight forward and "easy" compared to other modules. I'm sure the KA-50 might be fun as well, but it's difficult to memorize everything when you don't invest many, many hours. And since flying the Huey "feels" better to me, I can't see a reason to invest more time into the KA-50.

I was watching some videos of the Gazelle but I still think it's difficult to judge about it. So people who own Huey, Gazelle and KA-50, would you say the Gazelle is as complex as the KA-50 or somewhere in the middle between Huey and KA-50?

And what about missions/campaign? How are they compared to the Huey ones in terms of amount, quality and difficulty?

I also need to say that I'm not a "die hard" pilot. I'd rate myself more a gamer, but I'm capable to complete the Huey campaigns (UN, Bay of Hogs, Argo).

Gazelle is easy to fly and use of her systems. Great heli, a lot smaller then Huey. The Campaign is good fun too. I would recommend!

I just picked up the Gazelle at Easter, but I like it a lot. I have maybe three total hours in it and it's pretty simple like the Huey. Plus having the ability to pop up over a hill, shoot something and pop back down is pretty freaking cool.

I don't buy a lot of this flight model discussion that you read in the forum. There are some things that do feel strange to me (I'm a real world pilot) but it's nothing that would prevent me from recommending the model. What you do need to understand is that this model has stability controls (similarly to the ka50) so it will feel much different than the Huey.

I've not tried the missions so I can't comment there, but this little helo is fun to learn and throw around.

Worth it. 100%

Simple avionics, simple check list: For the missions you can make.

- Ground recon.

- Electronic recon (you have an EWR, so pairing with a Ka50 is awesome) you have the Viviane in IR mode too.

- SEAD, using you EWR to detect signals and using the HOTs missiles....

- Light CAS with Rockets and 20mm with L version.

- Air escort... you can fire AA missiles!! with M version.

- You can also deploy troops though CTLD script (or other) ,To be realistic, what I do is to deploy just a couple of guys that will be JTACs later...

- AFAC, you have a decent navigation systems, together with the TV yoiu can get the position in LAT LONG to play with aircrafts, passing them coordenates.

So... lots of things to do.

FM. I different, more "stable" more in the rails, too much bashing about it, I cant tell you if it s realistic or not. Probably needs couple of tweaks, but on the other side you have engine limits... At the beggining you blow up the engine more than once . It seems to be cumulative... so if you push hard at 100% around x secs you blow it up, but if you push the engine 15 secs at 100 % and then you fly at 90 for a long time and then you push again 100% it breaks too. So you have to be quite conservative. Mostly hovering at high altitude.

I'm surprised no one said MULTICREW !!! :D

No one asked ;)

Oh yes, I forgot to ask...what about multicrew? ;-) Just kidding. I'm only playing singleplayer, so it's not of relevance to me.

Doesn't it become "too easy" and a bit boring with all those stability controls? That's something I did not really like in the Ka-50.

Thanks for all your feedback. I think I might give it a try when they have a sale or a nice bundle. Actually I still have to complete the Argo campaign with the Huey. But after that, I might be ready for something new.

Interesting about the Mi-8. I think I simply have problems with those russian cockpits/labels. It simply looks more difficult to learn this way.

You don't need a mod for the Mi8, you can set the cockpit language in the options menu.

No fooling? I'll be darned. I saw the mod mentioned in Chuck's guide and assumed it wasn't natively available. In my defense, I just got it this weekend through the Steam sale and I've flown it twice. Thanks.

FWIW I'd say give the Gazelle a go over all when you fly it within parameters it's a great module to fly It will take a bit to get used to after the Huey but I enjoy just flying either Huey or Gazelle.

I remember my first flight it lasted about a second before I slammed it into the tarmac, the challenge was then accepted. Don't worry too much about the stability system(s) there easy to fly with after you get the hang of them and you can turn the stability systems off and fly it except you have to provide all the necessary control inputs but even so it flies great even with the stability systems off.

Please be aware the Gazelle is a much smaller helicopter then the Huey and initially that makes it feel very skittish and tends to over react to control input except power (never enough power :music_whistling:). There is a lot of discussion about the flight model particularly some points that allow the Gazelle to do seemingly impossibly things, I acknowledge there are some issues but it's still a fun module t fly and the publishers are working on it.

It would be nice to provide a Free Flight mode in Instant Acton in DCS 2.x.x. just for simple free flight. Hint Hint. ;)

Control is an illusion which usually shatters at the least expected moment.

Gazelle Mini-gun version is endorphins with rotors. See above.

Why not just use the Editor ?

I think he meant for a free flight that would allow you to try a module that you haven't purchased.

Yes. Long flights with this helo are painfully boring. Think of that first Huey mission where you fly from Tiblisi to Kutasi. If you did that in the gazelle you'd loose your mind from boredom.

But for short little jaunts where you pop up, spot some bad guys and relay or shoot them, this bird is a blast. And it's very easy to learn.

No, no I mean as in each module should come with a "Free Flight" mission as in the Huey comes with a free flight mission that you can just jump in and fly and not get shot out of the sky whilst learning or simply hang the rest of of it just go for a fly which I like to do in both the Huey and Gazelle.

That may well be each Map should have an associated free flight mission for each module.

No just fly faster and lower it doesn't get boring then. :smilewink:

Haha, good point. Well, for some "long" and boring flights, I can still use time compression....

Thanks for all the additional feedback. I was watching some more videos and reading some more reviews. Overall, it seems it's really a module worth getting. Startup procedure seems not impossible from what I've seen ;-) Learning the weapon system will probably be the harder task.
