Good Gaming Laptop?

Recommended Posts

Take a look at the highest priced ones with CPU's towards or beyond 4GHz !

Then add 32GB RAM and some beefy GPU. No less than 8GB as you will have that GPU in that thing forever !

= 3k€ or more, more likely towards 4k

For that money you can buy a real good standard size PC with all you need incl. Monitor 4k-144Hz Gsync and a Pizza on top :P

Had 2 of those when I was on the road a lot and I have to say they are vastly overrated and heavily overpriced. Repairing it is a pain as well.

@AG-51_Razor

I can recommand:

Alienware (Dell)

Lenovo

Aorus (Gigabyte)

Razor

@BitMaster

Sorry, you are writting nonsense!

Have you personally owned or serviced those devices..or just read about them ?

Have you ever personally had a a broken laptop of that series ?

Asus has no On-Site-Service, takes weeks to get it back !

My Asus G-series laptop has abroken BlueRay...they said minimum 4 weeks to repair...I SAID "IT's ONE SCREW...send it to me...they say NO!!! you have to send in !!!!

Dell was so incompetent that it took FIVE visits from THREE tech guys to kaputt-repair my SLI Gaming laptop...until on the last day the 3rd guy said....OH, there is nothing broken,m your ext. PSU is bad. By that time they had taken it apart like a dozen times, used TWO new motherboards and endless time was spent ( at my own PC workshop ! ).

After that I took Dell at their horn and sued them for braking things that werent broken !

I won and good a nice check.

No, I have sold a few of them to friends, had a few my own, too many limitations and repair is a BIG ?.

It really only pays if you travel a lot and know what you compromise.

just my 2 cents

..yeah..my MBPretina 15" wasnt cheap either, but Apple in comparisoon fixed my device twice outside of warranty, 3rd retina screen and never had an issue with delays or incompetence or such. Still, also for this laptop, for that money I could have gotten a good game rig with the biggest GPU available. I only bought it for travel and customer service on-site.

rubbish or not lies in the eye of the buyer and his longterm experience...and I guess I have a ton more than you do, sorry.

btw. that Asus had 3-Year Warranty Extension, Premium + Asus Insurance Premium.

If that is EXTRA service, what is their standard service then ?

My pals Alienware issues never got fixed to full extend, despite they even changed the complete 3.5k€ laptop the issues never totally went away.

I could go on... I just stop here

Something I never understood about laptops. We have problems with desktop gaming systems keeping them cool. We use huge air coolers and water cooling.

How in the world do you keep a gaming laptop cool? Why are we using huge components in our desktops when laptops can do it with miniature components?

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks all for your responses. I am interested in a laptop that I can take with me while out on the road for business and continue to work on missions in the ME and on occasion use it to fly with at LAN parties.

BitMaster, do you use your MacBook to fly DCS on?? I wasn't aware that DCS was compatible with the Apple OS.

I was considering an Alienware 17" from Best Buy thinking that they would be able to service it if necessary. Over the years, I have owned several Dell computers, both desktop and laptop and have been very satisfied with their service/support - probably because I very rarely had occasion to use it.

I will report back here after finally getting one and keep y'all up to date on my experience with it - whatever it is I wind up buying. joystick.gif

I ran it on my MBPr 15" Mid2012 16GB i7-2.6/3.6 machine in BOOTCAMP, which means I had a DUAL-BOOT environment. I could choose which OS I boot, either OS-X or MS.

No, DCS does not run on anything but MS.

It was ok to get started and hooked, but that was about it !

ALienware 17" is maybe a good thing, get the LONGEST warranty you can buy. Those devices are hard to repair yourself, spareparts are hard to get etc..

Fast CPU, fast GPU, 32GB, SSD..the usual cornerstones apply here as well.

Dell served me well when it came to repairs etc.. had a few problems and in the end I wasnt left alone with my problems, tho the last issue was a nightmare till it got solved.

Asus has a poor Warranty and Repair history. Nothing comparable to Dell's next day on site service, rather a 2-4 week send in policy

I don't know your budget, but for a laptop I would go with a custom configured Alienware 17 R4 from official Dell Shop:

DISPLAY QHD 120HZ + g.sync

CPU i7-7820HK

RAM 16GB DDR4 2667Mhz

GPU GTX1080 8GB DDR5X

HDD M.2 180GB (should be enough for OS + DCS, but you can add another M2 SSD later)

NETCARD Killer 1535

Limited time offer for 2574,99$ instead of 2943,99$

Any recommendations for a manufacturer of a good gaming laptop for DCS?

If you want to play DCS, why bother with a laptop? A well-chosen desktop setup will give you better performance at one third the cost.

If you absolutely insist on a laptop, just get the most expensive, lightning fast one you can find. It'll still be worse than a decent desktop and will cost 2 or 3 times more.

Kit:

B550 Aorus Elite AX V2, Ryzen 7 5800X w/ Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE, 2 x 16GB Kingston Fury DDR4 @3600MHz C16, Gigabyte RTX 3070 Windforce 8GB, EVGA SuperNova 750 G2 PSU, HP Omen 32" 2560x1440, Thrustmaster Cougar HOTAS fitted with Leo Bodnar's BU0836A controller.

If man was meant to fly, he would have been born with a lot more money!

I'm just looking for a laptop on which to continue to work in the ME while out on the road. I have a very capable gamer at home plus a server sitting next to it. This is just to keep me from getting the shakes when I am out of town for more than a couple of days at a time. joystick.gif I would also use it to fly on when I attend our annual Tail Hook LAN party but that is only an annual event.

alienware is kinda overated and overpriced. I suggest you also look at other gaming/ Higher end laptop brands like MSI or ASUS

In addition to my Desktop i also have a higher end laptop that i use for lan parties ( MSI, INtel 6770hq, 16 gb ram, Nvidia gtx 970M)and occasional overseas gaming. Albeit its a year old now.

the new pascal mobile cards are far better than prior mobile cards. Still obviously not as good as desktop counterparts but the performance gap isn't nearly as big as it was mobile vs desktop versions beforehand with prior generation of cards. its pretty impressive actually.

I was in a similar situation about 3 years ago myself, personal circumstances dictated that it was either a gaming laptop or no gaming. In the end I plumped for an MSI GT70, it's been great and still runs DCS perfectly well. I'm no longer as constrained as I wass, so when it dies I will be replacing it with a desktop, but I would absolutely buy an MSI gaming laptop again if I was in the market for one.

Having had a run in with Alienware's customer (lack of) support on an earlier (desktop) gaming rig, personally I'd steer well clear.

Dell Alienware is the best! ;)

L'importante non è stabilire se uno ha paura o meno, è saper convivere con la propria paura e non farsi condizionare dalla stessa. Ecco, il coraggio è questo, altrimenti non è più coraggio ma incoscienza.
