EVGA GTX1080 on an older system?

Recommended Posts

Need a little advice here gentlemen. I am quite aware that my system is in the outdated category, but I will not be trying a new build until next year most likely.

So my question is: Would an EVGA GTX1080 8GB be worth me purchasing now and using until i do a new build? The physical dimensions of a 1080 will fit

in my full tower case. I have PCIE 2.0 expansion slots in my Mobo. I am a little confused if I have the right power connectors to connect this GTX1080 to

my power supply. From what I am reading, it should work. Could someone confirm this??? I am attaching the Mobo, CPU, Memory, PS and Monitor specs I have

now. Any help and/or advice would be appreciated from some of you hardware Gurus out here. Any opinions on whether this purchase would help my performance

even in this old system? Again, thanks in advance for any feedback.

PS = Corsair 750w : The box says 4 x PCI-E 6 pin & 8 pin compatible

GPU = EVGA GTX770 4GB

Monitor = Asus PB278q 2560:1440

There are more expert opinions around here but it sounds like you would be fine. While the card would benefit from PCIE 3.0 it will run fine in a 2.0 slot. The improvement over the 770, especially the doubling of the VRAM should provide you with a worthwhile performance boost.

The GTX1080 is fine in your system, have a less power draw than GTX770.

You can use 2 x 8pin connector or 2x6+2

About worthing of update, if you are an AMD fan, I would wait that the new GPU AMD RX Vega come out.

I tried to do the same exercise in my system. It didn't work . Port pci express 3. Power supply enough 750 watt, but system refuse to boot. That force me to get newer mobo, mem, cpu to use my 980 newly bought gpu

^ 980 is extremely power-hungry series, though. Your PSU might have not pumped enough through 12V rail. 10xx series has lower voltage requirements, however, so maybe it would work in Blade meister's rig.

That being said, it just doesn't sound like an optimal investment in my opinion. Such a monster card will be hopelessly bottlenecked by everything else, offering some performance improvement for sure, but not nearly as much as it could. And with the rest of the PC being scheduled for upgrade "next year", by the time that happens, 1080s will be cheaper and somewhat obsolete (also remember, there's a new lineup of NV cards coming 3rd quarter of this year).

So my question is: Would an EVGA GTX1080 8GB be worth me purchasing now and using until i do a new build?

What is your resolution?

Maybe a GTX1070 is enough for you.

You have plenty of power (Corsair TX750w) even for SLI. How old is your Corsair?

You will not benefit of the power of the new video card, because of your poor CPU.

Edited OP, but I have an Asus PB278q 2560:1440

My PSU is about 7 years old but not to heavily used.

Thanks to all who have shared information here. I think I am better off using

what I have until I am ready to do a complete rebuild. Thanks again.:thumbup:
