Your thoughts on this (possible) new rig please

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to actually start playing DCS again after several years out (my current rig just wont even load the main menu), and as its 10yrs old I dont think there's much more I can do to help it.

I've been looking around the net and i'm hovering around Wired2Fire and their rigs. The one i'm interested in is the X3000 (basic specs follow below).

I'm not very knowledgable on modern hardware, so what I'd like to ask you is, is this setup worth the investment as an off the shelf item, or would you recommend some tweaking/upgrading of components? My aim here is to come away with something that I won't need to upgrade for many years, but will happily run DCS in all its glory. I also want to move into a triple screen setup.

It also needs to handle Rise of Flight, FSX:Steam and IL-2 1946 and a few FPS.

CPU : Intel Core i5 7600K Quad Core Socket 1151 (4.2GHz, 6MB Cache, Overclockable)

CPU Cooler : Cooler Master MasterLiquid 120 CPU Water Cooler

Graphics Card 1 : nVidia GeForce GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5 Graphics Card

Memory : 16GB Corsair DDR4 2666MHz C16 Dual Channel Memory Kit (2 x 8GB)

Motherboard : Asus Prime Z270-P Motherboard

System Drive : Samsung 250GB 850 Evo Series SATA III 6Gb/s Solid-State Drive

Optical Drive : DVD-RW 22x

Power Supply : FSP Non-modular 500W Power Supply (Bronze 80 Plus Certified)

Sound Card : Onboard HD 7.1 Audio

Operating System : Microsoft Windows 10 Home (64-bit)

£1,293.98 (inc vat)

On the above I have changed the case to all allow installation of a CD drive as I have far too many items on disc and dont want to spend extra on replacing them with download versions.

I can stretch up to £1600ish if the return on performance and longevity can be made.

With that in mind, what are your thoughts on the following?:

Case: 1 x Corsair Carbide Series Spec03 White LED Case

CPU:1 x Intel Core i7 7700K Quad Core Socket 1151 (4.5GHz, 8MB Cache, Hyperthreading, Overclockable)

CPU Cooler: 1 x Cooler Master MasterLiquid 120 CPU Water Cooler

CPU Thermal Paste: 1 x Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Paste

Overclocking: 1 x Wired2Fire Overclocking (non-standard cooler required)

Tuning and Optimisation: 1 x Wired2Fire Tuning (BIOS, Driver and OS Tweaks)

Graphics Card 1: 1 x nVidia GeForce GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5 Graphics Card

Memory: 1 x 16GB Corsair DDR4 3000MHz C15 Dual Channel Memory Kit (2 x 8GB)

Motherboard: 1 x Asus ROG Strix Z270F Gaming Motherboard

System Drive: 1 x Samsung 250GB 850 Evo Series SATA III 6Gb/s Solid-State Drive

Storage Drive 1: 1 x Seagate 1TB Barracuda 7200 64MB Cache SATA III Hard Disk Drive

RAID Option: 1 x No RAID

Optical Drive: 1 x DVD-RW 22x

Power Supply: 1 x FSP Hydro G 750W Gold Modular Power Supply

Cable Management: 1 x Wired2Fire Cable Management

Case Fan Upgrades: 2 x Corsair ML120 Pro Case Fan

Sound Card: 1 x Onboard HD 7.1 Audio

Keyboard: 1 x Standard USB 2.0 Keyboard

Mouse: 1 x Standard Optical Mouse

Network Adapters: 1 x Standard Wireless 802.11n (300Mbps) USB Adapter

Operating System: 1 x Microsoft Windows 10 Home (64-bit)

For that I'm looking at £1649.00 (includes vat)

Are there items in the above that when combined don't make sense (expense for no performance gain)?

Lastly, do you have have any recommendations as to where you would purchase a rig from (bear in mind i'm in the UK)?

Like I say I'm not up on all the tech stuff nowadays, but do enjoy and miss my gaming sessions - the last time I flew DCS (I was an off-line flyer) they'd just announced the Huey was going to be released!

Thank you in advance for any advice you can give on this, as at the moment I do feel rather clueless as to what direction to take here.

Cheers,

Rob

both are good machines that will give a good performance result. I would learn towards the 7700k as it is the better cpu

Novatech or Scan are good places in the uk.

Option 1 looks nice but has no storage drive, that 250GB SSD will soon fill up if you load the sims you like and several DCS modules. Add at least a 1TB HDD, like the one in option 2 perhaps.

You could always go with option 1 (plus HDD) and use the money left in your budget towards a 1440p or 4k monitor if you don't have one already, or maybe new HOTAS perhaps?

I got my rig from PC Specialist in the UK, was very happy with their service and rig still going strong after 4 years! I had to RMA the cooler after the first few months, they sent a replacement no fuss. Would recommend them.

I would go with the 7600k and spend the savings on a 1080. So option 2 (better psu and a storage drive) but with 7600k and 1080 gpu. It is very simple to build the pc yourself, I mean very very simple, just watch a you tube video or 2. If not your style then your local computer store should be able to put together the components you want for a small fee (at least thats how it works here in Australia). .

PC:

6600K @ 4.5 GHz, 12GB RAM, GTX 970, 32" 2K monitor.

Hi CPS Bomber, I agree with Rangi - I5 7600K is great and can achieve high frequency (As you aim at liquid cool system). I would prefer to spend money on GPU for running triple screen or VR instead of on I7. (I read triple screen in high FOV sucks much performance like VR)

I also agree with him on the self build option - that's what I did with my actual rig and it was my first build, and no problem all components come with step by step instructions. It's just time to spend in it. The cost delivered was 1760£ (internet shop with some reduction)

Also whatever you choose beware on not buying a founder's edition GPU..... but a custom version with good air cooling system ... So much users complain about high temp/low perf of founder's editions .... Fully loaded my gpu doesn't come over 65°C so frequency is always max. (with custom fan settings)

The FE Edition is a good choice or the "only" choice if you want to watercool it with aftermarket GPU blocks, or buy an Asus Poseidon which is Air & Watercooled, so you can run either- or--or both.

When you watercool that thing, count 2-3x 120/140mm fansize rad per Processor to not end up with high spinning fans. A case that can adopt 2 loops is nice but 1 BIG loop and enough radiator surface(s) is also great ( my approach to it ). You will basically have your GPU below 50°C all the time and your CPU should be 50-55°C @5G in DCS. Those cooling components last long and may be reused on your next rig, what fits can be reused.

the 7700k is without a doubt the fastest in IPC but a Ryzen is also worth to consider if you play just not only DCS or do other things with your PC.

Also, Intel will release new CPU's soon if you can wait... also AMD will, the 1976X is a real nice beast, 12cores/24threads and 3.6/4.1 stock clocks with 44 Lanes would be my personal pick for the next rig.

edit* almost forgot: Dont buy prebuild if you can do it yourself, half of the stuff on your list is "ok" but from the wrong vendor. There is better stuff out there for the same money !! and there is no need to buy a Standard Mouse etc... and a Home edition of Win10-64, you can do better yourself or we guide you, but there are many things I would never even sell to anyone I know, as a fact and your GPU does not say which brand, expect the cheapest they can buy to resell it to you !

If using 1080p monitor then GTX1060 should be fine. I would grab a i5-7600K instead of the older i5-6600k as overclocks higher. I would however strongly consider a Ryzen 5 and B350 motherboard based system if you want to save some cash which you could then perhaps look at upgrading the 1060 for a 1070 card.

120mm wc is worse than a good aircooler tbh. Eigher 2x120 or 2x140 or good air like DH15

ObiWan, the Superchannel YAMA PSU are unknown (no home page), find something else.

+1 dont hand your precious parts over to a questionable PSU !!!

Seasonic, Corsair...look for the WARRANTY they grand you. 10 years is standard for good ones.

Get at least a GOLD or better PLATINUM grade PSU, it pays back over time if your electricity is not for free and the noise is less too.

If your case layout is good, you can get along fine with air cooling with an i5, unless you're planning to engage in some extreme overclocking. You might spend the money saved on watercooling on a 1TB HDD for extra storage. Also, you can get 7600k for the same price as a 6600k.

You could get a Ryzen 5, but you're getting poorer single thread performance, and less storage throughput, as the SRT tech in the Intel Zx70 chipset uses SSD drives for data caching. If it's an all purpose rig that he'll use for CPU intensive things like video encoding, the Ryzen might be a better bet, but I'd stick with the i5 for gaming. Plus, he would only save on the mobo since the i5 7600k is currently cheaper than the R5 1600x.

edit: on second thought, SRT isn't really relevant to his planned rig, he's going for a single SSD drive. On that note though, there are some nice midrange mobo's that have M.2 NVMe sockets for PCIe SSD cards. Better performance, less space for the SSD.
