Windows question

Recommended Posts

I'm planning to build a new PC with a 250G SSD dedicated to Windows and DCS only. I have a couple of questions though:

1) I have Windows 7 64 now, and I'm happy with it. I've heard that it doesn't go very well with SSD, though? Do I really need to do some complex workarounds to make it work?

2) I can also buy Win 10, that's supposed to work well with SSD-s, but it's an extra cost, and I'm afraid my peripherals (MS FFB2, Saitek rudder, Track IR4) wouldn't work with it.

Can someone speaking from experience give me some advice?

Thanks!

better to have two SSD

one for windows10 ( 120go ) ... one for games ( 250go )... better perfos ...

I used to have win 7 64bit and now very recently updated (for free) to windows 10.

I did not notice any real improvement, but also have not noticed any big drawbacks either. Might have just as well stayed in win 7, but on the other hand someday MS will end win 7 support, so might as well update.

On win 7, I used to follow this guide to setup windows for optimum performance, but I have understood that tweaking like that is not really required for good SSD performance since win 7 SP1. Anyhow, I find the guide informative and generally including plenty of good system optimization and maintenance tips. http://www.overclock.net/t/1156654/seans-windows-7-install-optimization-guide-for-ssds-hdds

Technically, two SSDs is a better solution. I did update from one to two separate ones a while back on a different system, but honestly did not really see a noticeable performance increase (apart from the obvious benefit of having physically more fast disk space) between one or two SSDs. If your founds do not allow two at the moment, you can always update later if you feel so. It is definitely an advantage to have windows on a physically separate SSD and games on an another one just from the system maintenance point of view.

...or sorry, wanted to add the link on how to still update win 7 to win 10 for free if you have a licensed version of win 7.

Totally not true windows 7 runs fine on an SSD (just make sure your bios sata setting is AHCI)

No need to buy 10 (unless you have money burning a hole in your pocket)

I and some of my friends have W7x64 on SSD. No any problem.

Where did you hear that Win 7 did not work well with SSD's? My OS has been on an SSD since Win 7, and I have been exclusively SSD (except for a spinner for miscellaneous data) for many years. My sim box contains 3 of them.

One SSD is good, but a separate drive for the OS is always going to provide better performance.

I see, thanks for the feedback! Any disadvantages of switching to Win 10?

Aside from the complaints that some have about Win10 update policies, and phoning home to MS, the most significant disadvantage, for some, is that older applications/hardware may not be supported.

TrackIR4 works just fine under W10, no issues.

I so wish that were true, but even with the settings to dont report telemetary ..... windows 10 still does ,

some network security guys tested it out by monitoring network traffic generated from a windows 10 that had the "do not phone home" stuff set to disabled ...... was still talking away to MS

Or do you mean configuring your network router to block traffic to MS and associated MS IP's ?

Where and how do I set it to AHCI? Is it done before or after the installation of Win 7? Do I really need to disconnect other HDD-s to make sure Windows only installs on the SSD?

Bios -> Storage usually is where AHCI lives

It is best to disconnect other drives and just have the SSD installed when installing windows , once windows is finished installing , power off PC and reconnect other drives and power it back on again

Made sure you note which drive you are booting from with just SSD connected, just incase the BIOS changes it to one of the other drives when you plug then back in

You HAVE TO do it BEFORE you install the OS. It wont boot the OS if you change it after installation.
