New User - new computer

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I'm new to DCS and I want to build a new computer to play.

I 've search in the forum but I'm still in doubt if this specs below are good enough:

CPU: i5 7600K

CPU Cooler: CoolerMaster Hyper 212X

Motherboard: Asus Prime Z270M-Plus BR

Memory: Corsair Vegeance 16GB (2 x 8) 3000Mhz DDR4

Video Card: EVGA GFORCE GTX 1050 Ti 4GB OC

HD: Seagate 1TB 64MB Sata III

SSD: 120GB Kingston

Cabin: Aerocool VS-92 White

Power source: Corsair VS600 80 Plus

* I dont have enough money to buy an GTX 1080.

* Is it a good idea go to Rizen and AMD Video cards?

Thanks in advance !

Otavio.

Yes.

I have the 6600k i5 overclocked to 4.5gh

Stable!

My advice is to do some more saving to get a better gfx card.

One thing I learnt over the years building rigs is if you buy a low or mid range card you will need to upgrade it a lot sooner...so you dont really save anything in the end.

+1 for a better GPU like 1080

--> go Ryzen and take the saved money for a better GPU, Ryzen5-1600X is a sure bet at 3.6-4GHz.

I would not buy that small GPU as you have to rebuy soon when you understand why I am afraid to say. Rather skip the 3.5"HDD as well for now and use that money too for gpu, you can always buy a HDD and add it anytime later.

16GB is fine in 2 modules, you can always add another 16 later on.

For what that i5 costs AMD gives you 2+ cores + SMT, 4 vs. 12 to be precise !

Agreed with Demon, the GTX 1060 6GB or RX 580 8GB are plenty for 1080p. Hell, my RX 480 did 1440p on fairly high settings in both NTTR and DCS 1.5 solidly. I only swapped to a GTX 1080 TI due to grabbing an Oculus Rift a week ago. In any case, I recommend an R5 1600X over the I5-7600k. The CPU is the same price while being nearly 3x as fast due 50% more cores and 3x as many CPU threads. That won't help in DCS since it's single threaded, but it matters basically everywhere else. The B350 motherboards are also a little cheaper than the Z270's, so you can put an extra $50 towards your graphics card. Other than that, rest looks fine. Though the 1600x may require a different cooler or an adapter, not sure if the one you are looking at includes an AM4 adapter yet.

Edit: My 1600x cooler was $25 from newegg and included an AM4 mount. I can recommend it, works great and is dead silent with a 4GHz all core overclock. Linky: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835856005

Yep, go for the Ryzen and save some cash for a better GPU.

You need at least the GTX 1060 for this system, to get the most out of it I would think and have it balanced? The 1060 should be OK to play at 1080P, maybe 1440P if you lower some settings down.

First, to ask the guy for a better video card, you have to know his resolution.

A GTX 1080 or a GTX 1070 for a 1920x1080 resolution is... mmmm!.. well... nonsense.

For all those saying that a 1060 6GB is enough for 1080p, well.... it depends on what level of performance and settings you find acceptable and satisfying. I recently upgraded to a 1080 Ti from a 1060. At 1080p resolution with the 1060, my fps would drop into the high 30's at times in DCS 2.0 flying over Las Vegas in the A-10C and I experienced stutters as well. This was with max settings except terrain shadows were flat, cockpit shadows low and civilian traffic low. With the 1080 Ti, the lowest FPS I see are now in the low 90's but stay well above 100 for the majority of the time. Sitting on the runway at Nellis in the A-10C and facing north, FPS would hover just above 60 with the 1060 but are now well above 100 with the 1080 Ti in the same situation. The 1080 Ti allows me to lock my FPS to 60 (monitor refresh rate 60Hz) and use vsync without ever having to worry about my FPS dropping below that. This has given me the smoothest performance while being able to enjoy near max settings.

With the 1060 6GB, settings would have to be turned down considerably to get the same smooth performance, even at 1080p resolution. So, I would hardly consider the 1070, 1080 and 1080 Ti overkill or nonsence for 1080p at this time. Maybe further optimization of DCS will change that.

The OP was looking at the 1050ti:( and perhaps wont spend the money on the 1070? I think he is looking for a good budget PC and get the best bang for his buck. If the OP can, I would differently not go under the 1070 for DCS and the 1070 with the Ryzen5-1600X would be much better, if he can stretch the budget that far.

With all I read here, I noticed that the more important is to increase my budget to get a better GPU.

Regarding the i5 x Ryzen, I choose the i5, as here in Brazil the price are equal for both and I prefer Intel for DCS and also X-Plane 11.

I increase my SSD to 240GB and exclude the HDD for now.

This is the specs that I will get now:

Intel Core I5-7600K

Cooler Thermaltake Riing Silent 12 120mm

Asus PRIME Z270M-PLUS/BR LGA 1151

Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2x8) 3000MHz DDR4, CMU16GX4M2C3000C15

Corsair VS600 80Plus White PFC 600W, CP-9020119-LA

SSD Plus SanDisk 240G, SDSSDA-240G-G26

Thermaltake Versa N25 Black

EVGA Geforce GTX 1080 8GB GDDR5X 256Bit, 08G-P4-5180-KR

Thanks for all of your comments and suggestions.

As a general rule of thumb for gaming, the most expensive component in your rig should be the graphics card.

I would hold off now and wait for the 8th gen Core series, just a couple weeks more. Looks like 5 and 7 go 6-core to counter Ryzen

I don't know how much you want to spend. I bought this system and it runs DCS on high settings very well. No stutters on any map. It didn't come at 4.2, but 4.5. One mouse click and it's 4.7 and still runs smooth.

As other said wait to see the new Intel CPU's, if the leaks are correct they will be competitive on price and perform at least as good as the 7th series in gaming and single threaded load, then the Ryzen 1600X someone suggested would not be much convenient any more.

For the graphics card I would suggest a GTX 1070, at retail AMD's graphics card cost more than a similar performing NVIDIA which in turn consume less and overclock better.
