Advanced Skinning Question!

I used to think that when skinning, you were limited with DIFFs, SPECs and NMps for the basic areas of the wings, tail, nose and fuselage. But recently, a skin called Miss America Too (by Shadoh) has flipped me on my head!

So, this skin has files for the prop, pilot, helmet and the patches!

This is the bottom of the description.lua for Miss America Too:

"pilot_P51_body". Yet when I look in the P-51D's textures (Bazar/World/textures/P-51D.zip) that is not there. The image is the same, but the title is different.

"pilot_p51" :huh:

So, now that you may know roughly what I'm getting at, where is "pilot_P51_body" coming from? It's working, because I've used this skin in DCS, and it is different from the default. But I don't get HOW it's working. Sense "pilot_P51_body" and "pilot_p51" obviously don't match for titles, how is it working? :helpsmilie:

Im not totally sure, but i think "pilot_P51_body" is the material name used by DCS to connect to the texture file , in this case "Pilot_P51_01_MA" , im probably right off the mark.

So, Shadoh was able to use that. Any idea where I get the titles for other images? Say, the tires? Same name as on the P-51D.zip, or something different?

All the textures are in one of the models file, I can't recall which one. Maybe you have to rename something to .zip then extract. Not sure.

Whatever is in your skin folder and is mentioned in your description.lua will be used. If something is not in the description.lua the file in the .zip will be used. That's how I understood it.

Ive looked around the files, i cant find anything, its probably buried in a dll file or something somewhere, i also looked at the model viewer but that only shows the texture names.

H'lo, been awhile since I have been on, so, not sure what has changed, but in this link I describe what I knew of what the values do in the description file: https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=163268

As far as what can be changed, basically any graphic that is in the aircraft's ZIP file, the trick is learning what the proper link code is. That is stored in the *.edm file and is not easily deciphered. That is how I found the links for the prop (with a hex editor). Others I found out through other custom skins.

As far as the tires, pretty sure they are in the main body graphic.

Hey, ho! Sorry for misspelling your name, Shahdoh. Last time I saw you was maybe a little under 2 years ago, on what used to be Virtual Aerobatics. About those tire textures, yes, they APPEAR to be in the main body graphic, and while I have changed them before, it didn't reflect in-game. The tires only changed when I edited the two files in the P-51D.zip. https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/2664501

Thanks to GeorgeLKMT and Shadoh for the help.
