Upgrade my PC for DCS 2.5

Recommended Posts

There are already benchmarks out for the 8700k.

The way I read them says: buy a Ryzen 1600X or 1600 and don't look back.

looking at your hardware...why do you want to upgrade at all ?? There is not much to win either side you turn imho ! I would ride that 4790k for a bit longer and buy a Ryzen-2 with 7nm and 4.5-5G and even more cores :smilewink:

Buy a new 16 GB RAM kit (do not mix with your older kit) and a new GFX.

I recommend a Vega 56 but check its power requirements first. otherwise get a 1070.

Giving the price I would not recommend Vega, AMD fooled us on prices giving out a one time discounted MSRP as the official one and once retailer sold out the first discounted wave the price consequently increased by 100 bucks.

I would instead suggest too to double the ram and update the graphics card.

I don't know how's the price in France but NVIDIA will be probably more convenient, something like a GTX 1060 6GB or a GTX 1070.

cromhunt and shonist,

Thank you for your interest and help in my upgrade as we are getting close to DCS 2.5

I have now narrowed my choice: it will be a 1070 or a 1080, the 1080 price being very close to the 1070.

I also plan sometimes in the future to get a TN 2560x1440 (2K) 144Hz 1ms monitor.

One fellow already answered me but I'm still worrying about my Power: Antec HCG 620 Watts 80+ Bronze. Will it be enough to power the graphic card and all the rest of my PC? I would appreciate more confirmations.

Thanks for the hint about the size of the card. My case is a big one, a Fractal Define R2. So I think it should do.

Don't worry, you have enough power even for a 1080 Ti

@Pilotasso: thanks, I was not aware of power simulators. I checked and it is indeed useful but I also like users opinions (vs manufacturer)

@cromhunt: I answered to your PM

@Phantom453: thanks, DCS runs on my SSD

@Stefem: thanks, I prefer Nvidia. I have to decide now on 1060 ,1070 or 1080. I feel that 1080 might be a bit too much for my processor. Thanks also for your feedback on the power.

Thanks guys, however it looks like my power is enough for at least 1060 and 1070. I do not want to change the power because I'm not very technical.

Many thanks Pilotasso!

I was not aware so I will put on hold a bit the purchase of the graphic card.

If it is true, I guess Nvidia must be aiming to release the card before Christmas.

  • 5 months later...

February 22, 2018.

My question: Should I spend the money to upgrade my current PC computer’s RAM, Graphics Card, PSU, CPU, etc. or just buy a pre-built with a NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 1080 TI graphics card and all the support hardware already installed—to play DCS World 2.5 for five years? Any reputable pre-built PC companies that you can recommend would be helpful. I’m not a tech dude. I realize no graphics card or pc system will play all the time at 60 FPS – a benchmark for reasonable play.

I am a new DCS World player. I just want to play DCS World 2.5 and beyond on multiplayer (more video RAM required?) online servers and campaigns offline on a single desktop monitor (1080p) with TIR5, joystick with twist rudder, throttle and a full-size Desktop Tower (for ‘future proofing’) and play specifically for DCS World – no other games. (have all these items)

Currently play on DCS stable version 1.5.8.12823.414. Waiting for DCS 2.5 final release. Many Servers already gone over to the 2.5 Open Beta. Very few left on 1.5.

[Note: Latest released DCS_updater is 2.6.24.37. If your updater got corrupt because of a broken antivirus or firewall software, you may download it here: DCS_updater_64bit.zip 2.7 MB ]

Not interested in 3D, Virtual Reality, or 4K graphics, etc.

Recommended system requirements: OS 64-bit Windows 7/8/10; DirectX11; CPU: Core i5+ at 3+ GHz or AMD FX / Ryzen; RAM: 16 GB; Free hard disk space: 120 GB on Solid State Drive (SSD); Discrete video card DirectX11: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070/ AMD Radeon RX VEGA 56 with 8GB VRAMor better; Joystick; requires internet activation.

Source: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/downloads/world/beta/

My computer (purchased already built):

Lenovo Y900 Desktop tower – full size (2 years old – March 2016)

Processors: 6th Generation Intel Core i7-6700k (4.00GHz 2133MHz 8MB)

Operating system: Windows 10 Home 64

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 4GB

Drives:

SSD: 256GB (78.4GB used--160GB free)

SATA Hybrid Drive: 2TB 7200RPM

RAM: 16GB DDR4 2133MHz (note: is there a new GDDR6 RAM coming out?)

Mother Board? – Device Name 2F6B2C20-1D9F-458A-A664-C0CA0E535D88

Power Supply Unit: It says “610W MAX” (625W total). Note: an online comment mentioned that “a PSU is operating at its optimum when only 50% of the power is used….buy twice what you need...if you are using 400W then buy a 800W PSU...”

Thinking (not sure) that I should do the following upgrades to my PC computer to play DCS 2.5 for five more years on it: (in anticipation of future DCS 2.5 updates)

1. RAM--Add an additional 16GB of exactly the same DDR4 2133 MHz ($250-$300)

2. SSD--Add a SSD 500GB ($150-$200 - not sure where or if it will fit…)

3. Upgrade graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 TI Founders Edition

(New: $1,000 to $1,500….if they were available…). Remember: April release time for the new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 2080 series graphics cards.

4. Upgrade PSU to 1000W – $250 - depends on graphics card (‘future proofing’ ?)

or:

5. Don’t spend the money to upgrade. Purchase a pre-built gaming pc with the 1080TI card, etc. already installed in it.

Appreciated any comments. Especially on the new GTX 2080 (and 2080TI?) series graphics cards coming out this Spring. Money spent on current technology may be out of date. Depends on where ‘DCS 2.5 and Beyond’ will be going in the future.

Your current computer is adequate for DCS 2.5 at 1080p with high settings. Don’t feel pressured to upgrade.

If you must upgrade

  • 32 GB of RAM will not give you additional performance. 16 GB will be enough. The recent reports of excessive memory usage are the result of a bug.
  • 160 GB will be enough space for now. Another SSD is not needed.
  • GTX 1080 Ti would give you the biggest performance improvement and the ability to play at the highest settings with higher resolutions. However, current graphics card prices are very high thanks to crypto.
  • A new PSU is not necessary as your power consumption won’t significantly increase with a graphics card upgrade. However, you might want to upgrade for peace of mind. Note that 1000W is rather excessive. A quality 750W unit would be more than enough.

Right now, inflated graphics card prices make pre-built computers rather attractive. If you want to do that, go ahead.

If you want to use such a computer for many years, it may be beneficial to wait until the release of new Nvidia GPUs.

DCS often depends on single-thread CPU performance. Therefore, look for computers with ‘K’ CPUs and ‘Z’ chipset motherboards. These will allow you to maximize CPU performance through overclocking.

‘GDDR6’ will be for graphics cards. DDR4 will not be replaced soon.

At 1080p, DCS really isn't all that demanding. It may be good to consider a monitor upgrade so that the expensive hardware that you plan to buy can achieve its full potential.

Mitthrawnuruodo,

Clear, concise comments--thanks very much for the great response to my questions and concerns! Really appreciate it. Want to download the DCS 2.5 stable when it comes out and play on Multiplayer Servers at the standard 1920 X 1080p resolution level for now as I learn more about computer gaming, graphics, etc. The Monitor advice makes great sense too!

No problem. I'm sure that you'll enjoy 2.5 when you try it.

Be sure to carefully check the graphics settings after installing. Some settings are rather counterintuitive because they hurt performance for little to no visual benefit. A nice guide can be found at https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=202092.

I'm quite sure you'll get adequate performance. With some tweaking, I was able to get a good result on similar hardware.

DCS 2.5 Gaming PC Monitor question: Looking at this monitor for upgrade-

ASUS ROG SWIFT PG279Q 27" 2560x1440 IPS 165Hz 4ms G-SYNC Eye Care Gaming Monitor with DP and HDMI ports.

[Note: this monitor is set to 144Hz. 165Hz is achieved by a few customization options] ($750.00 U.S. Dollars). 'Eye Care Gaming'?? Really? Sounds like a marketing item...

-Current Monitor is a 24 inch Asus 60Hz. Purpose of monitor and PC is only to fly DCS 2.5 in the future....I am committed! (My mom had me tested. :-)

-My current computer below (purchased already built):

Lenovo Y900 Desktop tower – full size (2 years old – March 2016)

Processors: 6th Generation Intel Core i7-6700k (4.00GHz 2133MHz 8MB)

Power Supply Unit: It says “610W MAX” (625W total).

Not interested in curved monitors, 3D, VR, overclocking, etc. Interested in only the the standard 1920 X 1080 or 1440 with G-Sync (Nvidia). Single monitor only. Intend to do a full upgrade/buy new computer in the Fall. Was thinking that selecting the right monitor now to help with several visual acuity issues (yes, I wear glasses too... :-) for both my current and future computer gaming on DCS 2.5 (I am still on DCS 1.5 right now until DCS 2.5 is stable-released).

I'm thinking a new 144Hz monitor and a graphics card with 8Mb of video might be a good optional upgrade for my current PC - if it helps the play of DCS 2.5.

Sure have appreciated all the help from you guys. You are good people! :-)

Gsync is real nice ! Either with your 980GTX ( I had that one before on that screen ) or with a 1080Ti if you buy one.

If you buy into QHWD, I would say that with 2.5 a 980GTX becomes slow and the 1080Ti can deliver well over 60fps, sustained, full everything. Done that, lowest was 65fps with 2.5beta3

with really everything in and downtown vegas. That strong a 1080Ti is ( Overclocked btw, maybe 5-10fps lower without any oc on cpu and gpu ).

144Hz and WQHD cry for a 1080Ti, that's when I made the jump, to stay way above 60fps with 2.5 in the future.

But hey, the 2080 is about to be launched. Wait !

Also AMD is around the corner with new CPU's. I would not buy anything now unless pressed.

Yeah, G-Sync is great if you're willing to pay a few hundred dollars more for the monitor.

With G-Sync enabled on a 144 Hz monitor, frame rate fluctuations aren't very noticeable all the way down to about 45 fps. You don't get the jarring stutter typical of fixed-rate displays whenever the frame rate drops below the monitor's refresh rate.

Not quite true, technically actually wrong.

Gsync works inbetween your VERTICAL refresh rate, for example my vertical range is between 50-144Hz. below 50 and over 144 no Gsync.

You know, I have a GSYNC monitor. But I'll be damned if I can tell the difference. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough.

As far as I understand, G-SYNC doesn't insert duplicate refreshes until well below 50, according to my experience and this source https://www.blurbusters.com/gsync/gsync101-input-lag-tests-and-settings/2/.

I went from 1080P 60Hz to 1440P, 144 Hz, 1ms GSYNC, this was a big night and day difference and I could not go back to using a monitor without GSYNC.

I guess that is a big jump from a standard monitor, plus having the 1ms helps;)

Yes, the good refresh rate and response time are very helpful even without G-SYNC.

Whatever you do, just don't settle for a standard 60 Hz panel. Everyone constantly talks about graphics cards, but they're really quite useless without a proper display.
